New Yorkers Take Last Ride on Carriage Horses Before DeBlasio Ban

nyc-mayors-race-de-blasio horse-and-carriage-central-park

It’s a tradition for New York City mayors to start banning innocent things that everyone before them found completely inoffensive. For Mayor Bloomberg, it was large sodas. For Red Bill de Blasio, it’s carriage horses.

Bill de Blasio, like any good Communist, isn’t just pushing the horse ban at random. His elevation was made possible by NYCLASS; a bunch of rich people posing as animal rights activists who don’t think that ordinary tourists should be able to ride horses in their backyard.

The man behind the Anti-Horse Jihad is Steve Nislick, a real-estate tycoon with an eye on their stables, and a hand in Bill de Blasio’s greasy pocket.

In the slimy world of New York politics, Nislick found useful idiot environmentalists to pursue his land agenda, and when Speaker Quinn proved to have more ethics than to go along with his horse ban, he turned to a slimier fellow; Bill de Blasio.

Bill de Blasio had made common cause with Communist terrorists. Steve Nislick’s Anti-Horse Jihad was an easy one to get on board with.

According to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, “Edison Properties, LLC operates as a real estate manager and developer. It owns and operates parking facilities in New York, New Jersey, and Maryland; mini storage stores in New York; and workspace and office buildings. The company was founded in 1956 and is based in Newark, New Jersey.”

Nislick’s business owns more than 40 parking facilities around New York, New Jersey, and Baltimore, according to the Edison Properties website which also promotes storage facilities and office space.

Malone charges that Sayers, the half million a year ASPCA CEO has a conflict of interest linking his name and that of ASPCA because the carriage organization claims Nislick and his company covet the valuable stable properties where NYC carriage horses are housed.

It is no stretch to see how a stable housing 1,500 pound draft horses could easily be converted to a parking garage or storage facility. Four such stables serve Manhattan. A fifth closed its doors last year.

“We’re dealing with a powerful real estate mogul and the ASPCA,” Malone charges.

Malone, a driver and owner/operator carries on in the tradition of his father who founded the carriage firm in 1964. By 1987, Stephen was driving with his dad. Their horses, primarily Percheron/ Belgian/ Standardbred mixes are six of 215 carriage horses registered in New York City to operators of 68 licensed carriages.

With Steve Nislick playing Cruella deVille and Bill de Blasio playing whoever gave her a license to turn dogs into fur coats, the end of the Central Park carriage horse may be here.

And saddened New Yorkers and tourists to the city are lining up to take their last ride with the first victims of Bill de Blasio’s rule.

Tourists are heading to Central Park to take a ride in the park’s famous horse-drawn carriages – before it’s too late.

“I want to enjoy them before they go away forever,” said Andrea Varela, 32, of Mexico, who said she always looks forward to a carriage ride when she visits the city.

“You see them in movies and TV shows. You want to come here and experience it. They are such a part of New York, of the park,” said Brenda Shannon, 50, of Belfast. “People love them.”

“Many people like us come here to ride them. It may hurt the tourist economy if they do away with them,” added her husband Ciaran.

Driver Thomas Hennessy said business had picked up as customers came for what could be some of the last carriage rides in the city — but he feared his livelihood would disappear under the new mayor.

“This is my career. I won’t go out without a fight. Yesterday we were so busy. People came to enjoy their last rides. They were telling us ‘We can’t believe what the mayor is doing,’” he said, adding his horse Billy Bob is well cared for and healthy. “I don’t know what else I would do if I can’t work doing this anymore.”

Bill de Blasio is claiming that he’s doing it for the horses. Like everything else that comes out of the former William Wilhelm Jr’s mouth, it’s a lie.

De Blasio and other opponents of the horse-drawn carriages say it’s inhumane to make the horses work the dangerous city streets.

The horses don’t work city streets. They mainly work the park. They move around the park on the city street before entering it. And the horses, that Bill de Blasio claims to care about… they’ll be slaughtered.

communism great for people animals and the economy! Send the politicians and Peta to the glue factory and keep the horses

    • HenDanK

I will bet you anything those horses will not be treated any better now that they are under the”protection” of these so-called animal rights activist. In fact, I shudder to think about their fate.

      • Deborah G

They usually starve them . I have seen these rescues all except one starve the horses and don’t give them the attention and medical care they need.

  • mindRider

Instead of lining up for a last ride in the carriages the people should line up in front of city hall for a first picket & protest against Red Bill.

    • Omar

New Yorkers need to engage in non-cooperation with incoming mayor Warren Wilhelm, Jr. The incoming mayor is too extreme to hold any political office in the country.

      • nomoretraitors

Yet 74% of those idiots voted for him so they’re getting what they deserve

        • Dorothy Myers

Don’t know why people stay in New York City except that (1) they’re in public housing and on welfare; (2) they’re a drug dealer; (3) they’re a rich person on Wall Street who can afford to insulate themselves from unpleasantness; (4) they share Di Blasio’s totalitarian beliefs; (5) they are a parasite who lives off govt favoritism and the cronyism.. Those are the ones who voted for Di Blasio, I bet.

      • Deborah G

    • Deborah G

They should just run him out

  • A Z

The ban is to protect the horses.

What it will do is kiII horses. It will. Before long if people like Blasio has his way horses will be relegated to wildlife refuges and zoos.

If the zoo has a bad day like say Kabul or Damascus, species extinction.

The refuges will end up like the Black Hills or Cherokee land in the Appalachians. It will be set aside, … set aside … set aside. There will be a big ribbon cutting ceremony with politicians preening about how they are doing the correct thing. They will cut the ribbon with their right hand

With there left hand they will let so many immigrants legal and illegal into the country that they will spill over into the refuges one day.

    • Daniel Greenfield

And it isn’t even about the horses. It’s about the guy who paid for De Blasio’s election getting his hands on some real estate.

Though I’m sure they’ll move a handful of horses somewhere with a big ceremony. Lea Michele will be there.

And the rest of the horses will be slaughtered.

      • A Z

I did not want to hear that.

I figured it was ideological. That is ideological yet stupid like the 40 oz. soda

I did not figure it a was a quid pro quo, money for power.

Blasio gets the power. He is not greedy. But power is a currency itself just of a different form

Blasio will cash his power in for greenbacks from time to time to enjoy the good life. The power already gives him a mansion.

        • Deborah G

The morons who elected this guy will find NYC a wasteland but there will be a big LBGT community with aids for them to enjoy

          • A Z

According to the LGBT community historiography, AIDS is a problem in the gay community because a small percentage of gays not representative of the community did not practice safe zex, but that is all take care of now.

In the meantime reading JMG I saw that of there were a vaccine these guys would all be tossing the their condoms aside and living Dan Savage’s open marriage concept to the hilt.

Which reminds me gay marriage cannot be traditional marriage. An open marriage is defined differently than traditional marriage.

      • A Z

A documentary film of the horse at work in central park, being slaughtered and the new land use by the Blasio supporter and the campaign contribution to Blasio would be devastating.

I don’t live in NYC. I believe you do. I also believe you could suggest this to some film maker which I am not.

      • Deborah G

They will be they will be sent to an auction and right on a truck to Canada because the liberal morons haven’t a clue.

  • Crassus

I hope one of these horses takes a dump on deBlasio’s brand new shoes.

  • Kwan

Horse rides in the park! Something of a bourgeoisie pastime that a hard-core leftist like de Blasio might find offensive to his proletarian base.

    • guest

A horse ride is exciting. you give a kid a horse ride and they might become veterinarian, a zoologist or something equally important. they might have a love of wildlife (no pun intended).

Divorce them from all that they will just be interest in whatever the current human fad or fashion is. They won’t give a rip about nature.

They’ll be prim & proper epsilons just the way the liberal alphas want them to be.

      • Deborah G

BUT they want you to accepot the LBGT agenda instead . Hey your boy could become a ballerina

    • Deborah G

he is a disgrace. NYC is becoming a place where the only ones left will be Communists and welfare folks

      • pupsncats

        Isn’t that the case today?

getting there. It is the laughingstock of the world now just like all the lefts great accomplishments

      • BS77

Not just New York…..you are witnessing the decline of a once great nation…the leftist agendas are ruining everything. I was very upset to hear about the carriage horses being phased out by the leftist dictators. Read Animal Farm. Get educated about the left.

        • Deborah G

I am very very educated about the left but you know what’s funny? It really is very simple. They are ALL COMMUNISTS simple to understand wrong all the time.

          • paul_vincent_zecchino

            Deborah G –
Agree. It’s simple: this is the genocidal face of communism in action. Communists are liars, subversives, and killers. They hate life, and first kill the animals, and then the families who love them.
That’s what communists do, then they plunder what’s left, and kill one another over it.

        • Dorothy Myers

All animals are equal but some are more equal than others. Socialists want to be the ones who are more equal.

    • Deborah G

he would probably force the carraige drivers to goive every kid in da hood and their families rides for free

  • UCSPanther

I think once DeBlasio is done with New York, it will be too dangerous to take a horse carriage ride there unless you want the thrill of getting attacked by ‘hood bandits Wild West style….

  • DogmaelJones1

Maybe someone should persuade some bored teenagers to play the “Knockout” game on DeBlasio.

    • guest

      Bad ideal.

Now documenting it, if it happened, or refusing to give aid I agree with.

I am kind of torn about refusing to give aid. I can think of 2 reason why not helping would be bad , but I can make a cases for not helping.

      • Drakken

That DFLer communist got what he deserved, I just wish they would have beat him again. This dumbazz actually thinks those girls should not be charged with a crime but given social services.

It was a freaking billy club. This was premeditated. It was not premeditated to go out and beat someone , but they were prepared to hurt, injure maim for life or kiII anyone who got in the way of their theft.

There are already enough programs out there. At the local community college they have a program for the disadvantaged/minorities called Upward Bound.

I have seen schools pay 33% more for minority undergrads than others. That might have been with private contributions for the difference. But it strands. There are programs and opportunities for minorities.

          • Deborah G

  • mikesbuffalo

so its human to slaughter them . what did you people vote into office now.

  • mikesbuffalo

so its human to slaughter them . what did you people vote into office now.

  • palominogal

If a single one of those horses ends up at slaughter, then it’s because their owners are heartless, miserable humanoids and didn’t care about them to begin with. Unlike 20 years ago, there are all kinds of horse rescue places around. Nonprofit sanctuaries, independent rescuers, municipal animal care facilities, etc., etc. In every state in the union. There’s NO EXCUSE for any of NYC’s horses to go to slaughter, save for the fact that their owners are #$%holes who are pissed because they just lost their meal tickets.

    • nomoretraitors

No excuse to ban the horse drawn carriages either. Isn’t the left supposed to be concerned about jobs?

      • palominogal

This is about the horses and finally dealing with their miserable lives on the streets, shackled in 200+ pounds of tack, choking down exhaust and dodging traffic in freezing cold and nauseating heat while pulling stupid obese tourists around. Never getting to be horses. And who knows what their lives are like after hours. Enough! (And just because they’re “off the streets” doesn’t mean they won’t be used for other things, like special events and weddings.) It’s ABOUT THE HORSES and not propping up/engineering people’s anachronistic career choices. Every single one of us on this planet has to adapt. And the 1850s have come and gone. Time to deal with it.

        • NAHALKIDES

If this truly were about humane treatment of the horses, you might have a point. But it’s not – by driving the carriage owners out of business, DeBlasio figures he can seize their property outright or just force them to sell it to his friend and campaign financier Steve Nislick. Understand now? This is outright corruption: Nislick gives DeBlasio money, in return for which DeBlasio brings the power of the government to bear on certain landowners who are to be deprived of their livelihoods and property.

I don’t know how well the horses are being treated – probably pretty well and much better than you say, because the owners have a financial interest in their health, and there’s no reason to suppose they’re inhuman monsters (like DeBlasio and Nislick). But I’d say the horses are better off alive and pulling carriages around than being slaughtered, although possibly some of them think it’s “better dead than red,” i.e. being forced to live in DeBlasio’s NYC.

          • Deborah G

        • http://omgweboughtthefarm.blogspot.com/ Native Merlynder

Are you going to take a draft horse home? What about 200 of them? These horses were created to do this work, not sit around the front porch and get fat. The unintended consequences of them not having a job will be getting loaded onto a ‘meat truck’ for Canada. They have good lives now, working for their living, as well as the hundreds of people that take care of them and suppliers, too. This is a land grab and the new mayor is going along for the ride. Not saving horses, but ensuring their deaths.

          • Deborah G

100% true. Most carraige people love their horses, they don’t think its odd to live in the city. until a few years ago there were several stables in the city. Horses are happy if they are fed groomed and get good Medical care. All of this is being provided. The fact they can’t run in a field? Go to boarding stables most of them dont get turned out much either, want them to be free? BUY them pay for them to be turned out .

          • AAJPS

Shows how much you know about horses and what equals happiness. Health and food does not equal happiness, research shows that horses stress levels and overall affective state is much better when they do not live in stalls and get to spend the majority of their time kicking around being horses in fields. A horse in a stall usually only gets fed 2-3 times a day, whereas they evolved to eat constantly; their digestive system requires regular food and free movement- that’s why so many horses have problems with colic. Additionally, grooming actually can interrupt a horse’s own thermoregulation- there’s a reason horses tend to roll after getting groomed- and it’s because they are fluffing their coats back up to either deal with allowing sweat to evaporate, or to deal with protection against the cold. Again, just because a horse is ‘comfortable’ medically and fed, does not mean it is happy. Are YOU happy just because you are healthy, fed, and clean? No, there’s a lot more to life than that, and I wish people would stop simplifying animals like horses. Maybe a handful enjoyed tooling around a city, but I would stake my education that the rest maybe appear to enjoy it- but they don’t know any better. Maybe it is all about a land grab, but I’m not unhappy about it, and I am optimistic to hope that the majority won’t wind up in slaughter because there is so much buzz around them that I think rescue orgs will step up. But if not, at least they are not being replaced by more horses will get to slave away in humane confines.

          • Deborah G

FYI I happen to own one of the best known stables in the East and my husband is an Equine Vet. Better not stake your education on anything.

          • NAHALKIDES

Oh boy – another nature-worshipper who believes that wild animals in nature lead lives of unbroken peace and joy, until vile man interferes and ruins everything! I wouldn’t call myself a horse expert, but common horse-sense tells me that life on the prarie must be pretty tough for a horse – cold, not a lot of food and water sometimes, and certainly no health care (I’m sure you’re an advocate of universal coverage (at someone else’s expense, of course), but apparently that doesn’t include animals). And don’t the stallions fight brutally among themselves?

Frankly, I’d rather be well-fed and cared for by people, and have a warm stall to sleep in at night, even if I did have to get some exercise and fresh air pulling a carriage around some of the time. It’s just common horse-sense – and too much to expect of the progressive mind, apparently.

          • Deborah G

FYI the people who have these horses love them and really try to give them the best they can. If you look at the picture the horse is well coverd in fat, has a blanket over his back and everyone hugging him. yeah that seems like a bad deal.

          • Dorothy Myers

You’re right about the short lifespan of horses out in the prairie. We have horses at our place who are in their 30s and still healthy and fat. If they were out with the mustangs, they’d probably be dead. They have shelter and feed and get turned out and ridden if they’re up to it. Palominogal and AAJPS are fairly ignorant.

          • palominogal

            Well said, AAJPS.

          • Dorothy Myers

What? I know something about horses, having been an instructor and rider for over 40 years, and I haven’t yet heard from my horses whether they are happy or not. I wish people would stop putting human emotions into horses. Horses like having a job to do, generally. They don’t like being overworked or overloaded, but these big draft horses pulling carriages are not being overworked. You state that the horses are fed, healthy and clean, so you don’t think they’re being abused, do you? You ignore the fact that a dictator like Di Blasio should not have the power to order dissolving of the jobs of the drivers and the horses so he can have his crony build something on the stable property. Nobody should have that power.

          • gypsyrose1

This past winter, my horses spent days at a time confined to their stalls because the outdoor conditions were too dangerous to put them out. The only colic I dealt with had nothing to do with being confined. My vet assured me there was nothing that could have detected or prevented it. When we did get the horses outside, they barely moved around because they were being careful about the footing. They were also more than happy to return to their stalls after being out for a short time. Feeding grain 2x/day is normal at the majority of stables. Eating hay 3-4x/day is sufficient to keep them busy for a few hours. Wild horses eat constantly because they never know when they will find food. Domestic horses don’t have that issue and they can go for at least 4 hrs with no food intake.
Yes, horses roll in the dirt to help insulate them in the winter and dry off and protect against insects in the summer. The carriage horses don’t need to do that, so keeping them clean doesn’t harm them.
You’re hilarious when you say the horses may appear happy, but they don’t know any better. I can say the same thing about people who think they are happy, but are willfully ignorant about what is going on in Washington, DC. Don’t disturb them. They think they are happy.
The rescue orgs would rather take in the neediest horses, not healthy, out of work carriage horses.

          • palominogal

Total fallacy. Any horse owner who knowingly and willingly sends a horse to auction because it can no longer be a meal ticket is a terminal creep and that horse was destined for that pathetic fate no matter what. But by and large, it’s a cheap scare tactic. Way too many alternatives for that to wash.

        • Deborah G

Then you take a few and board them on Long Island or Jersey at your expense. Put your money where your mouth is. Pay the farrier , vet and board then come talk to them. rescues? ONLY one I have ever seen has fat healthy horses,

We have been called in by the ASPCA and the State many times to rescue horses out of Rescues. you are just another clueless impractical fringe horseperson that may or may not even own a horse but a self declared expert. Come to my farm one day. I’ll teach you about life. My husband the Equine vet will be happy to show you the documentation and the rescues still residing here because of said abuse. Just what are your credentials?

          • palominogal

I own horses. They are rescues, live on a ranch as a group, and get excellent care. There are three excellent rescues within 50 miles

          • Deborah G

Obviously you have zero in New york and the fact you say RANCH? There aren’t any Ranches here. New york is expensiove to have horses on any highly taxed property so the horses starve

          • palominogal

Well, that’s unfortunate—regardless of geography. (Sounds like the poor horses in New York can’t seem to catch a break.) But I’m here to tell you that there are good rescues everywhere out there in the larger world – - and trailers have been invented to get them there. Your experience with problem rescues doesn’t negate the fact that life on the streets of New York (and elsewhere) as a carriage horse is a miserable one.

          • Deborah G

You;d be surprised. My husband has gone on calls to the city. They are well fed, well bedded and blanketed. IS a city barn optimal? Nope but is starvation slowly acceptable at a “rescue” Nope.

Go to petfinder.com and see the many thousands of horses already needing homes. There are sanctuaries out there but the odds of these animals ending up in them are slim to none. Horse slaughter plants have reopened out west. Educate yourself.

      • palominogal

We’ll, the process of rehoming horses isn’t instant soup, but it’s done every day. Horses are trailered to new homes all over the country. I’m pretty up on the subject, actually, as I have four rescues of my own. How many do you have?

The majority of rescues are full and have waiting lists. Those spaces are needed for horses in desperate need. If they take in healthy carriage horses, they won’t have room for the truly needy. These pictures show what type of horse really needs help.

Putting businesses that use horses out of business eliminates the horses. Is it really in the interest of the horses for them not to exist?

    • Candace Ware

You actually buy that drivel? BAHAHAHAHAHA!! Oh, brother. I agree, there’s no excuse for that pitiful “documentary”. Schlockumentary is more like it. Dig deeper sweetheart. (HINT: but not in the AR garden of lies and propaganda.)
You know, you can go tour the stables any time. They are very open about respectful, non-violent visitors. Bet you won’t though. Too attached to the handwringing and weeping.

      Jessica -

Don’t let them play on your emotions. Look up Steve Nislick. He’s in parking garages. Ask yourself, ‘who else is in parking garages’. As seasoned cops about parking garages and who often profits by them.

  • NERDWORLD PROBLEMS

The people should threaten what the dog owners did when England banned the fox hunting. The dogs were rendered useless so they killed them all, if they threaten to do the same with the horses maybe this nut will back off. By the way, good job NY on choosing the new guy, this one is sssssooooooooo much better than Bloomberg. I think the Big Apple is completely full of worms.

That is exactly what will happen here. You can’t give away 200 horses, they will be taken to the meat wagon, .50 cents a lbs. And PETA is allowing this to happen, while being pious and Vegan.

      • Deborah G

50 cents? try 11 cents these days

THANK YOU for this awesome article about my beloved carriage business! If you cannot get to NYC, please make sure you come and actually SEE who we are here https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Famous-Horse-Drawn-Carriages-of-Central-Park/143353929036608

COMMINISTS decide for everyone else what their income and livlihood should be. This is a disgrace putting families with time honored businesses out of business. I really HATE the OBAMA DeBlasio Communist agenda

  • pupsncats

The future of New York-Communists fighting the Muslim Islamists. The only problem is the Commies have banned all means of self protection and the Islamists don’t think twice about strapping bombs on little girls. Guess who comes out on top?

  • Hard Little Machine

Use people instead of horses in true Stalinist tradition. Why have a bike share program when you can have Sedan Chairs?

  • paul_vincent_zecchino

This story is the true face communism, the genocidal, animal-abusing reality behind the ‘do it for the children’ smiley face.
DeBlasio fools only those who wish to be fooled. The wankers, tossers, and toffee nosers who comprise the communist-crony Elites will use him, and then toss him to the horse grinder when they’ve no further use for him.
Isn’t it a blessing that we live in a Net-centric Era which exposes the rats the marxstream media still won’t mention.

  • paul_vincent_zecchino

Communists and gangsters work well together. They are liars, subversives and killers who gass off about ‘social justice’ and ‘it’s for the children’ all the while plotting genocide.
Communists hate life. The Left is hate. Communists are dialectic materialists who connive to get as many material things and riches and power as they can by all necessary means, while ridding the planet of as many ‘useless eaters’ as possible.

In every Constructed Fraud such as the Zecchino Estate Grift, pulled by Lifespan HMO and its greaszeball ‘partners’, and this ‘kill the horses to profit from the stable lands’ scheme, you need a Fall Guy.
The perfect Fall Guy is the target of your scheme, the one standing in the way of it. In this case, it’s the carriage drivers. So, to get the lands they use for stables, you paint them as animal abusers and falsely accuse them of every heinous act imaginable, so that no one notices the tiresome collection of cronies and statists and collectivists who stand to reap windfalls by stealing the stable lands.
This is so old and it’s worked so well until now, because the Net exposes these rats to our fellow citizens.
Next time, they need to bury the bones deeper than the fantastic reach and power of the Net to unearth and expose them. Best they bring their lunch.
Today, citizen reporters use the reach and power of the Net to expose cronyistic rats and the politicians who do their bidding, falsely claiming to save lives and ‘help’ when in fact their actions invariably destroy life and property.
Never in their wildest dreams did societies’ many little cancers, termites, and spirochetes imagine something like the Net which would expose their dark designs.

Good old-fashioned profit motive. Wonder who is putting the profit into the mayor’s pocket for getting the horses out of the stables so the developer can build. Follow the money. Same way in every socialist regime — those at the top engage in cronyism, manipulation of govt regulation to suit those in power, trampling on anybody lower than them on the ladder. Funny how those bureaucrats in the former Soviet Union had dachas and private cars and rode down a lane in the middle of thoroughfares cleared just for the politburo. Maybe Di Blasio will take advantage of the perks of being in charge to get some payoffs for himself. Of course, he doesn’t care about the fate of the carriage horses after he destroys their jobs, nor does he care about the carriage drivers he puts out of work. No, like all totalitarians he lives to impose his will on others.

  • 1Lionel

The losers who elected de Blasio are going to find out before long that he cannot deliver on any of his promises while he sets about making the city unlivable for those who actually pay taxes. It is too bad the vast majority did NOT vote for him – he garnered some 12% of the votes of all those eligible to vote. Voter apathy brought his lunatic into Gracie Mansion.

  • PickledJuice

Ha! I didn’t vote for this guy! Damn it! Just because he’s married to a..,, people got suckered bad! One after another epic fail… I think he just wants to rid NYC of smart educated people so he can win the election over and over. I don’t even know why he won.

  • B. Dunn

I thought that after Bloomberg and his anti democratic policies, the American public would wise up to dictatorial left wing politicians. Guess not…

  • john spielman

Now that’s inappropriate and stinks of anti semitism.

  • Iheartzooanimals

so are some of the carriage horse owners and drivers, so are some of the people who ride in them and so am I. So take your anti-Semitic garbage and go play in the traffic. This fight doesn’t need or want you.
