This past winter, my horses spent days at a time confined to their stalls because the outdoor conditions were too dangerous to put them out. The only colic I dealt with had nothing to do with being confined. My vet assured me there was nothing that could have detected or prevented it. When we did get the horses outside, they barely moved around because they were being careful about the footing. They were also more than happy to return to their stalls after being out for a short time. Feeding grain 2x/day is normal at the majority of stables. Eating hay 3-4x/day is sufficient to keep them busy for a few hours. Wild horses eat constantly because they never know when they will find food. Domestic horses don't have that issue and they can go for at least 4 hrs with no food intake.
Yes, horses roll in the dirt to help insulate them in the winter and dry off and protect against insects in the summer. The carriage horses don't need to do that, so keeping them clean doesn't harm them.
You're hilarious when you say the horses may appear happy, but they don't know any better. I can say the same thing about people who think they are happy, but are willfully ignorant about what is going on in Washington, DC. Don't disturb them. They think they are happy.
The rescue orgs would rather take in the neediest horses, not healthy, out of work carriage horses.

The majority of rescues are full and have waiting lists. Those spaces are needed for horses in desperate need. If they take in healthy carriage horses, they won't have room for the truly needy. These pictures show what type of horse really needs help.
The horse in the 2nd pic is covered in ticks.

You're right about the short lifespan of horses out in the prairie. We have horses at our place who are in their 30s and still healthy and fat. If they were out with the mustangs, they'd probably be dead. They have shelter and feed and get turned out and ridden if they're up to it. Palominogal and AAJPS are fairly ignorant.

What? I know something about horses, having been an instructor and rider for over 40 years, and I haven't yet heard from my horses whether they are happy or not. I wish people would stop putting human emotions into horses. Horses like having a job to do, generally. They don't like being overworked or overloaded, but these big draft horses pulling carriages are not being overworked. You state that the horses are fed, healthy and clean, so you don't think they're being abused, do you? You ignore the fact that a dictator like Di Blasio should not have the power to order dissolving of the jobs of the drivers and the horses so he can have his crony build something on the stable property. Nobody should have that power.

Good old-fashioned profit motive. Wonder who is putting the profit into the mayor's pocket for getting the horses out of the stables so the developer can build. Follow the money. Same way in every socialist regime -- those at the top engage in cronyism, manipulation of govt regulation to suit those in power, trampling on anybody lower than them on the ladder. Funny how those bureaucrats in the former Soviet Union had dachas and private cars and rode down a lane in the middle of thoroughfares cleared just for the politburo. Maybe Di Blasio will take advantage of the perks of being in charge to get some payoffs for himself. Of course, he doesn't care about the fate of the carriage horses after he destroys their jobs, nor does he care about the carriage drivers he puts out of work. No, like all totalitarians he lives to impose his will on others.

In every Constructed Fraud such as the Zecchino Estate Grift, pulled by Lifespan HMO and its greaszeball 'partners', and this 'kill the horses to profit from the stable lands' scheme, you need a Fall Guy.
The perfect Fall Guy is the target of your scheme, the one standing in the way of it. In this case, it's the carriage drivers. So, to get the lands they use for stables, you paint them as animal abusers and falsely accuse them of every heinous act imaginable, so that no one notices the tiresome collection of cronies and statists and collectivists who stand to reap windfalls by stealing the stable lands.
This is so old and it's worked so well until now, because the Net exposes these rats to our fellow citizens.
Next time, they need to bury the bones deeper than the fantastic reach and power of the Net to unearth and expose them. Best they bring their lunch.
Today, citizen reporters use the reach and power of the Net to expose cronyistic rats and the politicians who do their bidding, falsely claiming to save lives and 'help' when in fact their actions invariably destroy life and property.
Never in their wildest dreams did societies' many little cancers, termites, and spirochetes imagine something like the Net which would expose their dark designs.

Agree. It's simple: this is the genocidal face of communism in action. Communists are liars, subversives, and killers. They hate life, and first kill the animals, and then the families who love them.
That's what communists do, then they plunder what's left, and kill one another over it.
