Obama Overrides Congress to Buy $690 Million Worth of Russian Choppers for Afghan Air Force

Apparently America has too many jobs so Obama will be spending taxpayer money to support Russia’s defense industry on behalf of Afghanistan. And he’s doing so over the bipartisan objections of Congress from both the right and left and a ban on buying them written into the NDAA.

The US Department of Defense said Thursday it plans to sidestep a Congressional ban to purchase 30 helicopters from Russian state-owned defense firm Rosoboronexport, despite objections from US lawmakers who allege that the firm has equipped the Syrian government to commit brutal crimes against civilians.

The 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, approved by Congress last year, includes an amendment that prohibits financial contracts between the United States and Rosoboronexport, except when the Secretary of Defense determines that such arrangements are in the interest of national security.

The contract totals $690 million, most of which would go to the Russian arms maker, he added.

Aside from throwing almost $700 million to a company owned by the Russian government at a time when Obama has taken a chainsaw to the United States military, subsidizing the Russian defense industry helps it develop more weapons that will be sold to America’s enemies.

That money will help fund R&D for the next generation of weapons that an American military dismantled by Obama will be facing on the battlefield.

Rosoboronexport was originally under US sanctions for doing business with Iran until the ban was lifted. Rosoboronexport is still selling advanced weapons to Iran.

And oh yeah, this was a no bid contract.

The Pentagon didn’t solicit bids from any other company for the helicopters. That “seems just plain stupid,” says Texas Senator John Cornyn, one of nine Republican and eight Democratic senators pressing the U.S. Department of Defense to cancel the deal.

John Pike, director of national security think tank GlobalSecurity.org, says Russia sold Mi-17s to other countries during the Cold War, and that companies other than Rosoboronexport should have secondhand models that could be refurbished: “The notion that you can’t come up with a couple dozen of these puppies in the used helicopter market is hard to believe.”

Well why bother when Barack is willing to be so flexible for Vladimir.

A bipartisan Congressional group wrote a letter to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel last week in which they objected to the ongoing business relationship between the Russian arms company and the Pentagon. “What is the national security justification of continuing business with Rosoboronexport?” they asked in the letter. “Russia continues to transfer weapons through Rosoboronexport to the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria,” they continued. “Since the Syrian uprising began, Russia has continued to serve as the Assad regime’s chief supplier of weapons, enabling the mass murder of Syrian citizens at the hands of their own government.”

When you’ve got John Cormyn and Rosa DeLauro on the same side, that’s as close to a consensus that you can imagine.

Good lord, Barry's the biggest gun runner in the world today- Mexico,Libya,Syria,Egypt and now Afganistan?

  • Scott Armstrong

Why do we have a congress and senate ??

    • Jon Enigma

Good question; we don't. Congress is but a bunch of worms, IE. no balls or backbone. In essence nothing but very expensive fishing bait.

      • xman

they get a paycheck that is all that matters.

Unfortunately, they gave up all hope of relevance and real power when the agreed to the Super Committee.
True, they have been losing it for years but, it was at that point they just gave up responsibility for anything.
This applies to both sides of the aisle.

  • Tom Eaton

Don't fund the deal….. or better yet IMPEACH this arrogant good for nothing MUSLIM

    • ray1950

Does anyone actually expect a Democratic controlled U.S. Senate to impeach a Democrat? Do any of you who keep screaming "Impeach him" actually understand how the process works?

  • John Spielman

Are these the same type of copters that the Muslims shot out of the sky with US supplied hand held surface to air missiles?

    • Daniel Greenfield

Those were mainly MI-24s, but considering how the Mi-17s are being shot down in Syria, I don't imagine they'll hold up well.

    The new America White House ruling class;
The White House has made the congress and senate obsolete.
The congress & senate seems to be happy with it as long as the get all the perks.
Call, e-mailed your government Representatives (nonstop) to let them know that they will be out of a job if they don't back the people?
We will put common down to earth people in their place that will work as WE THE PEOPLE, the first thing WE THE PEOPLE will do is; take away all of their perks, then take away their armed security. see if congress & senate will change, and they may earn the capital C & S.
Right now they only back themselves and the people (legal & illegal), that live off of YOUR hard work because these people keep them in power.
Wake up before it is too late & let your voice be heard “put the
    pressure on them”.

    • kateyleigh

I have a great fear, it may already be too late.

      • OpenEyes

I fear this too. Its seems the government has reached a poitn where it is led by a few individuals, who lead an army of sheep, and can do whatever they wish to do, they will, with no fear of reprisal, or revolution from the sheep because they have been led too long. Those who are starting to see are labeled domestic terrorist, or conspiracy theorists. This begs the question though, when do the conspiracy theorists become the soothsayers?

    • Freddy P.

xman you are 100% right, the real tax paying people whose hard earned dollars fund all the perks and entitlements are now the moral minority. It is time to cut out the government pensions and free medical care that are bankrupting our country, government workers should have to contribute to their own IRA's or 401 K plans instead of the real taxpayers footing the bill. It's time for a change but I am afraid that we could not get one official elected who would consider this option. How nice would it be for us to retire at 55 with full benefits, and a pension that includes a cost of living increase.

      • Jeam

Careful there when referring to "government workers." All of my 41 years in Federal service I paid for my share of my insurance, my share of my retirement, at a higher rate than most of you, just like any other American tax payer… oh yes, I also paid my taxes. The "government workers" you are referring to are those on Capitol Hill. Please, let's make that distinction clear. This disgusts those of us who serve off "The Hill" also and we are just as sick of this Muslim/Communist as you are.

I cannot begin to express my revulsion with…I want Hussein impeached, the sooner this traitor is out of office, the better.

This country had it's chance to see that to fruition and dropped the ball over a bunch of free phones and the promise of yet another AMNESTY!

  • kateyleigh

I think we may need to understand, Obama has restructured government into something, for all intents and purposes, he alone runs. Congress is a figurehead giving the illusion thst we are a republic. In reality, it appears they are impotent.

  • spn221

Why is our Congress and Senate such cowards? Why would an American President buy weapons from the Russians to help Afghan Forces while America is in Afghanistan fighting a war? The only reason would be because he is a devil in disguise and not really an American on America's side!

    • Softly Bob

      You said it

And if we say anything on how he is a horrible president his sheeple call us racist.

The elephant in the room, and what begs the question here is simple, and NO ONE has mentioned it yet, although all posts are correct! WE HAVE PEOPLE OUT OF WORK Don't we have helocopter plants HERE? I mean HELLO!!! Why would we buy them from Russia , of ALL countries?!!!What am I missing here?

  • Jim Mc

This is outright Treason…Where are our reps ?

  • Jean Cooper

All of our representatives are cowards, they have either been bought off or blackmailed. We don't have but a handful of people in Washington fighting for Americans and our Constitution as it was written

  • Moliminous

During a sequestration? Override Congress? They would have to prove, prove mind you, that this is a matter of national defense. Where's the money coming from? The WhitHouse golfing budget? If the people said "No," and the Congress said, "No," and the leadership said, "No," where does King Obama come off saying, "Yes?"

This is willful, illegal, immoral. When will we hear the call for impeachment?

If he does this against the will of the people, who foolish and dangerous things will he do in North Korea?

This "man" is a threat to world peace, is a clear and present danger to America and needs to be taken out… of office.

  • daniel bosh

This is what obama whispered to putin

  • LScott

Sounds like he's asking to be impeached.

  • Michelle

This is all pre-planned and going exactly the way the powers that be want it to go. There is nothing anyone can, or for that matter, will do about it. Americans are so dumbed down and lazy and cowardice, that none will do a thing about it until it is too late. Then, when the damage is done, we will all spend the rest of our lives living in an existence that is as humble as that of 200 years ago. And on top of that, we will have a foreign power attempting to change forever the America that once was a GREAT nation.

  • Truth

Wow. You people need to read more. And not more of this drivel. First off, you realize that scores of Republicans were busted selling weapons to DRUG CARTELS in Mexico, right? Did you light up the internets then or claim it was a left wing conspiracy? Secondly, Bush and Cheney began positioning the Executive Branch to override all others more than a decade ago. If you think that Obama invented this, you must have been born yesterday. lol. Do you remember Reagan and HIS weapon scandal? Or was it ok to sell weapons to IRAN?!? No it wasn't but you all gave him a pass because he is a right wing guy, right? You are so incredibly blind to the truth. One of you asks if the Congressmen and women are all cowards and/or scared to do something. That's a question asked by a fool. Why? Because the answer is simple. They aren't scared at all. They are all party to it. There aren't sides in Congress any more though the politicians pretend there are and the media drums up as much divisive information as they can to maintain the party lines… but they don't exist. All politicians are on the same side in the end. Their own side and the side of those that pay them the most. That excludes everyone here. You are being used and lied to by both "sides" for their own personal gain. Until you see that, you will continue to be a rat in a maze chasing today's new cheese so that you never notice your captors include your own "side". Wake up idiots.

    • Name

I agree that the senate and congress do what the money ask them to do. However the President our supposed leader puts millions of dollars into the Russian economy and Helicopters in the hands of the Taliban I mean lets be real as to who will end up with them. What kick back is Mr. Obama going to get for helping the Russian economy and the Afgan Taliban Army. I would think that by building our own economy as well as military would be far more smarter than helping other countries. Mr Truth please enlighten me on your great knowledge as to why this is a great idea and why is it ok to do? I agree with you Reagan was a POS and we are dealing with the middle east now because of his great sale of arms. So why in the world would we as Americans accepts such recklessness again? Talk about blind to justify Obama's actions because others did it. I did not accept the others actions and sure as heck dont accept Obamas especially when our country is as broke as it is now. Not sure if you heard but we are under a sequestration and he is boosting another countries economy and military seems pretty easy to see, but I dont have those Obama blinders on.

    • jacklehr

You are the idiot. Selling weapons to Iran was done to facilitate arming the Contras in Nicaragua – you failed to mention that or The Boland amendments that essentially said Reagan was commander in chief, just not regarding the country of Nicaragua. Passed by a very left wing congress who apparently felt enemies of the U.S. are to be supported – kinda like the Obama administration, no? Bush/Cheney was a disaster – that much we can agree on. Obama is worse, though, because he acts against the interests of the U.S. on purpose while Bush did it out of stupidity – wrong man for the times.

    • FreeThinker

Right on, Truth, you nailed it. I totally agree. They are all in this together. If not, talk of impeachment would have already been circling in Congress and Senate. There is only one political party in our government. The "Pay Me Party". Money trumps all else: morals and values, political standings and views, dignity, religion, EVERYTHING!! They are all puppets to the highest bidder, especially Obama. And he is just a Token tool to the one's who pull the strings. We, the people, are in big trouble. Economic and social collapse are inevitable, and just down the road. I believe this is the reason for the FEMA controlled Fusion Centers.

  • juju

what I want to know ishow are our army, navy, airforce, and marines going to respond to being over seas, fighting, watching their friends die, then coming home to all this bullcrap,i don't think we will have long to see what will happen, when they all see what is going on with Obama, our soldiers will stand together and take him out of the whitehouse, kicking and screaming, and I pray they will clean out the congress and senate, while they're in there.he doesn't need to be impeached,he needs to be FIRED,grab your briefcase and get the hey' out of this state, out of our country.start from scratch, and let our armed forces deside what to do next.jesus, please help our nation.

The soviets took control of our gov. long ago. The fifth column runs our nation. It is no longer a gov. of by or for the people. Research "freedom from war". It's all you need to see that the tyranny is real, has been around for decades and we are in the last day's before they take complete control. Freedom from war is the state departments plan to disarm the worlds people and military as they grow the UN peacekeeping force. Our gov. wrote it for the UN to implement. With this loss of a US military we would transition to international law, as we see happening with the small arms treaty and the law of the sea treaty and UN Agenda 21. They also will implement a police state in every nation, which has been done under the guise of fighting the drug war. Watch the cops shows, swat teams, beligerant police, etc.. We are there.

It's tyranny, both party's. All we can do is prepare for the day when it becomes clear to all. Unfortunately I expect that this lie, that our nation is rebounding, unemployment down, stock market up, economy recovering, etc….will end in a great big event. They have to make up a different reason for the crash while they maintain this lie, this illusion that obama's governance was working. Lots of idiots will rally around obama as true American patriots, as the real patriots are demonized further.

So all you can do is educate others, and prepare wisely. God, guns n grub, guys n gals. The new 5G network.

    Come Lord Jesus.

Two hundred armored personell carriers given to Lebanon (Hamas(
Two hundred M 1 Abrahams to Egypt
    Twenty F 16 to Egypt
All the Libyan weaponry disbursed in the middle east
Now 700 million worth of heli's to afghan, while enriching Russia?

Google "freedom from war", research this piece, it's short and bitter. Critical thinkers need not ever see another document, this say's it all. Good bye sovereignty…….stock your pantry, an army runs on it's stomach. The same thing that happened to guns n ammo is about to happen to food, one event and the shelves will be empty, perhaps no restocking, given the just in time may never come.

I should mention, our gov. created the UN in 1945. Imagine that, some people don't think that China would ever get in a war with the US because they wouldn't want to lose our market. For them this is not an issue, their economy is dieing as ours is. They also will gain political power on the world scene, much greater than what they have now. If Korea attacks, you can bet Kim un will be somewhere deep in China, watching it from afar, as his actions bring down America. You can bet China will be involved if this attack comes. From early planning to response, to world war three. Stock your pantry, rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. Food is crucial……..no excuses, imagine these words haunting you the rest of your miserable existance as you get in line at a fema camp just because you are hungry……when one could have been wise.

When the U.S. gov't does not directly award weapons directly to our enemies they use the EX-IM Bank as a resource. Obama act borders on treason. The Congress is complicit they do little to curb his flaunting of a power grab.

We have COWARDS in the Senate and Congress! We have a Dictator as President who has betrayed America over and over and over and over! I Do Not Get It? Obama is intent on breaking the spirit of America and dealing with every natural enemy on behalf of the UN vs the Will of the American People. This is so wrong and no one is doing anything about it. Dogs with their tails tucked…so sad…

Romney was right – Russia remains our biggest thorn in Eastern Europe. Obama's scoffing only showed his sixties radical ignorance. Under Obama, the forces who hate freedom have gained strength and now it seems they feel that under the feckless leadership of the U.S., they are empowered to challenge us directly. We will be lucky to survive Obama.

This expenditure is wrong on so many levels. 1. The article was written in April 2013. Not a word in the national press that I can recall. There should have been a deafening outcry against this. 2. Where were the Unions? Don’t tell me that they are campaigning for Russian workers now while unemployment in the States is of minor interest to them! 3. Why is the military brass silent. These damn helicopters will end up in the hands of the Taliban for sure. American soldiers will be among their targets. 4. Was Congress asleep as well? No watch dogs anymore who keep an eye on what Hagel and the President are doing? A congressional letter to Hagel is the best they can do? That bum Hagel is in the pockets of our socialist administration. And what the hell made John Cornyn agree with DeLauro on this issue??? 5. Are we increasing our debt ceiling over and over again for this sort of crap? We are already neck-deep in debt as it is. The day will come when our great-grandchildren will think of us as supreme idiots. I hope they will understand that some of us are against these Democrats and RINOs. 6. And if anybody thinks that Hillary will change this mess, I will call them crazy right now. There are plenty of politicians who need to spend the rest of their lives in orange jumpsuits!
Remember the Alamo and remember Benghazi.
    …and Hillary? NEVER!

  • http://www.ul705.com John Stacey

This likely started from a kernel of truth and since greatly distorted as are most of these urban legends. Russian Mi-17 chopper probably cheapest bargain basement source to equip Afghan military and the only kind proven to withstand dusty conditions there. Remember Jimmy Carter’s failed attempt to rescue hostages when American-made choppers all self-destructed in sand-storm whipped up by their own rotors? Also Afghan pilots have been flying old Mi-17 choppers since 1980 and is all they know how to fly. They would likely never learn to fly complex new American choppers, crash them, a big waste of $ money and lives. Would also be insane to equip them with modern American choppers which could fall into wrong hands and be used against America. Who needs that? Keep Afghan air-force in the air to fight Taliban (formerly trained by CIA) with very cheap $ but effective (though obsolete) equipment makes sense to me. Though why America is even involved in any way spending one thin dime supporting Afghanistan beats me? (Except to ensure future access to some of the richest mineral deposits on the planet.) Also, America now pays Russia to fly all our astronauts to the ISP (at tiny fraction of $ cost of doing itself). So what’s so different here? Save $ money wherever you can and still get the job done. As said above, this probably started as truth but piled high with pure bullshit added by the usual internet nuts. This is more of just another “smear BO” campaign than a $ issue. (Not that he does not deserve it.) Have to look at these things in perspective, the big picture and in the light of common sense. That’s the way I see this, whether anyone else agrees or not.
