"Yes, in my lifetime (although it seems to have been working in the Great Depression too) it began with JFK telling us that we were going to put a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s, with nothing to back that vision up."

Kennedy had nothing to back him up personally nor did he seem to have any sensible or concrete plan, but the American people did have the resources and "cultural permission" along with "cultural nous" I guess you could say. But Kennedy got the credit. So...it's the style that counts? That's the deadly lesson most people seemed to have learned.

If you have the vision, the rest happens by magic. Just ask POTUS.

Magic is funded by taxes. But hey, tax income is infinite for the fed, isn't it? Just like our deficit and all those other magic numbers. Just keep banging on the computer keyboard until you have enough money. POTUS can do that. He's the master magician.

"These are the people who love Freakonomics, who enjoy all sorts of mental puzzles, who like to see an idea turned on its head, but who couldn’t fix a toaster."

I've banged my head on the desk so many times with the exact same thought.

What people learn today is only helpful in persuading each other who deserves to be leading among themselves according to their standards. Political correctness and fundamentally flawed education institutions got us here.

Thank these geniuses who probably could not fix a toaster or portable lamp even if alive today:

Karl Marx
Antonio Gramsci

"It’s why so many countries are so badly broken because they go by appearances, rather than by results."

When Bill Clinton was running for President, I started to see this play out in national politics in a whole new way. He was style over substance and not just the illusion of competence. It has unraveled quickly after that.

Yes, in my lifetime (although it seems to have been working in the Great Depression too) it began with JFK telling us that we were going to put a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s, with nothing to back that vision up. We have faced many a similar situation since, with government decreeing that this thing or that thing would be done, and in many cases the declared result has miraculously come about, most often because private people dedicated themselves to achieving the goal.

Today, our government keeps telling us we'll have 30 mpg cars, then 40 mpg cars, and now whatever they've fastened on for the American auto industry. So American autos that look like they're made of cardboard (and are probably more vulnerable than that) will be created because the EPA wants it that way.
