Freedom aspirant Turks know where the bread and butter is and plenty of that comes from tourism and its knock on.

Same goes for Egypt or did, pre Mursi.

The tourists are/were Europeans after a spot of sun and sand with an element of oriental exotica thrown in.

Turkey was also a big Israeli destination and I'd imagine or more accurately, hope that any Jew in his or her right mind would now avoid the place like the plague. (Erdogan basically is your classic Muslim Quranic steeped anti-semite and quite frankly, despite the veneer, such a bigot he'll never change.)

So the answer is, I guess, pragmatism.

All those blue eyes, crammed into cheap flight jets, heading south brought pot loads of money.

I'd guess that plenty of Turkish and Egyptian businessmen, eyeing up the choice between a new Merc or disdain towards the infidel saw the wealth those tourists brought and decided on the Merc.

With the money also came the numbers and with the numbers a one way cross cultural exchange especially amongst the young. They saw fun, sex, music, holiday hedonism and fashion and quite naturaly wanted to be a part of it.

That is what both of the leaders hated, especially the hard line Mursi because along with the dilution of the faith it indicated Islamic inferiority. And that would never do.

So the basic answer is that those young Turks obviously weren't rioting for Christian rights per se, but the plurality, freedom and moolah those Christians brought with them.

There are definitely radical tribes and jihadi groups in Indonesia, and the government is not always as aggressive as they should be (though we are now following their lead in showing so much tolerance for radicals...I wonder why...)

But you're right for the most part. It's just that Indonesia is not culturally homogeneous even under Islam. They might have a huge percentage of nominal Muslims, but for various reasons it has been difficult for jihadis to impose sharia outside of a few local tribes. At least in modern times.

Indonesia is a different case than any other, but you're points are totally valid.

Indonesia is tribal, but not along the lines of Arab cultural traditions. Which is to say that while there are similarities, Indonesian tribes never really coalesced under sharia or any other unifying ideology. Which is why a few of the sects are just as radical as the Arab Pagan jihadis, but they can't achieve dominant cultural hegemony because Indonesian tribes never really trusted one another even to the degree that jihadis seem to.

There is more to it than that, but I can't quite figure out a clearer explanation. It might have to do with the great difficulty of conquering Indonesian islands all at once. They were never unified, so it's hard for jihadis to lead unified attacks. Even with modern social media, the best they can manage is to all show up on the same day to protest Western videos or whatever.

defcon 4
The post was somewhat facetious but let's take it straight.
Obama is a dedicated socialist and authoritarian who will discard any facts which clash with his politics and will continue to embrace Islam no matter how many evil acts the followers of Islam commit.
To that end, he will continue to invite Islamics into his administration and into the Whitehouse. If that backfires because those who accept his invitations find that it damages their credentials at home, makes their fellow Islamics suspect them, so much the better.
