Low on Cash, Hamas Joins Syrian Civil War

Hamas used to swim in huge pools of Iranian oil money. But that was before the Muslim Brotherhood and Iran went to war over Syria.

Despite its Brotherhood identity, Hamas took a while to break off from Iran and Syria, and it still maintains some ties to Iran, but the Rials clearly aren’t coming in the way they used to.

Iran is less interested in funding Hamas and the Brotherhood has its hands full in Syria and Egypt and a bunch of other places. Active Jihadists in Mali and Nigeria are sucking up cash and there’s the Taliban too. The oil-rich gulf states have a lot of money but there are also a lot of terrorists with their hands out.

Hamas did start a war recently and scored cash for it, but the big show is in Syria. And if you’re not in Syria, no one wants to hear from you.

So Hamas, following the lead of its Qatari bosses, is going down to Syria. Where it is in the strange position of fighting Hezbollah. (You can see why Daniel Pipes has suggested that we would be better off letting the Syrian war run indefinitely.)

Syria is bashing Hamas as a bunch of Zionist sellouts (it’s the only insult in the region that anyone pays attention to.) And Hamas is pleading for cash.

In a major speech yesterday, Hamas leader Khaled Meshal admitted that Hamas is suffering from “financial distress” as a result of the “Arab Spring.”

He called on Arab nations to send money, saying they shouldn’t do it as only aid but as a “partnership” – presumably to aid Hamas’ efforts to destroy Israel. He seemed to be asking for money for weapons, saying “There is an international contest to deprive the Palestinian resistance of the weapon, and the international efforts of harm and prosecution have multiplied, and the our battle requires preparation and considerable money and effort.”

No doubt. But Hamas hasn’t actually destroyed Israel for all its years of trying, so the big money guys in Dubai and Doha are putting their money into Syria where seem to be actual results.

And Hamas has to suffer the indignity of trooping down to Syria to acts as Qatar’s Islamist mercenaries.
