New Book Claims General Petraeus Was Taken Down by the CIA

Benghazi: The Definitive Report is going to get more attention for its claim that the Benghazi attack happened as retaliation for assassinations being carried out by CIA “hit squads” against Al Qaeda leaders in Libya. The entire narrative depends on the usual “anonymous sources” which might exist or which might be entirely made up, and fits a little too neatly into Blowback Theory.

To believe it we have to assume that the CIA had the operational capability to carry out on-the-ground assassinations of terrorist leaders who were well protected, but not the capability of defending their own facility.

Tying in with that, the authors claim that General Petraeus was taken down from within the CIA for his support for such attacks, rather than intelligence gathering. The CIA does have a record of forcing out leaders they don’t like.

‘It was well known to Petraeus’s Personal Security Detachment (bodyguards) that he and Broadwell were having an affair. He wasn’t the only high-ranking Agency head or general engaged in extramarital relations, but when the 7th floor wanted Petraeus out, they cashed in their chips,’ Webb and Murphy write.

The book continues: ‘The reality of the situation is that high-ranking CIA officers had already discovered the affair by consulting with Petraeus’s PSD and then found a way to initiate an FBI investigation in order to create a string of evidence and an investigative trail that led to the information they already had—in other words, an official investigation that could be used to force Petraeus to resign.’

Webb and Murphy said the CIA bureaucracy wanted Petraeus out of the CIA. Senior officials were furious over the way he had been running the agency since he was appointed in September 2011.

He was turning the agency’s focus from intelligence gathering and analysis to paramilitary operations, including drone strikes.
Additionally, he ran the CIA like a four-star general, instead of treating it like a political institution, the authors say. His management style made countless powerful enemies within the CIA.

‘It’s almost like they wanted him not just to resign but that they wanted him kicked out of the political game for at least a number of years,’ Murphy told MailOnline.

Webb said his sources in the FBI told him federal agents wanted to close down their investigation when they learned that nothing illegal had happened, but they were told to keep digging. The FBI investigators, Webb says, never wanted to out Petraeus’ affair.

Certainly the entire investigation was highly suspicious and clearly political. The CIA corporate culture is highly dysfunctional and the organization is of dubious. It’s fairly poor at intelligence gathering compared to its rivals.

Porter Goss, who came out of the CIA, wasn’t able to hang on and carry out the necessary reforms and was forced out by a palace coup. It would not be surprising that Petraeus was also forced out. While the authors would seem to suggest that Brennan will do badly as well, I suspect that Brennan is far more in tune with the CIA culture than Goss or Petraeus.

Most Republicans stupidly perceive Petraeus to be a hero because of the surge that they totally misconstrue as somehow leading to victory in Iraq. Iraq wasn't a victory as none of the stated goals and objectives as set forth by the GWB administration were ever attained because they were literally impossible, as all Muslims are our eternal enemies and Islam is not a so-called "Religion of Peace." The truth is Iraq is one of the greatest strategic blunders ever in American history.

In Afghanistan Petraeus was the architect of the insane rules of engagement that led to so many American troop deaths. Nonetheless, he is still worshiped by many stupid Republicans.

    Petraeus was/is an incompetent fool!

The Butcher of Baghdad would have his chemical weapons at the very least now by bribing the UN. He would either sit by and let Iran start a nuclear war with Israel if he didn't attack them himself. With what the Moslem Brotherhood is doing, I could imagine what Saddam would do to either provoke more chaos, use it to mask killings, or start annexing other countries.

Never had a problem with ousting Saddam or with targeting OBL, as I'm not a delusional leftists or a self-hating Ron Paul kook. However, I had a major problem with the two nation building mission fiascos that followed because Islam is not a so-called "Religion of Peace." It's a very aggressive form of totalitarianism instead, and the classification of Muslims into so-called "moderates" and "radicals" is utterly absurd to say the least. Indeed, all Muslims are jihadists, either violent jihadists or non-violent stealth and deceptive jihadists. Otherwise, they are blasphemous apostates that per the dictates of Islam must be executed.

Very apparently like most Republicans you have been blinded to the hilt by political correctness and as a consequence don't have the first clue about Islam and Muslims. So what else is new?

In theory it's fine. In practice, it got fouled up to say the least. What we should have done was obliterated all military opposition and then made a simple offer of a Japanese style constitution. They can't meet those terms? They get a sort of quarantine. Of course details matter. It could have been done but leftists brought in their delusions and forced unrealistic compromises. They ruin everything they touch.

What we should have done was obliterated all military opposition and then made a simple offer of a Japanese style constitution.

Nah…after obliteration, we should have gotten the hell out of Dodge ASAP, deliberately leaving behind our death and destruction to fester and to serve as deterrence. Of course, the Left, Ron Paul kooks, and other self-haters believe that such action would create terrorists, but that's why they are delusional. Since Islam is not a religion but instead a very aggressive form of totalitarianism, and Muslims are not terrorists, they are violent and non-violent stealth and deceptive jihadists instead, as jihad and terrorism are two very distinct and different things.

Jihad is holy fighting in the cause of Allah to make Islam supreme and can be both violent and non-violent. While terrorism, on the other hand, is always only violent and is perpetrated for various political causes. Indeed, Timothy McVeigh didn't blow up the Murrah Building in the cause of Allah to make Islam supreme.

Nevertheless, today both manifestations are deliberately equated as being the same thing to take the focus off of Islam, which is supposed to be a so-called Religion of Peace. Yeah right.

Benghazigate stinks to high heavens, and if there is any justice in this bleeding planet, all the major players will see the back end of Federal prison doors slamming shut.

In fact, in comparison to Watergate which is still bleated about, Watergate is not even kindergarten play, it is nursery school!

That being said, while the General surely had a weakness for femme fateles (it is not as if this is anything unusual for Washington's top leaders, after all, Billy boy diddled under the Oval desk!) his pre-mature departure was duly timed – http://adinakutnicki.com/2012/11/18/benghazigates

This ain't over until, asis said, the fat lady sings…

I don't believe the public are hearing 10% of what actually took place in Benghazi.
There's way more to this story of where, and how Libya's weapons are being "redistributed" in the Middle East, and to whom. Like Fast and Furious," the Benghazi hearings have been one big, drawn out, stall, and hoax.

You know it, If you do your homework you will also know why Stevens was in Benghazi, meeting with the Turkish Ambassador because he was trying to thwart off those weapons because they had weapons of mass destruction in them, AND THIS IS WHY SYRIA HAS SARIN GAS NOW, and THE REASON PANETTA Went to Syria to see if they moved the SARIN GAS, it is because he wanted to see if they really did confiscate that weapons cache that was sitting on a boat that very night of Sept/11 on the Turkish border. It is all about this giving them to these muslim radicals and compliments of this administration. DO YOU GUYS REALIZE 60k people have died due to this situation. NOT JUST THE 4 WHO WAS TRYING TO STOP IT or at least 2 trying to stop the guns, but 4 because Tyrone and Glenn went to help Stevens and met their demise and YES THEY WERE ON THE PHONE ASKING FOR HELP, only to hear Stand Down, and they DID NOT DO A DAMN THING., ZERO didnt even call to find out about it, he went to Vegas. NOW WHAT IS GOING TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS IS MY WISHINGS. Makes me want to puke, and we are all under the rule of this terrorist, and these koolaide drinkers are all worried they will lose their free meal ticket that isnt there int he first place. I tell l ya, these guys all need to be taken into custody and we need to get on with REBUILDING OUR AMERICA BACK TO WHAT SHE WAS BEFORE SHE WAS ATTACKED FROM WITHIN. So come on and lets do something why dont we

OH and by the way, the Radicles had these weapons and Syria took that regime out and they confiscated these weapons, that were all from the good ole USA, by way of this POTUS THAT IS A POS

Organizations evolve to serve their elites. It would be impossible to force accountability on any organization with such a murky, ill-defined, secretive purpose as the CIA. The CIA serves the interests of
its elite employees. The military serves the interests of its elite employees. The pharmaceutical
industry serves the purposes of its elite employees. Organized religion serves the interests of its elite employees. Banks serve the purposes of their elite
employees. Corporations serve the interests of their elite employees. Governments serve the purposes of their elite employees. Occasionally their interests are more or less congruent with the interests of everybody else. Often, they injure the wellbeing of everybody else. We are not ants or bees with each member of the nest droning on for the common good. We are individuals working for our own interests as we understand (or misunderstand) them.

    • Cat K

I get why your name ismsuicide prevention….how depressing your point is – not that I disagree with what you are saying. But, I do think in past times there WAS a general patriotism and feeling of belonging to a people, the American people, that mainly served everyone well enough. Thoguh, elites benefitted the most. Today, even that general good feeliing is unfashionable (thanks in the most part to our corrupt media).

Feelings of patriotism and belonging to a people easily coexist with venal, selfish behavior

"Feelings of patriotism and belonging to a people easily coexist with venal, selfish behavior

That's why details matter. Being a loyal Nazi or loyal Saudi subject is not quite the same as being loyal to the US constitution. Being loyal to any dogmas without careful examination is also dangerous no matter where you're born.

Every once in a while they throw us a bone, otherwise we're all left out with nothing. It's so easy to devote your life to narcissistic illegal purposes and nobody ever finds out.

It's not like you're over-simplifying a cynical Machiavellian statement that might have been taken seriously if you'd been more realistic and nuanced. No need for that.

You have all the fatalism of certain jihadis we hear about. Hmmm…

"We are individuals working for our own interests as we understand (or misunderstand) them."

Some times it's in the interest of the individual to try to live up to the ideals and promises he committed to. It's not like people are perfect or simple, but most people probably at least convince themselves that they're doing the job they're supposed to do. It's just that so many of them are deluded, and that confuses even more people and so forth.

Leftists are the cause of most of today's problems, directly or indirectly. Most people don't even have the guts to behave as selfishly as you portray.

If the CIA is "fairly poor at intelligence gathering compared to its rivals" and if it refuses to do things like drone strikes then what on earth is it good for? Time to restructure the whole American intelligence apparatus. Get people in there whose allegiance is to the United States not to political correctness.

Michael DeWayne Brown (born November 8, 1954) was the first Undersecretary of Emergency Preparedness and Response (EP&R), a division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This position is generally referred to as the director or administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He was appointed in January 2003 by President George W. Bush and resigned in disgrace following Hurricane Katrina in September 2005.

Brennan is not "far more in tune with CIA culture," unless you're talking about high level subterfuge, where he converts to Islam in order to cover his tracks. Except that it is now transparent – according to John Guandolo (former FBI expert on Islam.)

Fact is Brennan is the guy who handed the Kill Box to Obama – and Obama carried out some of the drone strikes personally. Brennan now owns Obama. Brennan, as overseer of the drone-kill program, was in a position to rescue Chris Stevens. Stevens is likely to have earned Brennan's wrath when he repeatedly used the terms "Islamic radicals" and the like in official communiques. Those words are forbidden in the Brennan/Jarrett Whitehouse.

Son, let me ‘splain something to you. I am one of the authors of the book in question. In no shape or form do I describe in the book anything about “CIA hitsquads” because there was no such thing happening. I describe JSOC direct action operations in the book. JSOC is military not CIA. The thesis of the book is that JSOC and CIA operations were not being deconflicted and thus there was unexpected blowback.
