McCain’s Syria Expert Doubles as Syrian Lobbyist

At the Daily Caller, Charles C. Johnson reports on the curious tale of Elizabeth O’Bagy, McCain’s Syria expert slash Syria lobbyist.

On Wednesday, Secretary of State John Kerry encouraged members of the House of Representatives to read a Wall Street Journal op-ed by 26-year-old Elizabeth O’Bagy — an analyst with the Institute for the Study of War — who asserted that concerns about extremists dominating among the Syrian rebels are unfounded.

“Contrary to many media accounts, the war in Syria is not being waged entirely, or even predominantly, by dangerous Islamists and al-Qaida die-hards,” O’Bagy wrote for the Journal on Aug. 30. “Moderate opposition groups make up the majority of actual fighting forces,” she wrote.

I’ve had this editorial endlessly forwarded to me. Probably so have you. Unfortunately by moderate, O’Bagy means the Free Syrian Army which ethnically cleanses Christians.

But in addition to her work for the Institute for the Study of War, O’Bagy is also the political director for the Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF), a group that advocates within the United States for Syria’s rebels — a fact that the Journal did not disclose in O’Bagy’s piece.

In an interview with The Daily Caller, O’Bagy said that despite her title as the group’s political director, she is paid as a contractor.

She insisted that she is not involved in the political lobbying that SETF does. “They kind of have two departments within the Task Force — one focused on working with the government on the Hill on advocacy and then the other working inside Syria and directly implementing government contracts,” she said.

In speaking with TheDC, O’Bagy regularly insisted that she was not a salaried employee of SETF, but a paid contractor acting in an advisory role.

“I’m the political director and aid coordinator, and that’s my official title at the organization, but that’s mostly because it provides me an opportunity to engage on humanitarian issues and to be a part of some of these larger government contracts going to humanitarian aid,” O’Bagy said.

What kind of humanitarian aid are we talking about?

The Foreign Policy news site reported in June that SETF “boasts extensive contacts with rebel commanders” and “spent months lobbying Congress, the State Department and the White House for everything from small arms to anti-tank and and anti-aircraft weapons to body armor to advanced communications equipment for the rebels.”

O’Bagy is quoted in the Foreign Policy piece saying that the Obama administration’s June decision to openly arm Syrian rebels didn’t go far enough. ”Small arms and ammunition really only get you so far against airplanes,” she said then.

Ah that kind of humanitarian aid. See the whole story in Charles C. Johnson’s piece.

Let the Muslim countries show their true colors by proving “humanitarian aid” to the Syrian insurgents and nothing should come from freedom loving non-Muslim countries….

Sounds O’bagy has a slight conflict of interest. Her attempts at whitewashing away the genocidal intentions of the Syrian rebels and their Al Qaida contingent is particularly laughable. NOthing like having paid liars as the primary source of intel for our federal government.

  • DogmaDave

Obama and his lackeys including Rino McCain are selling arms for the international bankers who make compound interest on the debt. As long as both sides of conflicts get armed the globalists make money while advancing their population control agenda.

I’m going to have to rain on her and their extremely gullible useful idiot parade, but just a cursory examination of Islam reveals that the existence of so-called “moderate Muslims” is a complete and utter impossibility. As a matter of fact, the first and foremost prerequisite of Islam, is the total, complete, and unconditional submission of all Muslims to the “will of Allah” under the extremely harsh penalty of death for blasphemy and apostasy. Thus, what is this so-called “will of Allah”? In essence the so-called “will of Allah” is Sharia, which is Islamic totalitarian law.

Hence, for a Muslim to become a true moderate in the Western sense of the word, that person would necessarily have to disavow his or her total, complete, and unconditional submission to Sharia under the penalty of death for blasphemy and apostasy, and at the same time incur a death penalty as a result. Not to mention that such a person would not become a moderate Muslim at that time, but instead an ex-Muslim apostate with a death sentence hanging over his or her head.

Therefore, Ms O’Bagy and her unhinged supporters are all very gullible useful idiots to say the least!

Moreover, a simple cursory examination of the Islamic world also reveals in its simplicity that ALL ISLAMIC STATES TODAY ARE ALSO ISLAMIC TOTALITARIAN HELLHOLES in one form or another, because while Islam may be considered to be a religion by the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims, in reality more than anything else it is a very rabid form of totalitarianism that controls every single aspect of a Muslim’s life even when they don’t live in an Islamic totalitarian hellhole. As a matter of fact, Muslim immigrants to the West just like clockwork always flat out refuse to assimilate and integrate and instead form Muslim enclaves that in time inevitably morph into Muslim no-go zones ruled by Sharia and that operate as tiny Islamic sovereign statelets within the larger host infidel states.

Indeed, you don’t have to become an Islamic expert to figure that out. All you need to do is open your eyes and take a look around the world.
