Jeb Bush’s Immigrant Fertility Welfare State Solution

The general theme is that you need more immigrants to subsidize the social services of an aging population. But before Jeb Bush goes down the road with that argument, he might want to look at Europe which imported huge amounts of immigrants to balance out its aging population with horrifying results.

Speaking at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s “Road to Majority” conference in Washington, Bush said the country needs an influx of younger workers to replace aging ones to retire in the coming years.

“We’re going to have fewer workers taking care of a larger number of people than the country has a social contract with, to be able to allow them to retire with dignity and purpose,” he said. “We cannot do that with the fertility rates that we have in our country.”

That problem could be solved with more immigrants, Bush said.

“Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population,” he said, adding that immigrants also create new businesses and are an “engine of economic prosperity.”

Let’s start with the more “intact families” thing. 42 percent of Latino kids are living in single parent homes. That’s better than the number for African-Americans, but much worse than the white 25 percent number. And the Latino broken home numbers have been steadily rising.

And that’s a welfare state disaster.

Among Latinos, unmarried parent families are roughly three times as likely to be poor as married families. Tragically, over half of Latino children born today are born outside of marriage. The rate has increased from less than 40 percent in the 1990s to more than half—nearly 53 percent—today.

You can’t fill a hole with a hole. Importing large numbers of people who are going to be more welfare dependent than the native population not only fixes nothing, it will force deeper cuts to medical services for the native elderly to fund the welfare state for the newcomers.

Amnesty will make it that much harder for Americans to retire. It will fill the country with more poor unskilled workers dependent on government aid and hijacking the political system to get it as soon as they can vote.

There’s no prosperity here. Increasing the welfare state ten times to pay for an unsustainable welfare state is a recipe for national bankruptcy.
