The story of Katherine Russell, Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s American wife may be an all too unfortunate metaphor for what happens when the liberal Eloi meet the Muslim Morlocks.
Russell is portrayed as a typical product of the liberal system; nice, tolerant and eager to make the world a better place.
At high school her personal motto was ‘Do something about it or stop complaining’. She dreamed of going to college and joining the Peace Corps.
The eldest of three daughters, to emergency physician Dr Warren Russell and nurse Judith, hers is a background steeped in the values of family and education.
It would be hard to imagine a childhood more rooted in America’s pilgrim heritage than Katherine’s. It is in there in the names of the towns – Plymouth, Dorset, Greenwich – where many of her friends still live and writ large in the wholesome values of the one-time Honors student’s home life.
And her parents could see no reason not to get on board with their daughter converting to Islam and marrying a Chechen Islamist. That would be intolerant.
Katherine Russell is believed to have married and had a daughter with Tamerlan Tsarnaev three years ago, having become a Muslim following her freshman year at Suffolk University in Boston.
Neighbours said that Mr and Mrs Russell had been “very supportive” of their daughter’s decision to take up Islam, which saw her begin wearing a veil covering her hair, in line with Muslim practice.
They said Ms Russell appeared not to return to university after her conversion and the birth of her daughter, who is thought to be called Zahara.
And supportive is what you’re supposed to be. Who cares about the petty details.
Katherine Russell, the widow of Boston bomb suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was ‘an all-American girl who was brainwashed’ by her extremist husband according to one schoolfriend.
By the time she was 21 she had married him and borne his child, Zahara, now three. She had converted to Islam, hidden her tumble of chestnut hair beneath the hijab and undergone a change so profound that today few friends profess to truly understand it.
It was during that time that she converted and her youthful priorities appear to have changed as she left in 2010 without graduating.
By then her relationship with Tsaraev was intense. Not even his arrest for violently assaulting her in 2009 could change that.
Of course not. Abusing women is part of an Islamic marriage. Once you tolerate part, then you have to tolerate the whole and blame yourself for what goes wrong.
The story of Katherine Russell is the story of Europe and America. It’s the story of what happens when you tolerate and tolerate until you’re wearing a Hijab and a black eye and your husband roams the streets murdering your friends and neighbors in the name of the religion you accepted even though you don’t really understand it.
And most tellingly of all, the only papers seeming to cover this angle of the story are British. The American press is still claiming that Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s had nothing to do with it.
Tolerance Uber Alles.
