D.C. Congresswoman Claims City with 8th Highest Murder Rate is Safest in America

Washington D.C. would only be the safest city in America if the rest of the country consisted of Detroit, Stockton, Kansas City, Newark and New Orleans.
Otherwise… it’s not particularly safe. But don’t tell that to Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton who only has a passing familiarity with reality even on the best of days.
Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D., D.C.) claimed Washington D.C. is the safest city in the U.S. Monday in a Navy Yard shooting press conference:
ELEANOR HOLMES NORTON: I want to say to residents who are coming home today that the response of the police, the taking down of the shooter so quickly, convinces me yet again that this is the safest city in the United States. Not safe from attack, but safe.
Apparently D.C. is safe in some symbolic way. Not safe from murder, robbery or rape. But safe in the way that the economy has recovered, but hasn’t actually created jobs.
In 2012, Washington D.C. ranked eighth in murders per capita in cities populated with 500,000 or more residents, according to data submitted by cities and released by the FBI earlier this month.
And there’s robberies too .
Violent crime so far this year in the District has spiked sharply — a 40 percent increase that includes twice as many robberies at gunpoint than at this time last year.
Across the city, all police districts are reporting increases in violent crime, and all but one have had double-digit percentage increases, according to internal Metropolitan Police Department documents.
Overall, though, incidents of violent crime — homicides, sexual assaults, robberies and assaults with deadly weapons — are rising at an alarming pace.
The biggest increase was in the 1st District, which includes Capitol Hill, where violent crime jumped by 69 percent, with 110 incidents reported compared with 65 at this point last year.
And rapes too. ..
Violent crime in the District is down, echoing national trends, but rapes in the city increased by almost 25 percent in 2010, according to federal statistics released Monday.
According to the FBI’s annual report “Crime in the United States, ” there were 187 rapes in the District in 2010, compared with 150 in 2009, a 25 percent increase.
Safe as houses.
