Margaret Thatcher’s Final House of Commons Speech

With the passing of Margaret Thatcher, it seems only fitting to remind ourselves of this moment in her final House of Commons speech. It is an issue that came up strongly in this last election and Thatcher’s response is worth studying by anyone who finds themselves in this argument.

Thatcher begins by exposing the true premise of class warfare rhetoric and challenging it based on the facts. It’s a vital technique for anyone debating the left.

People on all levels of income are better off than they were in 1979. The hon. Gentleman is saying that he would rather that the poor were poorer, provided that the rich were less rich. That way one will never create the wealth for better social services, as we have. What a policy. Yes, he would rather have the poor poorer, provided that the rich were less rich. That is the Liberal policy. . . .

The inability of too many Republicans to give a response this simple and plain to cynical class warfare tanked the last election.

The left represents a national decline. Thatcher understood that and articulated it. As did Reagan.

Beating the left will not depend on embracing gay marriage, illegal immigration and the rest of the package, but communications to Americans that a life under the left is a worse life.
