Belgium Sentences Man to 4 Months in Jail for Burning Koran

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

Belgium was liberated from Nazi occupation from September 1944 to February 1945. Ostend was liberated in September 1944. Unfortunately it appears to be under Fascist occupation once again.

In Belgium a man was convicted for ‘racist hate speech’ because he publicly tore up a Koran, before the eyes of a group of Muslims. The case illustrates the need to protect free speech against those seeking to criminalise ‘Islamophobia’.

On 8 June 2012 a man, identified as Arne S., participated in a demonstration organised by a radical right-wing political party, Vlaams Belang (‘Flemish Interest’), opposing the construction of a mosque in the Belgian coastal city of Ostend. In the aftermath of the demonstration S. tore up a Koran in the presence of a small group of Muslims, with whom he had exchanged words. The public prosecutor indicted S. for incitement to hatred, discrimination and violence on the basis of race and ethnic origin.

The defendant’s attorney called for an acquittal, arguing that no infraction on the anti-racism legislation had occurred. The criminal court in Bruges convicted the man, however, on 11 March 2013. Due in part to the unfavourable criminal history of the defendant, the sentence was relatively severe, consisting of an effective prison sentence of four months and a fine of 600 euros. The court held that the facts were serious and testified to “a blatant lack of tolerance and a highly questionable attitude”.

In Belgium, a “highly questionable attitude” leads to a four month prison sentence. The question is how long until it leads to one here.

    Disgraceful.

I think its time we had a "burn the koran day". They can't lock us all up, can they??

"I think its time we had a "burn the koran day". They can't lock us all up, can they??"

I'd say doing it once every 24 hours is a good plan. Record it on HD video and see if anyone will let you publish it. I wonder if youtube would…these days. We can't defy the Sunni-Commie dear leader. He won the election (technically) so he has a mandate to what he wants. At least that's his explanation.

The government has no right to burn published works. Individuals that own any published works have every right to burn them as they please.

It's funny how leftists get that backwards. But not that funny.

Anyone who goes along with this deserves nothing but contempt. Anyone who went along with (helped facilitate) this process deserves jail. This political prisoner is a freedom fighter.

In reality we should start to march in protest every time this happens.

Hilarious how people in Europe and soon-to-be in America can be sent to jail for burning a single koran, when islamic extremists all over the world are untouchable when they burn American flags and bibles. am i missing something???

.If he had burned or torn up a Bible, the Orwellian "authorities" would have ignored it. Many European countries are governed by cowardly fools, hack bureaucrats and "diversity at all cost " loons….it is terrible to behold.

  • Bob

That's not the question. When's it going to happen here? What… Why… Why even ask that? That makes no sense!

Many European countries do not tolerate hate speech, & they haven't for decades.

Because one of their citizens breaks their laws one time doesn't bring it any closer to our border.

BTW: many of these same counties don't allow women to wear hijab. So, all at once they're Islamaphobic AND dont tolerate political incorrectness. They do what works for them. Just like we do.

should he be arrested and thrown in jail for burning a Bible?

There can be no such ting as so-called Islamaphobia becuase "phobia" refers to an unrealistic fear and fear of violence is natural, not unrealistic. & No, Christians are NOT just as prone to violence as Muslims.
Islamaphobia was a created concept used to name-call and silence those who would speak the truth about the real cultural differences between Western way of life and Islam. To deny that there are meaningful differences is to have an agenda that supports the conquest goals of Islam.
If that's your "bag" then shout Allahu Akbar and get it over with. Why post here?

"According to the statements of the accused, the Muslims threw the sacred [sic] book at his head, which provoked his action."
As Mr. Greenfield wrote, "No one is actually intimidated by these acts. There is no racism. Theocracy is being implemented without legal recourse." (Front Page 7 Mar 2013)

Europe is gone, and America is not far behind. IF this was not the case, how would the following be possible, whether it was burning the Koran (whereas no such punishment accrues to the Bible, but no matter…) or otherwise – http://adinakutnicki.com/2012/07/28/alert-radical

A Koran with the pages cut out and concealing a bomb was dealt with in Iraq in March.

Note there was no manufactured riot, as familiar in Europe and USA.

The press notice of this case in Belgium only says that he tore the pages of the book thrown at his head, not that he burnt them.
The muslims responsible for the assault, throwing the item at him, were not prosecuted.
Two-tier justice: how Europe is being betrayed by its compromised leaders.

  • Fred

I think we would all be a little freer if we burned a Koran every GD day.

A koran a day keeps Islam away, and that is a good thing.

But it's legal to burn God's Word.

"If they valued the koran they wouldn't have thrown it at him."

They value its use as it's always been intended; as a weapon. They used it properly according to its creator.
