Afghanistan Imposes $3545 Container Tax on Departing US and Aussie Forces

Operation Slipper

This story hasn’t gotten nearly enough airtime though the entire thing is a demonstration of how impotent Obama’s soft power is.

The withdrawal/drawdown from Afghanistan has become much more expensive on the American side because of a bizarre criminal attempt by the Afghan authorities to cash in one last time on the Yankees with a customs tax.

With Afghan authorities insisting the US owes millions of dollars in customs fines and trucks carrying hardware being blocked at border crossings, the Americans have started flying out most equipment by air at great cost.

“The cost is five to seven times more” by aircraft than over land through neighboring Pakistan, said a defence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Afghan government is insisting that US forces pay $1000 for each shipping container leaving the country that lacks what it calls a valid customs form.

And authorities now claim the Americans owe $70 million in fines, even though the US contends that Kabul’s stance contradicts previous agreements, said US officials, confirming a report that first appeared in the Washington Post.

In some cases, Afghan officials were blocking commercial trucks from delivering food and fuel to US forces due to the customs dispute, the inspector general said.

You know that Karzai Inc. wouldn’t be pulling this nonsense on an administration that would shake the big stick at them. But Obama’s smart power means that the US is just abandoning or trashing a lot of equipment and flying the rest out at a much higher expense.

Australia has it even harder.

The regime of President Hamid Karzai has imposed a $3545 per container exit tax on every container leaving the country by road, including hundreds of loads of military equipment being removed by coalition forces.

Exemptions can be applied, but Australia has not been granted a waiver and without the correct paperwork each container will also be hit with a $1000 fine.

The Australian Defence Force’s first convoy of 55 armoured accommodation containers is waiting for clearance at the Pakistan border and as soon as it crosses the frontier Australia will be liable for a $200,000 exit tax.

Australia has given Afghanistan about $1 billion in civilian aid funds during the past five years and will provide about $200 million a year indefinitely.

In addition the military will “gift” millions of dollars worth of equipment, including hundreds of armoured accommodation containers, for use when coalition forces depart during the next 18 months.

Again, this kind of thing is a show of weakness. If Australia made that aid contingent on waiving customs fees, it wouldn’t be putting up with this. Unfortunately this government is in almost as messy a state as ours. Messier arguably, considering the insanity and the battles.

of course the US has absolute total complete inability to do anything at all in the least about this, except… ??? oh yeah, give them more money and arms?

Another brilliant outcome of the Neo-Conservative Master Plan of “nation-building” with military force and lots of money. Bravo!

    • objectivefactsmatter

Yeah, this is exactly what the “neo-cons” planned.

0’Bama is now a neo-con in your book. But at least he’s a sincere born again Christian neo-con…I hope.

“Blame the neo-cons” is just another variation on blame Bush. In 2013. August 2013. Brilliant.

      • Texas Patriot

There is no question that Obama is guilty of the same Neo-Leftist, Neo-Communist, and Neo-Conservative philosophy of sacrificing the lives of American soldiers and the treasure of the American people on geopolitical goals and ambitions (more like fantasies and wishful thinking) that have absolutely no chance of success. Face it, the days of the U.S. being a “global policeman” are over. It’s time to rebuild America from the ground up, starting in the U.S.A. Whatever need there is for us to intervene in hotspots such as Iran and N. Korea that pose a legitimate threat to global (vs. local) peace and stability can be handled with precision surgical strikes of advanced weaponry with whatever munitions are needed to get the job done. So if you’re still salivating over the idea of U. S. soldiers getting blown apart or burned alive in Humvees by 15 year old kids with IEDs and cell phones, get over it. We’ve had enough of that kind of “fun”. From here on out, if we need to fight, our enemies will get real war. Not the “phony war” of “phony conservatives” who couldn’t fight their way out of a paper bag.

        • objectivefactsmatter

I recall you saying just about the opposite thing not to long ago about the “born again Christian” 0’Bama, that was allegedly preparing to deal with NK and Iran old school style.

I missed your “pivot” transition period. At least you’re waking up.

          • Texas Patriot

There has been no “pivot” in my position on Barack Obama, and my assessment of him remains substantially the same. In that regard, I fully expect Obama and Chuck Hagel to surgically remove the Iranian nuclear weapons complex if it appears that Iran begins moving toward the assembly of a nuclear weapon. And I also still expect them to do it without jeopardizing the life of a single American soldier. These have been my long-held views of the matter.

What has changed in my views recently is the extent of my awareness of the infiltration of Neo-Communist and Neo-Leftist ideology into the Neo-Conservative mindset. I’ve always known that your views are far to the Left of my own. But until the recent manic and hysterical trashing of Diana West’s new book, “American Betrayal” by Messrs. Radosh and Horowitz, I was unable to see how thoroughly Leftist and Totalitarian ideologies had permeated the American Neo-Conservative mindset. That is the only change in my views that I am aware of.

But I agree with you that the conclusions of Ms. West’s book are far-reaching and profound and provide a clear picture of just how the Leftist and Totalitarian aspects of the Neo-Conservative mindset have all but destroyed Authentically American Conservative thinking as exemplified by the most authentic of all American Conservatives, Barry Goldwater.

My hope is that someday you, too, will wake up to the extent to which Leftist and Totalitarian ideologies have come to dominate the Neo-Conservative mindset, but I’m not holding my breath on that. As David Horowitz says with such unassailable personal knowledge and experience, “Inside every liberal is a totalitarian screaming to get out.”

          • ziggy zoggy

Obama and Hagel are going to destroy Iran’s nuclear weapons program? The one that has been working on nukes for years now? Hilarious. Neocons are lefties? And you’re still whining about West’s crappy book? I’m starting to think you have mental health issues. Seriously.

          • Texas Patriot

Ziggy Zoggy: “I’m starting to think you have mental health issues. Seriously.”

Thanks, Ziggy. My best regards to you, as well. But based upon those remarks, I’m all but certain that you are a victim of Neo-Communist, Neo-Leftist, and Neo-Conservative propaganda. If you want to have a clue what Authentic American Conservative thinking looks like, buy a copy of Barry Goldwater’s “The Conscience of a Conservative”. Leftists have always used the Bolshevik and Stalinist tactics of portraying their political opponents as mentally ill. They wanted people to think Barry Goldwater was crazy as well. But the only thing crazy about him was that he didn’t buy into the hate-filled lies and character assassination that always characterize the tactics of Communists, Leftists, Bolsheviks, Stalinists and all other enemies of Authentic American Conservatism. Have a nice day.

            Boom! Facts.

          • Drakken

Boom! Wishful thinking, Obummer won’t do squat about Iran.

          • Drakken

You really don’t understand warfare do you? If you think you can just win with airpower alone, you really don’t know wtf your talking about. Sure we can bomb them back to the stone age if we want to, but every stinking libtard will be crying war crime at every turn.

          • Texas Patriot

I understand modern technology. And with the advanced targeting and payload capabilities we have today, it is entirely feasible to surgically remove the deeply buried Iranian nuclear weapons complexes without the loss of a single American life; and furthermore, with the precision targeting of deeply buried underground facilities, there is a likelihood that the loss of Iranian lives will be limited as well. What I also understand is that needlessly sacrificing American “blood and treasure” is precisely what our enemies (at home and abroad) want us to do; and if you think that playing directly into the hands of our enemies is a good strategy for making war, perhaps you don’t know as much about war as you think you do.

          • Drakken

If you want the job done you have to take the fight to the enemy, and if you have to kill 1 or a million to get it done, so be it. Our idiotic rules of engagement make it impossible for us to win because we are afraid to hurt people and break things, it goes against thousands of years of the lessons of warfare. You don’t win wars by precision bombs and hearts and minds lunacy. You win by grinding them up and begging at your feet to surrender. Unfortunately events are going to catch up with the brutal reality sooner rather than later.

          • Texas Patriot

There’s a better way, Drakken. We should all hope we never reach that worst case scenario. Eliminating Iran’s nuclear weapons complex by surgical strike should suffice for the time being.

          • Drakken

The problem with that little scenario is there are 1,000’s of hajis in the west to cause mass chaos, panic and disorder if that comes, and I’ll bet you a cool 10,000 grand that Comrade Obummer won’t bomb Iran nukes and blows it? Worse case is going to come to us whether we like it or not.

          • Texas Patriot

I don’t see that happening in the near term, at least not in non-Muslim dominated countries. Most parts of the U.S. have not yet surrendered to Muslim domination, and Muslims are careful not to cause too much trouble where they do not have numerical advantages.

          • Drakken

The savages who are great in number in Europe have worn out their welcome, and the natives are getting extremely restless. It is a matter of sooner rather than later that a Balkans on steroids begins over there, and make no mistake it will travel here in short order. Comrade Obummer won’t do anything to Iran period, ole Val Jarret will make sure of that.

        • Tiffany Madison

You are 100% correct, my fellow Texan.
