Thank you for your utter discriminatory post Ziggy Zoggy. From your response I have come to the conclusion that the problem of gun violence is because of blacks and immigrants? Well done. And why is it a problem? Did you ever think how the blacks and immigrants are getting guns? Your completely missing the point. I don't care if blacks are 14 times more likely than whites to commit violent crime. I was arguing that the easy access to guns is responsible for the huge crime rates. It seems you are completely missing the point and just going off on a rant about black people being responsible for violent crime. It is about gun control not about specific ethnic groups being responsible for the crimes that are committed.

You think that there are no black people in Australia? You are forgetting that this country was colonised by Great Britain and was originally inhabited by Aborginals who are black. In the modern era, they constitute some of the lowest socio-economic groups of people in Australia society. But they don't have access to guns because of our strict gun laws. And thus they are not responsible for the majority of gun crime in Australia.

First of all, regardless of whether the shootings in Western Sydney were from people who are of background of immigrants, that has nothing to do with the main point I am trying to pursue. Eight people have been killed in Western Sydney this year. Eight. The author is trying to describe that gun control doesn't work in Australia because of 'immigrant crime'. I'm sorry eight people dead? There was a long weekend this year that 12 people were killed and 62 wounded in gun violence in Chicago. Say what want about appropriate comparisons to population but 12 dead in one weekend is absurd, wherever in the world it is. And you and this author are trying to discredit our successful gun laws by claiming we have a problem with gun violence in Western Sydney. I will repeat again. Eight dead this year.

Secondly, a Gang member in the USA can get a hold of a gun if they don't have a criminal record. Therefore, anyone involved in organised crime can legally get a hold of guns (provided they fit the criteria and don't have a criminal record). This isn't possible in Australia with our gun laws. So whether gun crime is carried out by organised crime or not, it doesn't matter. The bottom line is guns are easily accessible. Even if you have a criminal record it doesn't matter. The point I was trying to get across was that the guns that Australia's underworld are getting their hands on is from the black market. Not guns for sale in Australia, but guns smuggled illegaly (which will happen regardless of any gun laws). But in America, gangs are getting a hold of guns through legal means even if they have criminal records. Just read this article http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2013/08/a-convicted-murderers-case-for-gun-control/278824/.

Thirdly, you need to touch up on your economic knowledge. South Africa is not a developed country. A population of over 50 million but a GDP of only $600 billion. A quarter of South Africa's population live on less than $2 a day. Developed? Yeah okay. South Africa is a newly industrialised country and some ways off a developed country. So your point is irrelevant. As for Great Britain, I am unsure of specific crime rates but the homicide rate (which is the point of argument - gun violence) is definitely higher in the United States. In 2012, there were 551 recorded homicides in Great Britain and Wales. In the United States, there were around 14,000 homicides. What does Great Britain and Australia have in common. Strict gun laws.

Again you missed my point on gun laws. The teenagers from the Chris Lane case obtained the guns from someone who obtained the guns legally. At this point I'm not sure whether the teenagers obtained the guns from their parents, friends or bought them illegally but somewhere the gun was bought. Whether directly or indirectly, the guns were obtained legally somehow. In Adam Lanza's case, he took the gun from his mothers collection, which was bought legally. I was trying to explain that your gun laws have allowed people to legally purchase guns, and a minority of mentally unstable people (gun holder's children, friends and people who rob houses etc.) are able to have access to these guns in many cases. It is great that 2.5 million cases every year in America were firearms have been used by responsible citizens to deter violent crime. But who are they deterring? By any chance was it people that have been able to obtain guns through the countries current laws? Was it people possess guns because of the society that guns laws have created? And tell me this, is George Zimmerman considered part of that 2.5 million people? And why Marissa Alexander went to jail for firing warning shots when 2.5 million people were also trying to deter violent crime?

Blacks may be responsible for the majority of violent crime in America. But why? Why have they got such easy access to guns? Why has anyone got such easy access to guns? They don't in Australia and our crime rate is extraordinarily lower (I don't care about the size of our population, our crime rates per 100,000 are significantly lower). Again, I am not trying to antagonise the USA. This isn't a competition. I am trying to argue that gun crime in Australia is extremely low and that is a direct impact from our strict gun laws. I am extremely irate about Chris Lane's senseless death. But it isn't an isolated incident. Innocent people are being killed in the USA every day. The gun laws need to be changed.

Finally, you said that 2010 gun deaths in Australia: 236 in a population of 25 million, virtually none of whom are Black. I didn't realise that having a large percentage of black people in a respective country meant that the homicide rate was higher. Perhaps you would like to look at the homicide rate of Russia, which is higher than the USA, and is almost entirely white.

Vozella, your comment is utter nonsense. I can't believe how stupid and uninformed its author can be. The shootings in Western Sydney are related to its immigrant population, which is tiny. Virtually all the shooting murders in the American cities you listed were committed by Blacks. Most of those were gang shootings and gangs are members of organized crime. There are 33 million Blacks in America and although not all of them are criminals they are 14 times (a very lowball figure) more likely to shoot people than whites, despite the fact that Whites outnumber them 7 to 1. How many Blacks live in Australia? 5 or 6?

The USA doesn't have the highest crime rate in the developed world. Not even close. South Africa does by far, including the murder rate. Britain has a MUCH higher crime rate than America and that includes violent crime. 5 times greater last time I checked. Australia has a population of only 25 million, and almost none of them fit the racial demographic that is responsible for the most shootings worldwide. Be careful who you call a moron.

The three "teenagers" (2 of them Black and one racially mixed) obtained the murder weapon illegally - just like all criminals do. Minors are not allowed to own pistols in Oklahoma. What you don't realize is that there are up to 2.5 million cases REPORTED every year in America were firearms have been used by responsible citizens to deter violent crime - usually without firing a shot. This figure utterly dwarfs the murder and shooting rates.

Take one guess who is doing the vast majority of killing in Brownsville, Compton and the entire city of Chicago. The reason we risk being shot is because those cities have strict gun control laws. Walk through any city in Arizona or Vermont - both which have right to carry laws - and you will be far safer than in Western Sydney.

I'll leave you with these statistics.

Actual 2010 gun deaths in USA: 8,7775 in a population of 310 million, two thirds of which were suicides. (South Africa had 31,000 - that it reported.)

This article is utter nonsense. I can't believe how stupid and uninformed this author can be. The shootings in Western Sydney are related to organised crime, where the guns have been obtained by illegal means. Yet only 8 people have been killed this year, as opposed to upwards of 20 people being killed on some weekends alone in a city like Chicago. Sydney a city of 4.5 million, had 47 murders in 2012, with a rate of 1.0 homicide to every 100,000 people. By contrast, a city like St Louis (which a metro area population of 2.5 million - almost half that of Sydney) had 115 murders. New Orleans has almost the exact same population as my hometown, Canberra (the capital of Australia - about 350,000). So far this year 1 person has been murdered. In New Orleans, there have been 76 murders in the first half of 2013.

If you honestly think gun control has not impacted on Australia's crime and homicide rates, you are a complete moron. Australia has some of the lowest crime out of the developed world. The USA has the highest.

This isn't a competition. The reason I am irate is that an innocent Australian student was gunned down senselessly. This is sickening. Something has to be done about gun laws. I can't comprehend how you don't realise that a restriction on firearms means that people like these three parasite teenagers that killed Christopher Lane, George Zimmerman, Adam Lanza and numerous other psychopaths that shouldn't be allowed to be anywhere near guns, wouldn't be able to obtain them. And hence thousands of innocent people would still be alive.

Criticize Australia and its opinion on gun control laws all you want. Come here and I'll take you to Western Sydney, where the majority of people don't have guns. Can you take me to Brownsville, Compton or Southside Chicago? I'm guessing not because you risk being shot.

I'll leave with this statistic.

Alexander, firearms are used to prevent violent crime in America up to two and a half million times each year - usually without a shot being fired. That figure utterly dwarfs the figure for shooting deaths, two thirds of which are suicides.

Most Australians don't need guns because you have a population of only twenty five million and a relatively low crime rate. Your demographics are likewise very different. Blacks in America are responsible for the majority of violent crime and Australia lacks that demographic in large numbers. From what I can see, most of your violent crime is committed by immigrants, and they make up a tiny proportion of your society. I'm guessing that Western Sydney's suburbs have a larger than average immigrant population, yes?

More than 1,200,000 violent crimes were prosecuted in America in 2010. We definitely need guns in the hands of responsible citizens. Right to carry states like Arizona and (I think) Vermont have very low shooting rates because the criminals are scared of getting shot. The cities and areas here with the strictest gun control laws tend to be the most violent because only criminals and cops have guns, and the cops usually show up after your dead to draw a chalk line around your corpse.

All street gangs are trash. Prison gangs too. Gang membership should carry an automatic death sentence or deportation. Wasting money on violent criminals is idiotic.
You are mistaken.
Freedom does not mean guns for all,no one in the US made that claim.
There is a difference between legal and illegal gun possession.
In many areas of the US law abiding citizens do need guns to protect themselves and their families from the huge amount of criminals living near them.
Legal gun owners are not the ones committing the crimes
You don't seem to understand the crime rates in the US.

Wait a minute. I didn't feel safe walking down the streets of the Los Angeles CBD at 1 o'clock in the afternoon.

Yet I feel safe riding home from University at 10:30 at night in Brisbane.

You people are the issue: the fact that one can go and BUY a gun at Walmart for $1500. I don't deny that Australia does have a little bit of firearm issues. But the average citizen here doesn't NEED one. The only people that do are the bikies and the coppers. And the bikies are the nutjobs in this country.

And one last point. Sydney's western suburbs are the most dangerous part of the country, bar none.

Americans on both sides of the fence appear to have a false idea of what "gun control" here in Australia means. After the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, the government banned semi-automatic rifles and pump action shotguns. Personally, I think that waas an overreaction, because most of the hundreds of thousands handed in were from law-abiding citizens, who probably would never have used them against humans. The important point to remember, however, is that those same people then went out and bought more conventional guns. As for the gangs, I suspect that they are doing their killing with quite ordinary guns.
The big difference between our two countries is that there are 88 guns per 100 Americans, and 11 per 100 Australians. The reason has little to do with "gun control", but more about the fact that far fewer Australians go hunting, and even fewer feel the need to have a gun for self-defence. It is unusual for a city slicker to want a gun, but most of us could get one legally if we wanted to.
And, of course, this has implications for public policy. With so many guns around in the US, probably the best way to cut gun crime is to allow citizens to carry concealed weapons. This would be unnecessary, and probably counter-productive in Australia.
