Dubai Sentences European Rape Victim to 16 Months in Jail

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

Here's your war on women

Here’s your war on women

There’s a basic clash between two judicial and moral systems when it comes to rape. The Western system considers rape a crime of violence against the woman.

The Muslim system considers rape a crime because it involves extramarital sex and resolves the problem by jailing the woman or forcing her to marry the rapist.

When Western women go to places like Dubai or Doha imagining that they really are modern because they have skyscrapers, they are entering the jurisdiction of the Muslim system which considers unaccompanied women to be prostitutes who are fair game.

A young Norwegian woman has been sentenced to 16 months in jail after she reported a rape in Dubai.

The 25-year-old was in the United Arab Emirates on a business trip when she was raped and reported the assault to the local police. Dubai police did not believe her, and instead took her passport and jailed her on suspicion of having had sex outside marriage.

More accurately authorities didn’t care whether or not the sex was consensual because it’s a non-issue. If you find that a cow fell through your window, you don’t ask whether the cow intentionally did this. It doesn’t matter. And that is how Muslim legal systems see women. They care that an extramarital sex act took place. And since it took place, they blame the woman.

That’s the wonderful moral and legal system that the Western left keeps trying to import into America and Europe.

‘I received the harshest sentence for sex outside marriage, harshest sentence for drinking alcohol and on top of that I was found guilty of perjury,’ the woman told Verdens Gang.

‘It is a terrible situation she is in,’ said Gisle Meling, the priest at the Norwegian Sailor’s Church.

‘We are very surprised and had hoped it would go another way, but we live in a country which has a justice system which draws its conclusions with the help of Sharia law.’

Yes it did. This is Sharia law. It’s like wandering into Nazi Germany and being surprised that they don’t seem to like Jews there.

Under UAE law, rapists can only be convicted if either the perpetrator confesses or if four adult Muslim males witness the crime.

Under the Sharia-influenced laws, sex before marriage is completely forbidden and an unmarried couple holding hands in public can be jailed.

In other words, rape is legal under Sharia. Being raped is illegal.

I bet this poor dame is a left-leaning type who has no idea that reporting a rape is an admission of guilt in Sharia Land, where the conspiracy to silence raped women so men can get away with it is so entrenched, no amount of feminist clamoring would change the fact. Rape is pretty much de facto legal because if there’s more than one witness to rape, let alone the 4 required by Sharia Law, it’s a good bet they’re all participants in a gang rape and not one of them will squeal.

This is one area where indisputably, Mohammed was dead wrong.

    • oasis

Mohammad wasnt wrong. Man is wrong both in its interpretation and just blind ignorance coupled with inability to stand up and face the shame. Just my two cents. I am only human so I maybe incorrect. Fortunately for me so are the rest of u.

      • OfficialPro

what do you mean Mohammed wasn’t wrong?

        • defcon 4

If you’re a muslime, it’s dogmatic that Mohammad was never wrong. His words and actions are unquestioned, because they are the acts of the world’s most perfect man.

      • JoJoJams

Mohammed most CERTAINLY was wrong! And it all came about because someone accused little Aisha with impropriety with a young buck that was escorting her. In order to protect his little darling (who probably DID fall prey to human lust and had fun with the escort, over the old pervert mad mo), he came up with the “four witnesses” b.s. Because, well – you can NEVER get “four witnesses” to what is a crime! Who the #$%^& would rape someone where there could be one witness, let alone four! Yep – this edict was definitely spouted by an insane old ignorant fool – mad mo.

        • oasis

I replied too quickly without realizing the nature of this website. I cannot break through stone. Im no fan of the middle east having lived there 5 years and discriminated the ish out of. They are blinded by their interpretations just as some of you are by your hate and ignorance. Most haven’t done the research but talk out of u know whr. Peace and patience to all.

      • Ken Swan

you really are a worthless excuse for a waste of skin and air aren’t you????

    • Ken Swan

why did you automatically ASSume that this woman is a “left leaning type” She is NOT an American first off and secondly REGARDLESS of her political leanings SHE WAS RAPED asshat, but I guess in Your world that is ok (just like the moose limbs)

  • Veracious_one

Muslims have been known to force the rape victim to marry the rapist…

    • OfficialPro

what’s hilarious is that you never hear a peep out of the Atheist Left about this, though they routinely bash Christianity/Judaism for what’s in Deuteronomy where they allege that a raped woman has to marry her rapist. (That’s not actually what’s going on, the situation described in the Original Hebrew was a seduction, not a rape).

      • DogmaelJones1

You spoke too soon. I’ve written often about the Islamic “sex jihad” against European women in Europe and in places like Dubai, and I’m an atheist, and not of the Left. Read my Rule of Reason columns, please, and correct your hilarious perception of atheists. And if you doubt me, ask Mr. Greenfield for a recommendation.

      • stupocalypse

You all read out the same stupid books.

        • OfficialPro

Fundy-Atheists (Atheists who used to be Fundamentalist Christians and interpret the bible the same way even as an Atheist) interpreted it wrong, and Muhammad couldn’t even read. Some fundy-Islamist had to have read it wrong.

      • morris613

Actually in the Bible it says that the groom is forced to pay the marriage fee to the girl’s family and offer marriage. The girl isn’t actually forced to marry him. You can’t force a Jewish woman to marry, she has to accept the contract in front of witnesses of good moral character. Whether or not she agrees to marry him, he still has to pay up. It’s a huge amount, Identical to a divorce settlement in Jewish law.(As a matter of fact, in order to encourage marriage, it became Jewish practice to waive the grooms fee and it is now given to the wife in case of divorce or to a widow after the husband’s death) It would bankrupt your average guy and would mean that, in the end, he would most likely be unable to get married to someone he wants to later because of lack of finances.

        • morris613

Sorry mistake with pasting when arranging the first line the word “groom” was supposed be be in quotations to show sarcasm

I’m on the atheist left and I think it’s disgusting. In fact, this story was drawn to my attention by another atheist leftie – of which we have so many here in the UK. And Jesus was a socialist – read The Bible. ‘Woe unto the rich, for they have had their portion’.

        • John P.

“Woe unto the rich, for they have had their portion.” is your proof of Jesus being a socialist? That’s one of the biggest leaps of logic I’ve ever seen.

        • OfficialPro

That has nothing to do with socialism. That has to do with the tendency of the “rich” at that time and in that place to be decadent and wicked.

    • Everett Vulgamore

and then legally stone the woman to death

  • Veracious_one

If a woman alleges rape and cannot produce 4 witnesses, she is charged with adultery if married or having illicit sex if not married. In Pakistan for example 90% of women in prison have been convicted of adultery…

  • Gamal

There’s a good chance she’ll be raped in jail.

  • ElizabethMC

Being raped is illegal, says the guy wearing a dress

  • pennant8

It’s stories like this that illustrate just how unethical and immoral it is to put US troops on the ground in Islamic countries to support and prop up whatever Islamic government we happen to favor at the moment. Put US troops on the ground in any Islamic country and they are by default serving in the cause of Islam/sharia.

    • Tony Jacobs

The only countries in the region worth supporting are the Christians of Cyprus and Lebanon and the Jews in Israel.

New York University does not export their gender and sexuality studies program to the Abu Dhabi campus.

Ironically, the literature program over there looks more like a classic literature syllabus than the one on the American campus.

  • defcon 4

How come men are never charged w/the crime of adultery? Or are all these women committing adultery by themselves?

    • OfficialPro

      men are allowed to, apparently…

  • OfficialPro

Watch the NAG (National Organization of Gals) gang say absolutely NOTHING about this.

  • Bellz Webster

These laws are unjust. The Muslims and their religion is accelerating in numbers in most countries. It is said that 1 day, likely in the next 20 years, they will outnumber every citizen of that country and it will be taken over by them. Which religion looks good to you now? Christian rule or Muslims rule? The atheist need to consider this.

  • Twistedtory

As a secular American woman living in Dubai, I’d like to try to add some much needed context. While I agree 1000% that it is dead wrong to look at a person who has been raped as anything but a victim, the laws here do try to envision both sides of the story in reported crimes. So, if someone reports that they were assaulted, the police want to know if they provoked it or if there were extenuating circumstances, such as the guy who got hit owed the guy who threw the punch a long overdue sum or money, or was sleeping with his wife, or smashed his car, that kind of thing. The assault will still be prosecuted, but the courts may take the broader context into consideration when hearing the case. The courts here are not American, nor are they draconian, as both the author and others who have offered comments here seem to think. By and large – with this case being one of the few exceptions – they are fair and just, and westerners tried in civil, not Shariah courts.

It’s likely that the guy involved claimed it was consensual. It’s still dead wrong, she still should not have been punished. The problem is the complication of alcohol use. There is a gross misunderstanding here about it, thanks to the boozy Brits. Locals, especially law enforcement, think that those of us who drink, do so to excess and get drunk all the time. Because they don’t drink and have no ability to differentiate, they believe that even one drink – a beer or glass of wine – will make someone drunk. And, because they don’t have any personal experience with alcohol consumption to know, they assume that when someone is “drunk”, i.e. has consumed alcohol, that they will do anything, anything at all, that they are not in control of their faculties. I try to explain to local friends that I enjoy a glass or two of wine, but that doesn’t make me drunk. Nor does being drunk mean that I would do something that I would not do sober – that’s just an excuse people use.

Anyone who has been to Dubai knows that women are, by and large, treated with great respect and appreciation. That low glass ceiling in the good ole U S of A doesn’t exist for me here and my career has hit highs I didn’t know possible. I feel safer here than I have anywhere else in the world. And the government goes to great lengths to empower and promote women’s active participation in public life – politics, business, social issues, etc.

Those who deride my comment as a knee-jerk reaction will go unanswered; I have neither the time nor the stomach for your brand of hypocrisy and xenophobia. If, however, someone wants to have a legitimate and informed discussion about the matter, I welcome your reply.

    • Drakken

Your defense of the indefensible and trying to explain it all away really does sum up the amount of bakeesh that you have been paid. My corporate HQ is in Dubai and we never allow our female employees to go out unescorted because of the problem of arab men spiking their drinks and then raping them because they know they can get away with it. So spare me your stupidity.

    • OfficialPro

Yeah, they PRETEND to treat you with respect…it’s all taqquiya.

      • Madame_deFarge

Yes, twistedstory is either a concern troll or a practitioner of sanctioned lying her/himself. There are no excuses or acceptable explanations for the Arabic treatment of females.

    • Madame_deFarge

Utter nonsense. I have none of the habits or practices that apparently drive Arab men to behave as wild animals. I am a mature woman, modest in dress and behavior though I doubt that would protect me if I chose to take a walk unaccompanied by male in an Arab country. The climate created by these cretins assure that I would never desire a visit to their world with or without a male ‘protector’. I am a modern American who despises the vulgarity in our society in dress and behavior including the strip joints the Arabs seem to enjoy so much. However, Sharia is not the answer or cure for those disgraces rather a change in societal attitudes as a whole. My guess is the pendulum has swung about as far as far as it can go to the left and we will begin to see a return to a more civil, mannered world. But you, Missy, are a disgrace to womankind making excuses, acting as a mouthpiece for this barbaric and backward culture and their vile treatment of women.

    • Tony Jacobs

Oh, right, let’s blame the rape on “boozy Brits.” In fact, I bet the Brits are Jews, and really should be held accountable for all rapes everywhere. I’m sure that the court was very fair, considering she was a woman and probably gagging for it, you know what these drunken slut western types are like. except the serious ones like you, who of course deserve special treatment.

The Norwegian government is reluctant to tackle Muslim rape gangs in their own country, let alone medieval Islaomland.

    Western countries should be advising
their citizens, especially young women, not to travel to Muslim
countries, to work or on holiday. Where if they drink alcohol, have
sex with someone they are not married to or get raped, risk a long
    prison sentence.

    The Norwegian governments response to
this case is pathetic they should be bringing out the big guns and
    complaining to the United
    Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

  • OfficialPro

I don’t have hate and Ignorance. Mohammed was the one talking out of his male donkey.

  • Tony jacobs

Ha ha. The UNHRC ignores genocide to concentrate on demonising the Middle East’s only democracy. It is chaired by the BIGGEST abusers of ‘Human Rights’ on the planet.

  • Budhamissesyou

Muslims completely believe she would have wanted it and not been a victim of rape. I know plenty of them and how they talk about women is so bad it makes you sick. They are all smiles and niceness and then just act like arseholes. It’s incredible really. They act like this on the world stage, on every level, in every dealing. And western countries still treat them with respect and let them in, It’s atrocious.
