Gun Control Senator: “You Can’t Stop Government”

manchin-2-1217

That’s an ironic assertion in this context, but we are talking about a man who ran for office wielding a rifle, only to pivot into gun control, so if Senator Manchin knows what he’s saying, it’s not obvious.

Sen. Joe Manchin III, West Virginia Democrat, has remained hopeful that he can re-introduce legislation to expand gun-purchase background checks after one he crafted with Sen. Pat Toomey, Pennsylvania Republican, failed in the Senate a month ago.

But the ongoing scandal surrounding the IRS certainly doesn’t help, he said on a West Virginia radio program Friday.

“People are saying, ‘Joe, we read your legislation, it makes all the sense in the world and we’re for that legislation – we’re just afraid government won’t stop there.’”

“The difference is this,” Mr. Manchin continued. “Let’s say the EPA, which we’re fighting every minute of every day, because we believe that they’re overreaching, they’re creating rules and regulations. They’re interpreting and they’re doing things on their own because they are a federal agency. The Second Amendment is [in] the Constitution – it can only be changed by the legislative branch of government.”

“Sure, it doesn’t help us – heck no,” Mr. Manchin replied. “But the bottom line is, Hop, you cant stop government; you can’t stop this great country, you can’t stop the entrepreneurial spirit.”

One of these three things doesn’t fit. But don’t tell Senator Manchin that. You can either stop government or this country and its entrepreneurial spirit. It’s one or the other.

But you can see why a man who believes you can’t stop government would champion gun control.

The entrepreneurial spirit as John Locke, Adam Smith, and our Founding Fathers envisioned it, is not altogether consistent with widespread government control. To them, the value of government to the entrepreneurial spirit was to establish a body of laws that keep the markets honest, fosters competition, and protects our citizenry from external and internal aggression.

Today, of course, our government has abandoned all of those functions of government. Competition particularly has become a dirty word to our political leaders.

Sadly, Manchin may be correct about not being able to stop government; the next two national elections will constitute a referendum on that issue.

West Virginia don't be fooled. Manchin is a big government progressive. West Virginia, "almost heaven", until big government took over.

      I have a question –

Why, oh why, did West Virginians keep sending Jay Rockefeller to the U.S. Senate – the man is the ultra-example of a robber baron.

  • Lucubration

There's some wild irony there, Senator.

  • dave

Maybe he should sit down and reflect on what he just said,,,,

  • VLParker

Hey, Senator Manchin, you moron, the legislative branch of government cannot change the second amendment. It would take another Constitutional amendment to change it. Idiot.

  • onecornpone

Seriously? Did this Manchin imbecile graduate Jr High?

He is NOBODY to o-Flim-Flam unless he can deliver the severed head of the 2nd Amendment to his master, on a silver platter.

Nice to see he wears the blown-out hairdo even when hunting…
    Where's your camo cap, Joe?

He would have probably made a good coal mine foreman, or union boss, but he proves that DC politics is NOT for the unsophisticated.

      Nothing but a photo-op.

Elect him! He is a perfect politician, knowing how to hold to mutually exclusive concepts in his small mind at the same time that he is talking out of both sides of his mouth….with a forked tongue….and using cliches to boot.

The gov't, under Obama Inc, is a mobbed up entity. This is why it is impossible to stop them, as they are a law unto themselves as they eschew the rule of law! Moreover, this is precisely why gun control runs through ObamaCare and why it must be gutted, step by step, before it takes control over EVERYTHING. It is why it was rammed through, and the IRS was placed in charge of it, knowing full well that they were under Obama Inc's control – http://adinakutnicki.com/2013/02/18/obamas-march-

And this is just the tip of what is in store, if not repealed.

Obama comes from the same place that had Daley the Elder in power for 21 years (1955-76) and son Daley the Younger in power for 22 (1989-2011). Both Daleys regarded Chicago as their personal fiefdom, to be ruled by iron fists.

The only way they leave us to stop them is the way of the Colonists.

When West Virginia seceded, the rest of Virginia gave a sigh of relief.

We can stop government. We can refuse to give them our money and we can kill their agents. #TAXREBELLION

The Senator seems to be a bit nuanced. Can we say STUPID!

Joe Manchin is a dago fraud from Fairmont, WV.

    His family name is Mancini.

It appears that Senator Joe is one of those who were elected under false pretenses, (Obama?) and as soon as in office turns on the true Joe. Seems to me that the voters in WV might have been able to detect this before the election and publicized it widely. I always suspect ANY democrat who spouts stuff we want to hear, until he proves his merit. This doesn't happen often. I believe mostly that to BE a democrat you must either BELIEVE in gun control (and all the other democrat positions) or you will COME to believe it or else. Something strange has always made we wonder about people who say they are democrats. You can just about nail down every position on every issue. Since Senator Joe has been in office long enough to begin working on his re-election, from here to where does he go? He's pretty well locked in to gun control.

" You can't stop government"… is a statement so opposed to The Constitution and American Liberty that it is hard to believe he said it. Fits very well though with, "you have to pass this Law to see whats in it", and, "we are going to FUNDAMENTALLY change America". Using the tax department to oppress 60% of the not yet indoctrinated is minor compared to what he really wants. Frankly, I think the military would side with American Patriots.
