The Muslim world is not exactly a source of brilliantly original rhetoric. It usually comes down to blood. The red stuff [2]. And that’s what both sides in the Arab Spring III: The Summering are vowing to spill or sacrifice.

First, Morsi offers some of his blood. Since he’s actually sitting in a fortified palace surrounded by heavy security, it’s not a very sincere offer.

“I am prepared to sacrifice my blood for the sake of the security and stability of this homeland,” Morsi said during a 45 minute address to the nation.

I’m sure the Egyptian Red Crescent will be thrilled at Morsi’s eagerness to be a blood donor. I hear he’s a B negative. But if Morsi really wanted security and stability for Egypt, he wouldn’t have gone Full Tyrant so fast and rammed an Islamist constitution down the country’s throat.

Talk about sacrificing blood is cheap. Compromise is hard. Especially for a totalitarian ideology.

But the military which, unlike Morsi, at least is in the sacrificing blood business, is also eager to communicate its willingness to be blood donors for Egypt.

But after Morsi spoke, Brig.-Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued a statement that the army was prepared to “sacrifice” its blood to save the country from an outbreak of terrorism.

In a post titled “The Final hours,” the Egyptian military said on Facebook, “We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool,” the military said in a statement released under the words, “the Final Hours.”

We live in a strange world where coup announcements are made by a military order on Facebook along with pledges to sacrifice blood. Web 2.0. It’s so modern.

But the good news is that once all the blood starts being spilled, you can look for Morsi and Al-Sisi to be voluntary blood donors.
