FBI Head Accuses Obama ATF Nominee of Being Soft on Gangs

This is a very troubling allegation, because as has been documented, much of the gun violence in the country is really gang violence. And the urban Democratic Party has close links to gang leaders.
Obama has nominated B. Todd Jones, the former US attorney in Minnesota, to head the ATF, a controversial appointment for a controversial agency at a controversial time. A political nominee at the ATF is liable to ignore the real problem of gang violence and instead begin using the ATF as a political tool for going after the arms industry and legal gun owners.
Except that it appears that B. Todd Jones was already turning a blind eye to gang violence. This charge is made by none other than the former director of the Minneapolis FBI office, Donald E. Oswald.
“I and many others have concluded B. Todd Jones is substantially motivated by personal political gain and not by doing what’s in the best interests of the citizens he is sworn to protect,” the former FBI Director writes. “He was and still remains a significant impediment for Federal law enforcement to effectively protect the citizens of Minnesota from violent gang, drug and gun activities.”
Oswald notes that prosecutions under Jones had dropped 40 percent in a single year and terrorism prosecutions had fallen even more drastically and firearms prosecutions had fallen 36 percent.
Oswald’s letter further criticizes Jones for his support of Assistant U.S. Attorney Carol Kayser, 51, the daughter of one of his mentors at the Minneapolis law firm of Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi, where Jones had been a partner, and a major financial contributor to Democratic politicians. Kayser came to the office in 2008 from the U.S. attorney’s office in Atlanta.
Jones appointed Kayser as head of the violent crime and drug section after she worked in the office for less than a year, Oswald said.
Oswald concluded that Jones did so because he was close to her father, Thomas C. Kayser, 75. Campaign finance records on file with OpenSecrets.org show that Thomas Kayser and his family members have given more than $352,500 to Democrats since 1990.
Kayser and his wife, Marlene, have given more than $17,000 to Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. They gave $14,464 to Klobuchar between 2006 and 2011, and $1,000 to Franken in 2012. Carol Kayser gave $340 to Obama in 2011. “It’s evident that Jones protects Ms. Kayser at all cost to ingratiate favor with others in the Democratic Party,” Oswald wrote.
“Kayser,” Oswald writes, “consistently refused to file federal charges in armed bank robbery cases and significant violent gang investigations.”
Why was this nexus of the Minnesota Democratic machine so reluctant to prosecute organized crime? And why is Obama nominating a man with a track record of favoritism and incompetence, widely disliked within the law enforcement community to such an important position?
