Article 2 of the Kuwaiti Constitution states, “The religion of the State is Islam, and the Islamic Sharia shall be a main source of legislation.” It also says in the Hadiths that “When a man mounts another man, the throne of Allah shakes.”

Some take this to mean that Allah is really excited by homosexuality, but other verses in the Koran and the Hadith make it clear that he isn’t into it at all.

And out of concern for Allah’s shaky throne, the Kuwaiti authorities have conducted a roundup of gay people at internet cafes. In Kuwait, homosexuality is only punishable by seven years in prison. (That’s moderate compared to Pakistan or Iran.) Despite that it’s fairly widespread [2] because of Gulfie sex segregation and contempt for women.

A woman has been dismissed from her professorial chair in Kuwait University for suggesting that that homosexuality exists in the emirate. Dr Alia Shoaib, aged 31, claimed that lesbianism was rampant among studients and that she had witnessed two women making love in the university toilets. One of them was heavily veiled, a manner of dress normally associated with militant Islam.

Dr Fazia Khorafi, the female president of Kuwait University, who was responsible for her dismissal, claims that homosexuality does not exist in Kuwait. “Ours is a Muslim society and homosexuality is against Islam”, she says. Dr Shaoib maintains that the segregation of men and women in Muslim societies has generated a repressive sexual climate.

The spread of AIDS has pushed Kuwait to crack down even harder on homosexuality [3]. While officially Kuwaiti authorities claim that AIDS cases are few and only come from outside the country, it’s rather clear that Kuwaiti men are spreading the disease inside the country.

Personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department during an extensive campaign at Internet cafes and suspicious places in the six governorates have arrested 215 young homosexuals and lesbians of various nationalities, reports Al-Anba daily.

A security source said 30 low rank officers took part in the campaign and some of the arrested persons are believed to be residence law violators and others wanted by law for committing petty crimes or on civil charges and yet others for gambling.

The emphasis here is on foreigners, because Kuwait is yet another clan state where arresting the natives can be dangerous if they are from influential families.
