Desmond Tutu: Godfather of Hell

Desmond Tutu has been busy lately. Two weeks ago he wrote an editorial calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. A week later he joined an international anti-tobacco campaign. Last month he condemned American drones for killing Muslim terrorists. Last summer he denounced a military-themed NBC Reality Show.

A grinning and giggling social butterfly, Tutu is always going somewhere and expressing his opinion on something. One minute he’s in Myanmar and the next minute he’s weighing in on Bradley Manning. Wait a little longer and there will be a Tutu column, video or letter on climate change, the death penalty or the price of tea in China.

Tutu retired two years ago, but he hasn’t slowed down. Instead he has become one of those celebrities who desperately cling to fame long after they should have let go by showing up everywhere and opining on everything.

Not only is Tutu an expert on international taxation and television, but he is obscenely eager to tell every country what they should be doing. You can’t go very long without a Tutu column lambasting Sri Lanka or Israel or some other part of the world. Tutu will occasionally even take the time to whack Zimbabwe, but generally has less to say about his own country.

Tutu’s favorite international targets may have their faults, but few of them are really as bad as his own native South Africa.  Two years ago, Tutu denounced South Africa’s Zuma government for being worse than the Apartheid government, but he has less to say about the general state of affairs in the hell’s own acre that is the new South Africa.

Last week, while Tutu was joining his campaign against tobacco, a 7-year-old girl who had been sent to deliver a set of keys by her grandmother was raped to death in South Africa. Her story ended on a dirty street, but it is not an unusual story in a country where 1 in 3 girls will be sexually assaulted before their 18th birthday, where 13.6% of the African population is HIV positive and raping children is believed by many to be a cure for AIDS.

Tutu is not unaware of these facts. Occasionally he will take a break from traveling to some distant part of the world to bemoan a domestic horror in his own backyard, but he never stays committed to fighting for change. The man whom so many think of as a fighter for justice in his own South Africa has shown that he would rather play the international stage; traveling around the world to receive honors and praise.

Even Tutu’s greatest explosion of outrage at President Jacob Zuma came not over his rape trial or his corruption, both of which Tutu only listlessly condemned, but the South African government’s denial of a visa to the Dalai Lama.

It wasn’t so much the raped women and the murdered children, the dead mine workers or the murdered white farmers, who troubled the retired archbishop, as being humiliated on the international stage of humanitarians by his own government.

Desmond Tutu has never been a humble man. “We marched in Cape Town, and the Berlin Wall fell down two months later,” he once declared. And all the international attention has only made him more arrogant. He has also never been a particularly nice man. The other Tutu, the one who doesn’t show up with the Dalai Lama to speak at length about the virtues of forgiveness, is the one who compared the “Jewish Lobby” to Hitler and Stalin and sneered that “Jews seem to think that they have cornered the market on suffering.”

While Tutu only has so much time for the suffering 7-year-old girls dying in South African streets, he has made the country of the people he seems to think have cornered the market on suffering into his special project.

While Desmond Tutu calls for a boycott of Israel, he collaborates with Hamas leaders on projects such as the Global March to Jerusalem. Tutu refused to share a stage with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair over the Iraq War, but urged Israel to negotiate with Hamas. Tutu described Israel’s blockade of weapons shipments to Hamas as an “abomination” while calling for an international boycott of Israel.

“I never tire of speaking about the very deep distress in my visits to the Holy Land; they remind me so much of what happened to us black people in South Africa,” Tutu wrote in an open letter calling on Johannesburg University to end its association with Israel’s liberal Ben-Gurion University. And indeed Tutu never seems to tire of speaking about Jewish depredations. It’s the abuses still taking place among black people in South Africa that Tutu has much less time for.

Desmond Tutu has acknowledged the dreadful situation in South Africa today, but at a much lower pitch than when he denounces Israel. And it’s easy to see why. Tutu’s international stature rests on the myth that he healed South Africa. But South Africa has not been healed. South Africa is deeply wounded and bleeding to death. As an international star on the Elders celebrity circuit, Tutu is a hit. As a healer, he is an abysmal failure.

Attacking Israel is easier for Tutu than healing his own country. The Archbishop Emeritus long ago lost his faith in South Africa and has been running around the world to escape the ANC’s ugly legacy.  Attacking Israel has become a perverse substitute for fighting for the soul of his own people. Beating up on the Jewish State allows Tutu to aspire to a moral stature, even if it is a stature drawn from the ugly heart of his own notorious anti-Jewish bigotry.

“The Jews thought they had a monopoly on God,” Tutu once said. These days Tutu thinks that he has a monopoly on god, laughing it up with the Dalai Lama while denouncing Christianity for creating the KKK. To millions of liberals around the world, Tutu has become a miniature deity. A giggling deliverer of empty profundities about responsibility who runs away from the horrors he spawned in South Africa.

    Tutu is emblematic of the likes of Mandela and Jimmy-the peanut farmer-Carter. All of them are "elder statesmen", given all kinds of homage, yet they all have one thing in common – they back the most dangerous horses, yet pretend to be "human rights" activists. Not exactly.
    And for all the reasons mentioned in this article, one would think that S Africa would be a place where he would really want to make some human rights inroads. Again, not exactly – http://adinakutnicki.com/2012/08/19/comrades-in-a

    The road to hell has always been paved with "good" intentions.

      I've known Desmond Tutu was an idiot since the early 80s. (and I was just a kid then!)

      • http://twitter.com/paulvmarks @paulvmarks

        One can oppose apartheid and still be an idiot. Anyone who takes the trouble to listen to Tutu doing his "giggle, say-something-stupid-and-then-just-flat-wrong, giggle-giggle" thing, knows he is a idiot. Telling THE TRUTH does not make someone a "racist" – and the truth is that Tutu is a deeply stupid man.

        • Henk Askes, PhD

          Dear Paul
          I wholeheartedly agree with you. The title archbishop does not fit this man. He is a typical example of an anti-christian figure. To giggle after every stupid remark he makes, is proof of being a moron himself. I heard this man speak in the Netherlands where he was treated with all the necessary regards of being a godly man. But what a disgrace he was and many of his rem,arks were not even true but sheer lies. And even in the Netherlands the jounalists are blind as long as the speaker concerned, utters remarks aimed against Israel, stirring up apartheid situations of 15 years ago and not referring to the pathetic way South Africa is functioning and being governed now.

          Anybody with a normal set of brains will see this man as a hoax and nothing else. What about the more than 3000 white farmers who were murdered the past number of years in South Africa.

          If God does not help this country there is no future for the people and that includes everybody..

          I get my pension from this useless economy thast is still functioning thanks to the Whites.Every month I get a different figure on my bank account..

          • Whateverman

            White domination in SA is OVER. It will NEVER come back. Cry for eternity.

          • http://twitter.com/paulvmarks @paulvmarks

            apartheid (like the "Colour Bar" before it) was the invention of leftists (although nonMarxist ones ) – white trade union thugs and other such. See W.H. Hutt's "The Economics Of The Colour Bar" . It was intended to protect "white workers" against evil "capitalists" employing blacks – "taking their jobs",

          • Mary Sue

            Unfortunately, the alternative is worse. Sad but true. If the blacks weren't being low information voters and being communist, it would be a different story.

          • Drakken

            What's the matter abed, don't like a functioning country?

          • http://twitter.com/paulvmarks @paulvmarks

            Dear Dr Askes.

            There are many great black thinkers (Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Star Parker, …..) but South Afirca is not ruled by such people. It is POLITICS – the worst of any group of people always seem to get to the top in politics (and they promise the mob, the mob of any colour, everthing – and lead them to folly upon blood soaked folly).Personally I do not even like Pericles – which puts me at odds with two and half thousand years of praise for this politician.

        • kasandra

          You really are a vile creature, aren't you.

        • stern

          Dear Whateverman,

          That is called a "non sequiter". In other words, your conclusion does not follow the logic that has gone before. Now, clearly, you are not logical, so this probably doesn't matter to you. But you should know that you have chosen the wrong place to give vent to your hatred and stupidity. You cannot get away with it here.

        • http://twitter.com/paulvmarks @paulvmarks

          Are you against National Socialism? In the United State it was an extreme form of "Progressivism" (including the statist ecomics and the racist eugenics) see "Liberal Fascism". Marxists called it "the socialism of fools" – but only later did they start pretending it was not "really" socialism.

        • Ar'nun

          Inappropriate Laughter is often a sign of Dementia. I'm not sure if he has always been like that is I have never spent much time studying the man, but dementia could also explain his stance on Israel.

        • Mary Sue

          You think Elie Wiesel is an idiot? WOW, just wow. And you say you're not a racist?

      • zalukas

        Him and Mandela were on Soviet pay. Were do you think name Soweto came from?
        When all the white Africans purged from the continent, the cities they built will be claimed by the Nature and leave Black Africans jobless and desperate.

        • Guest

          Do you know what the name Soweto stands for? SOuthWEstTOwnship. I lived in the country for 16 years, half under and half after apartheid, but I never ever heard that the two were on Moscow's payroll. Mandela was in prison for 27 years. The other one was free and fighting. Yes there were many who got their education in the SU and were some who graduated at Oxford.

      • Drakken

        He didn't fight apatheid, that POS devils priest encouraged a white purge, so take your faux outrage and get bent with it.

      • Mary Sue

        I don't think he's an idiot for fighting apartheid. A stopped clock is right twice a day.

        He's an idiot for other, horrible things.

    • Guest

      Nelson Mandela does not belong in the same sentence with the other two mentioned.

  • BS77

    what an appalling and ridiculous man….

  • DeShawn

    By the way, Israel was the only "cotunry" that supported South Africa under apartheid. Now Israel has apartheid against the Palestinians on their own land. That's not a coincidence. Evil sides with evil, and jews are the most racist people on the planet. For all you shabbas goys out their, just read their talMUD and see what they have to say about Jesus. I hope the Arabs finally drive you vipers out and take bake their land.

    • Alvaro

      Arabs already have their own land – Arabia.

    • Mary Sue

      You anti-semites can't make up your mind whether Israel and Jews support communism or not, can you?

      I know exactly what the Talmud says about Jesus. And you know what? The opinions of a few messugah rabbis from hundreds of years ago has no bearing on the present. That's like saying the Westboro Baptist Church speaks for all christianity.

      • Trevor

        "The opinions of a few messugah rabbis from hundreds of years ago has no bearing on the present."

        Oh come on, Mary Sue. These teachings are being taught in the present in the more extremist Yeshivas by these messugah [sic] rabbis.

        And these are the very people you're supporting, Mary Sue.

        I'm disappointed in you. I thought you were one of ones on this site who knew better.

    • gee59

      Liar – Israel did not support South African government. Now the French and British governments most certainly did support them.

      As for 'apartheid against the Palestinians on their own land' – first off no Arab can even say the word because there is no 'P' in Arabic. Second they don't own the land. The land belongs to the Jews – it's called international law. Arabs are from ARABIA Jews from JUDEA. The thieving fascist Arabs are the illegal colonists that already have stolen 99.93% of the land – we are keeping our tiny 0.07%

    "the people who killed Jesus" – I did not know you hated ITALIANS (Romans) so much,

    As for Israel – it gave vast amounts of support to black African countries in the 1960s, but then the Arabs bought the African rulers (with oil money), so Israeli policy noted the betrayal accordingly. Jews in South Africa were the foremost FOES of apartheid.

    A rumor do the rounds that the Noble Prize have been withdrawn from Tutu, Mandela and de Klerk. This prize were given to people which they thought to be PEACE MAKERS. Afterwards it was discovered that this was not the case.

    Desmond Tutu, I wonder how much he's being paid?

    You think not? Read "The Soviet Mafia" by Arkady Vaksberg.
    The Soviets, or their successor Russia or CIS, is largely a criminal organization run like the Mafia where things get done by bribery, intimidation and murder.
    The motive for their criminal activity? If the Russian Mafia makes money by stealing fruit from Georgia, how much more do you think they'd be motivated to destroy South Africa in order to get control of their mineral wealth and their strategic geographical location?

    Desmond Tutu – communist stooge – definition – "lackey, person used for another's purpose".
    Useful Idiot: "In political jargon, a useful idiot is a pejorative term used to describe people perceived as propagandists for a cause whose goals they do not understand, who are used cynically by the leaders of the cause…"

    The takedown and destruction of Rhodesia was a Communist operation directed and funded by the Soviets / Russians.
    Read the "Selous Scouts : top secret war" by Daly and Stiff.
    Rhodesia was just the first victim on the road to their ultimate target, South Africa.
    And Desmond Tutu is one of their most useful TOOLS.

      Sure. But we're not discussing how diverse our global population of criminals is. When people talk about "Israeli crimes" in every case I can recall, they are lying. And furthermore, they want to imply that Israel is unjust as a nation and this is just insanity.

  • gee59

    Wow now the truth comes out – we killed your "God". My oh my, not much of a "God" if mere Jews could kill him. Oh wait the Jews didn't do anything – the Romans killed him.

    Oh well racist morons never let a fact get in the way of their rants

    • Trevor

      "Oh wait the Jews didn't do anything – the Romans killed him."

      Actually, according to the New Testament, Acts Ch7 V 51 – 53

      "51 “You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.”

      The New Testament also claims, Just after the Jews shouted for the terrorist Barabbas to be set free

      "24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”

      25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”

      Matthew 25

      • Mary Sue

        The Jews did not pull the trigger, so to speak. The Romans had to because the Romans forbade the Jews from implementing Capital Punishment on their own.

        BTW "His blood be upon us and our children" does not mean what you think it means.

        • objectivefactsmatter

          "BTW "His blood be upon us and our children" does not mean what you think it means."

          It means they said something very foolish.

      • objectivefactsmatter

        "24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”

        25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”

        Wow, I never heard that used by a leftist before to attack the Jews (if only that was true). That's so profound (ditto). So God wants Christians to be collectivists. He wants Christians to go around attacking "the Jews" because of what a few of them said and did in conspiring against Christ just recently. Some of those "Christ killers" might be dead so we need to find their children. We're collectivists.

        And we can make up any lies about Jews that we feel like because that scripture clearly removes any obligation for any other measure of morality and justice, never mind telling the truth.

        In fact that scripture proves the Koran is correct about the Jews. Just ask Mo or one of his disciples like Trev-boy.

        • Trevor

          Once again we find you typing a lot and saying nothing.

          "So God wants Christians to be collectivists. He wants Christians to go around attacking "the Jews" because of what a few of them said and did in conspiring against Christ just recently. Some of those "Christ killers" might be dead so we need to find their children. We're collectivists."

          You really are an odious individual. I never claimed all Jews, past, present, or future, killed Jesus or are responsible for killing Jesus. Nor did i say, suggest, or even hint in the slightest that todays Jewish children are responsible or should be punished.

          You can't argue with the Bible so you make up these fantasies, fantasies that only an imbecile would make up. You really are one sick puppy.

          Your mask continues to slip and the idiot behind it is slowly, but surely, being revealed.

          Keep up the good work!

          • objectivefactsmatter

            "I never claimed all Jews, past, present, or future, killed Jesus or are responsible for killing Jesus."

            Not explicitly, but collectivists often imply or infer using your arguments. In this context it's easy to see how your arguments are intended to attack Jews. Your a leftist, and leftists are collectivists.

            Since you're also one of the most blatant a-holes, I'll leave it up to you to review our previous conversations abut the UN and Israel for that evidence.

            "You can't argue with the Bible so you make up these fantasies, fantasies that only an imbecile would make up."

            I'm arguing with a delusional globalist, not the Bible.

    Jesus and his entire family and the apostles all were Jewish. Uneducated statements like yours are truly not acceptable. It seems that you are antisemitic,therefore anti Jesus? Christianity evolved from Jesus's' teachings and Judaism. The Vatican even clarified who killed Jews, please read on this. The long history of antisemitism is totally based on misunderstanding and jealousy of the extraordinary accomplishment of Jews in every field ( music, science , medicine ,, Salk, Einstein , Semmelweis, Cole Porter , Irving Berlin the composer of God bless America , etc. etc) . Now will you deny any vaccinations for Polio, or you will never sing God bless America again ? Antisemitism stems from stupidity and misinformation. There is hope for you, if you start reading and researching unbiased literature, and not be brainwashed by stupidity and hatred, but by love and respect for all creations in this world.

            "Please, educate me on the passages given…"

            You need to know a lot about the context to understand what is being told, but without context the first thing to know is that it's a statement for the historical record. Therefore trivial unnamed characters don't speak for God or anyone other than themselves.

            The second thing you need to know is that the Jews were "chosen" to be an example and witnesses for those examples. It doesn't mean their worse in any case. They are proxy for all humankind. They are simply members of the cast included in the narratives. Some members have more important roles of course but those exceptions are stated explicitly.

            The third thing is that in this specific context, the Jews present are being chastised for resting on their collective laurels as "people of the prophets" and forgetting that the same collective people also killed the prophets. So that means that they're back to square one which is no better or worse than any other population collectively. It's about their relationship with the messiah being the only thing that matters. It is not a condemnation of anyone other than those who actively reject the messiah as individuals.

            Now you will say I am odious and my words are wasted on you. I agree with the latter statement but you're not the only one reading them.

          • Trevor

            Blah blah blah and more blah. Is that all you got?

            I've already posted the passage from Acts. Either use Acts to explain your rant or shush laddie.

    Tutu seeks fame for the fame sake. Fame is addictive, no matter what lies or stupidity you utter. It will be repeated by the press. It is up to the reader to read it or not. Tutu has no authority, he is by now a sad figure, and unfortunately he does not know when to stop. He is a sad example of a has been , or a never even been.
    His utterances are meaningless, and he uses the cloak of his church to get respected. But what really is under the cloak is an empty shell.

      anti-Semitism (n.)
      also antisemitism, 1881, from German Antisemitismus, first used by Wilhelm Marr (1819-1904) German radical, nationalist and race-agitator, who founded the Antisemiten-Liga in 1879; see anti- + Semite.

      Not etymologically restricted to anti-Jewish theories, actions, or policies, but almost always used in this sense. Those who object to the inaccuracy of the term might try Hermann Adler's Judaeophobia (1882). Anti-Semitic (also antisemitic) and anti-Semite (also antisemite) also are from 1881, like anti-Semitism they appear first in English in an article in the "Athenaeum" of Sept. 31, in reference to German literature.

      • Femia Cools

        I mean that all we get through media is manipulated by bias, advertisers or by powers we do not know. It is advisible not to take any info or opinion for granted. We must inform ourselves as good as we can, to really hear and judge what is being told to us. It is not about liars or not liars, it is about what is favorable to show. And mostly that means not telling the whole story.

        Btw, I do not think that any famous person that is seen as a great example for peace and manhood will be worried by us knowing more than what we get to hear.

          I think we agree. The only way to know the story well enough to judge is to assemble the narrative yourself with enough diligence. And some times it is about distinguishing lies from facts, but often it is subjective. You find all of the above, depending on where you look. There are apparently more liars than you realize though.

          "Btw, I do not think that any famous person that is seen as a great example for peace and manhood will be worried by us knowing more than what we get to hear."

    Archbishop Tutu may have been a great leader in the fight against apartheid,but he's making himself look extremely foolish whenever he makes a stupid comment. He may have spoken out against Zuma's government and rightfully so,but he's now made himself look like an idiot in light of his most recent statements. It's a shame. He goes from great leader to an utter fool in the short space of a few decades. That's sad.

        No it means that they invent claims without any proof and then demand that we defend ourselves from their inventions.

        It's called a blood libel. No other newspaper in the world has ever made that claim nor has any proof of their claims been offered so no it is not even close.

    Desmond Tutu is to the Club of the Nations what that old hag, Helen Thomas, was to the White House Press Corps: a pathetic excuse of a human being, only famous for once being at the right place at the right time, desperately clinging to anything they could hold-on to, too pompous and self-inflated to know when to quit and when to shut-up.

    Here we have a top racist lambasting racism, a top money-grabber talking about economy, a top inciter talking about restraint, a top antisemite talking about hatred of blacks, a top idiot talking about intelligence. Unfortunately, the world is a big arena, with enough room for the Tutus, the Obamas, the Ahmadinejads, the Chavez's and even the Kardashians and the Dennis Rodmans.

    You have to read this. Winnie Mandela that bastion of freedom and liberty was probably responsible for up to 12 murders! And Tutu said this abut her:
    "It was as if Morobe and Cachalia and the relatives of her victims had not spoken. The TRC had attributed at least 12 killings to her and the MUFC, Trewhela in 2009 estimated 16 and David Beresford had listed some 14 actual and attempted murders. Despite this, at the hearings in December 1997, Tutu told Madikizela-Mandela "Many, many love you. Many, many say you should have been where you ought to be. The First Lady of the country…I love you very deeply…You are a great person" (His emphasis, Good 2002)." http://www.politicsweb.co.za/politicsweb/view/pol

  • Adriaan Pretorius

    OK so here is a better comment: I am a GREAT admirer of Archbishop Tutu and in South Africa he is respected and loved by ALL: Black, Brown AND White.
    For all the kind gentlemen on this site and especially that dear lady, here is a speech delivered by Ex (White) Pres F W de Klerk (spread over a few posts):
    Part 1:
    "The future of South Africa
    Worrying about the future is – and always has been – a central aspect of being a South African. Since 1652 visitors to our country have generally concluded that “it is a lovely place – but cannot possibly last for another five years.” However, time and time again, experience has proved that the pessimists were wrong".

  • Adriaan Pretorius

    Part 2:
    "Nevertheless, I believe that all these stories are creating a distorted picture of South Africa and its potential. I should accordingly like to bring some balance to the picture and spell out the reasons why I remain optimistic about South Africa’s medium and long-term prospects.
    It is important to retain balance in one’s assessment of our complex society.
    The fact is that there are often negative perceptions about Africa. It is interesting to note that before the FIFA World Cup that was hosted by South Africa in 2010, most foreign observers believed that the event would be a failure. According to a survey that was conducted before the event;
    •only 29% of those polled thought that the World Cup in South Africa would be a great success;
    •58% expected that there would be problems with security;
    •57% thought that there would be transport and logistics problems; and
    •59% thought that the average South African would not benefit from the event.
    Nevertheless, and after the event – the 2010 World Cup was generally regarded as having been one of the most successful and best run World Cups in history. According to a poll after the event:
    •72% fully believed that the World Cup would have a very positive or positive legacy for South Africa;
    •54% thought that it would bring great benefits to South Africa.
    •61% said that, as a result of the success of the World Cup, they thought that South Africa would be a good place to hold global events of all kinds.
    •42% felt more positive about visiting South Africa as a tourist.
    In fact, South Africa has, on the whole, done pretty well since 1994."

  • Adriaan Pretorius

    Part3:
    After decades of isolation and criticism, the new South Africa has emerged as a respected member of the international community:
    •We are regarded as an international model for democracy, constitutionalism, human rights and the rule of law;
    •We have set an example for national reconciliation and multiculturalism;
    •We have played a commendable role in promoting peace throughout our continent;
    •We have become a member of BRICSA – the most dynamic group of global emerging economies;
    •We play a leading role in international forums – in the UN Security Council and in the African Union.
    We have experienced 18 years of economic growth – interrupted only briefly by the global economic crisis of 2008:
    •During this period, South Africa, under the guidance of Trevor Manuel, implemented sound macro-economic policies that helped ensure steady growth rates rising to 5% in 2004 – 05. They also helped to protect us from the worst consequences of the 2008 economic crisis.
    •We have the 28th largest economy in the world. We produce 30% of the GDP of sub-Saharan Africa with only 6.5% of its population.
    •Our public debt is less than 36% of GDP – and external debt is only 16% of GDP. Countries like the USA, Japan, Italy and Britain would die to have such low debt ratios;
    •Tourism now contributes almost 9% of GDP – more than mining.
    •Automobile production – at 7% of GDP – is two and a half times bigger than agriculture. In 2008 we produced 600,000 vehicles.
    We have also made remarkable social progress in many areas:
    •The percentage of the population living in absolute poverty has declined from 31% in 1995 to 23% in 2008 – largely because of social grants.
    •94% of households now have access to drinkable water;
    •more than three million housing units have been built – enough to house almost a quarter of the population – with another million units in the pipeline;
    •three quarters of the population now has access to electricity and sanitation compared with only half in 1994;
    International observers are constantly reminded of our failures – particularly in the areas of education, labour relations, unemployment and crime. However, many are unaware of our strengths and achievements.

  • Adriaan Pretorius

    Part 4:
    South Africa does very well in a number of the categories assessed by the World Economic Forum in its Global Competitiveness Reports:
    •The regulation of our security exchanges and our reporting standards are the best in the world;
    •Our banks are the second soundest in the world and our corporate boards are the second most efficacious. Our financial services and protection of minority shareholders are third best in the world and our ability to finance local equity is the fourth best internationally.
    •South Africa is also in the top 20% in the world in respect of its legal rights index; investor protection; the quality of its management schools; reliance on professional management; the efficacy of its legal dispute settlement system; the size of its domestic market and university driven innovation.
    •We are in the second 20% with regard to air, road and railway systems; property rights; the protection of intellectual property; judicial independence; availability of the latest technology and the size of our foreign markets. Despite growing corruption our record is still better than most of our competitors in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

  • Adriaan Pretorius

    Part 5:
    I also remain an optimist about South Africa’s future because of the excellent foundation that our non-racial Constitution has created for present and long-term stability.
    Ironically, the virtues of our Constitution were best articulated by one of the ANC’s top ideologists, Deputy Minister Ngoako Ramathlodi. In an article in September 2011 he complained that during the negotiations “apartheid forces” had succeeded in “emptying the legislature and executive of real political power.” They had done this by “immigrating substantial power away from the legislature and the executive and vesting it in the judiciary, Chapter 9 institutions and civil society movements.”
    Exactly. The Constitution did not devolve absolute power on parliament and on the executive. It provided them with all the powers they needed to rule – but required them to do so within the reasonable constraints established by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. This means that power is, indeed, dispersed throughout society; that unconstitutional laws and conduct can be checked by an independent judiciary; that ordinary citizens can promote their legitimate objectives through civil society organisations and that they can appeal to Chapter 9 institutions to defend their rights.
    A second reason for optimism is that South Africans who support the Constitution are now fully in step with the best elements in the international community. Any government action that deviates too significantly from international norms of democratic and economic governance will be severely punished by markets and international opinion.
    Thirdly, no modern state can successfully govern against the will of substantial minorities. The United States would not be able to ignore the reasonable interests of any of its minorities. Neither can South Africa. There is no way that government will be able to achieve important national goals if it alienates significant minorities and interest groups.
    Fourthly, those who support pragmatic constitutional and economic approaches have an enormous advantage in the political debate. Ideological approaches – like apartheid, the ANC’s National Democratic Revolution and communism – simply do not work. They inevitably end in economic distortion or collapse – and always result in unacceptable human repression and suffering.
    Finally, support for the constitution is no longer a black/white thing. Black politicians, journalists, businessmen and religious leaders are in the vanguard of those who support the Constitution. They know that it is the best guarantee for the continuation of freedom, reconciliation and national unity – and they also know that it advocates transformation. The principles of democratic governance, openness, accountability, responsiveness and the supremacy of the rule of law are not alien ‘Western’ constructs: they are the fundamental requirements for successful societies everywhere – in Europe, in the Americas, in Asia and in Africa.
    South Africa will succeed – provided that we can work together as South Africans to support our Constitution; to demand the rights that it guarantees; and to achieve the vision of human dignity, equality and enjoyment of human rights and freedoms that it articulates.
    So the next time you see negative headlines about South Africa, I would invite you all to look a little deeper at the picture and consider the enormous potential that our country offers.
    I, personally, am confident that we South Africans will once again prove that the pessimists are wrong.
