McCain Admits New Immigration Reform Law is Same as 2006 Reid-Kennedy Bill

Nope sorry, this is not some great new immigration reform plan. It’s the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006 aka Reid-Kennedy with a slicker sell.

If you don’t believe me, maybe you’ll believe Senator McCain who [2] was a pivotal legislator in both amnesty proposals.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) hailed the late Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy on Monday as a bipartisan group of senators laid out new principles for comprehensive immigration reform — perhaps handing opponents a weapon.

Kennedy and McCain led the effort for broad-based immigration reform that failed nearly six years ago, and McCain said this new push was nearly the same.

“If we do succeed, and I think we will, it will be a testimonial to Ted Kennedy’s effort years ago that laid the groundwork for this agreement,” McCain said. “You will find that this agreement has very little difference from that of the legislation that was led by Sen. Kennedy some years go.”

Perhaps Senator Rubio would care to explain Senator McCain’s claim that the new “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” is almost exactly the same as that old discredited piece of “Comprehensive Immigration Reform”.

In fact, based on what we know of the new Gang of 8 proposal, it’s fairly similar to the 2006 amnesty proposal. There’s some border security measures, some penalties for hiring illegal aliens, a requirement that illegal aliens pay a penalty before going through the legalization process and some guest worker provisions.

Rubio was quite critical of amnesty in the past. In 2009 he criticized Reagan for i [3]t when he was running for the Senate, saying, “If you grant amnesty, the message that you’re sending is that if you come in this country and stay here long enough, we will let you stay. And no one will ever come through the legal process if you do that.”

That’s still the message, whether it’s in 2009 or 2013.
