China would no longer have to support North Korea financially and militarily. They could also absorb defecting North Korean military and equipment back to mainland china to help them dominate the region.

On the other hand, they may use it as an excuse to oppose U.S. interests in the region further.

"If North Korea started a war and lost (as it surely would), how would that benefit China?"

Because no matter what happens, they will lie and call us the aggressor and position themselves as the victim. They'll continue to act more aggressively couching it in terms of "defense" or pushback against "colonialism." Facts don't matter much unless we actually move to win a war rather than make gestures with live ammunition (if that).

"South Korea would win even without US support. Where does that leave China, having backed those animals?"

That leaves China as the victim according to the Chinese regime. Always. Ever since the "peace movement" of the 1960s the communists have had a winning play book against the West in terms of propaganda. Short of all out war, we can't actually win in politic battles against them. Our citizens are collectively too stupid. And then there are our traitorous leaders that make it even easier these days.

Just pray China is not ready to expand too much before we get a decent president again.

Fortunately, in contrast to Iran, MAD still works with North Korea.
Or does it? Is Kim-Jong-un another Fidel Castro?

James Woolsey:

For example, we know now from Soviet documents that were released or stolen after the Cold War ended, that Castro pushed very hard during the Cuban missile crisis for essentially there be a nuclear war. Happily he did not care if Cuba would be destroyed. He wanted so much that the United States be destroyed, and he was not even a religious fanatic. He was just a fanatic sociopath. That almost tipped things into a tragic direction, but happily on the other side the Soviet Unionwas basically a bunch of thugs with a cover story their ideology was very substantially dead. By the early sixties there were more true believing revolutionary Marxist-Leninists in the bookstores of the Upper-West Side of Manhattan by that time, than I think there were in the Kremlin. Those guys did not want die for the principle of each according to his ability, to each according to his need – they wanted to remodel their dachas.

They were not, on the whole, sociopaths. Unfortunately, the Castro model, the Hitler model, the model of the sociopath is one we may well need to deal with in Iran.

We were, in a way, lucky with our opponent in the Cold War because they were thugs with a cover story. http://www.madisdead.blogspot.co.il/2012/04/threa...

It is no coincidence that Obama himself has said very little about North Korea. Obama I believe is open to the idea of North Korea firing a Nuke at the US West Coast. I believe secretly hopes for this to happen. It will speed up his plan to destroy the US and recreate it in a Trotskyite dream land.
