Ex-New Orleans Mayor Nagin Indicted for Katrina Fraud

I’m still waiting for the indictment of the media for its fraudulent Katrina reporting which depicted the hurricane aftermath as Mad Max on water, while refusing to report on the disastrous aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Mayor Ray “Chocolate City” Nagin attacked Bush for not doing enough for New Orleans, but he was doing alright for himself.

Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin was indicted Friday on charges that he used his office for personal gain, accepting payoffs, free trips and gratuities from contractors while the city was struggling to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

The federal indictment accuses Nagin of accepting more than $160,000 in bribes and truckloads of free granite for his family business in exchange for promoting the interests of a local businessman who secured millions of dollars in city contract work after the 2005 hurricane.

The indictment also accuses Nagin of getting free private jet and limousine services to New York from an unidentified businessman. Nagin is accused of agreeing to wave tax penalties that the businessman owed to the city on a delinquent tax bill in 2006.

Don’t worry, the same things are going on in New Jersey right now. This type of corruption is endemic and the politicians who grandstand about disaster relief aid, usually have a plan for profiting from the disaster.

Flying to Jamaica 82 days after the storm on the dime of a city contractor who is now in jail while people were still trying to get back in their homes, while cops were still finding bodies in cars and attics – the second term was a complete abdication of his duty and a squandering of an opportunity for him to lead. And frankly it probably postponed this city’s recovery for three or four years.”

At least he waited 82 days. Obama would have gone on vacation next week.

But don’t worry about Ray. He’s got a book out. “Katrina’s Secrets: Storms After the Storm.” I’m guessing it doesn’t mention any of the real secrets about all the kickbacks he took.

Nagin’s long-awaited account, Katrina’s Secrets I: Storms after the Storm, lays out the days leading up to and following the storm. At once stirringly, elegiac and disarmingly candid, this spellbinding reckoning delivers exacting detail, while boldly exposing secrets that, until now, have been glossed over or spun out.

It’s probably not that disarmingly candid.

“Hurricane Katrina left us on a quarantined island of sorts where we were surrounded by evil and ill intentions,” Nagin writes in Katrina’s Secrets; Storms After the Storm, Vol. 1, due Wednesday. “Our neighbors were not very neighborly when it really counted. They along with others helped make an intolerable Katrina experience akin to being in hell without ice water.”

At least Nagin will have time to work on Volumes 2, 3 and 0 during his time in prison. Which will also be akin to being in hell without ice water.

And he has a consulting gig, in what else… Green Energy. Because when you leave one kind of fraud, you go into another kind of fraud.

Ray Nagin is a big believer that climate change is real and our only way out is to stimulate our economy by developing and mass marketing green energy alternatives. He is a user at his home, office and drives hybrid cars. During his time as Mayor of New Orleans he pushed innovative green initiatives that included two of the largest LEED certified affordable housing communities in the country. The city also has fleets of biofuel buses and vehicles.

I guess that explains why he was unable to evacuate the LEED affordable housing communities with his biofuel buses.

OMG….but why am I not surprised?

LMAO at Nagin's BS political hypocrisy for his lack of taking responsibility for Katrina… while all of those school buses were sitting idle in flooded parking lots, that left residents helpless, with no means of escape, and then he has the gall to blame the Bush administration for responding late. This azzhole deserves to be hung by his nuts.

Or the entire empty Amtrak train that was held till the last possible moment before leaving……….

  • Mary Sue

Oy, no surprise that School Bus Nagin is corrupt. How else do you end up drowning school buses because you want top of the line Greyhound coaches with Lazy-boy seating to evacuate the city with?

This idiot was given warning after warning that a monster Category 5 hurricane was on its way to the region. What did he do? Nothing. Instead of moving thousands of people, vehicles, buses and equipment to higher ground, he did essentially nothing. After the storm hit, he was screaming and yelling like a fool.

I'm actually kind of surprised that the Obongo-Holder DOJ would prosecute a black leader of Nagin's stature for anything short of a fully-videotaped murder rampage.

    • jakespoon

He's not convicted yet,and if they don't move it out of N.O. he may not be.

Corruption?!! In New Orleans? Non-sense, just business as usual in Dixie. A couple of hundred non-existent police officers were drawing pay checks, a couple hundred police that deserted their post, a Cadillac dealership looted by "police" after the storm, I think the voters of N'awlins got what they voted for.
