Obamacare Targets Catholic Hospitals to Strip Them of Tax-Exempt Status

We’re talking about non-profit hospitals, but a sizable percentage of them are religious hospitals affiliated with the Catholic Church, various Jewish and Protestant hospitals, formerly or currently representing some religious status.

Catholic hospitals make up some of the largest non-profits in the country. Indeed the top four systems in the country are Catholic.

Next on the list is Kaiser Permanente, which is non-religious and which Obama described as a model for Obamacare. Its CEO, George Halvorson, has met with Obama and his top people and pushed Obamacare.

Draw your own conclusions. In either case, the Obamacare non-profit clampdown will empower the IRS to effectively shut down non-profit hospitals.

Healthcare experts warn that the Obamacare’s new requirements make it almost impossible for charitable hospitals to navigate treacherous new waters.

“It requires tax-exempt hospitals to do a community needs survey and file additional paperwork with the IRS every three years. This is to prove that the charitable hospital is still needed in their geographical area — ‘needed’ as defined by Obamacare and overseen by IRS bureaucrats,” said John Kartch, spokesman for Americans for Tax Reform.

“Failure to comply, or to prove this continuing need, could result in the loss of the hospital’s tax-exempt status. The hospital would then become a for-profit venture, paying income tax — hence the positive revenue score” for the federal government, Kartch said.

Additionally, the rise in the number of insured Americans under Obamacare will make it more difficult for tax-exempt hospitals to continue meeting required thresholds for treating the uninsured, driving more hospitals into the for-profit category and yielding more taxable money for the federal government.

Obamacare’s new requirements could slam hospitals with massive $50,000 fines if they fail to meet bureaucrats’ standards.

As it will be for us all. This is Obama’s America after all. Charity was outlawed in the USSR. It will be outlawed in OSSR if things go that far.

What irony! Obama was abetted in becoming a “community organizer” by the Archdiocese of Chicago, then under the Liberation Theology Lite regime of Cardinal Bernardin, which paid his way to a community organizing training program given by the Alinsky-founded Industrial Areas Foundation in Los Angeles. (The indefatigable Phyllis Schlafly managed to obtain copies of the travel documents from the Archdiocesan archives.) It just goes to show the truth of the proverb, “When you sup with the devil, you had better use a long spoon.”

That nitwit Carol Keehan will consort with her socialist comrades at the USCCB in a further attempt to put lipstick on the pig known as Soetorocare.

  • Veracious_one

Obamacare is just what some critics have claimed…it’s a tax….

  • Joel_18

Non-profit hospitals won’t pay tax, because they won’t be profitable. It won’t add a penny to the treasury. It will merely take away one more way that religion can serve the community. So it’s one win for the Pres, but not two.

    • Veracious_one

Obamacare will force hospitals to close..

  • Independent Tom

Liberals are terrorists. They advocate murder just to advance a political agenda.

  • TheOrdinaryMan

Not only will Catholic hospitals be forced to raise their rates; but according to the Heritage Foundation, doctor-owned hospitals won’t be able to expand, under Obamacare. There are so many stifling regulations in H.R. 3590, that doctor-owned hospitals won’t be able to expand, thus won’t be able to hire new workers, or offer any but the most basic services to the community. How is THAT supposed to help?

  • TangoTommy

There are about 1000 health care facilities of all types operated by the Catholic Church. They take care of about 92,000,000 people. That’s right, 92 million. I have suggested that the Church inform Congress that unless Congress repeals Obamacare in it’s entirety, the Church will close ALL these facilities. Lock them up tight. It would be interesting to see what the 92,000,000 would do. Duck!!!

    • gorgegirl

      Fine with me.

  • Anon

These hospitals should start cutting costs by looking at their employees. It won’t be hard to find $50,000 to pay the fine. Doctors and medical staff in the USA are some of the highest paid in the world. Would be nice to see salaries cut by 50% , it would go a long way to making things truly affordable. As it is now, we are obligated by law to buy health care, so “we the people” will be paying for their lavish lifestyles. With the mandate, doctors are becoming de facto public servants, so their remuneration should be curtailed and every health care dollar dearly spent. The free market days need to end!

    • gorgegirl

Our community had a nice hospital that was taken over by Providence. They did a $27 million remodeling and additions to it – but left the patients beds at only 12. You go into the hospital for blood test or x-ray, you actually go to 3 different people before you get to the x-ray tech. Of course, someone has to pay those people so, it cost me over $600 for the emergency room visit when I broke my leg and that didn’t include the cost of the x-rays, doctor or anything else. Then, when I got my bill it showed they took a urine test and also had to pay someone to “read” the urine test. As I told them, I didn’t urinate while I was there so why are they charging me for the test. They said I was wrong and they stood by their charges. I don’t know about you, but I know when I take a pee in a cup.
So, that is how they make their money. They charge for services they don’t provide.

LOL. Memo to Anon…the glory days of doctoring are long gone. And BTW Anon, know how much it costs to go to med school and how many years it took me to pay off the debt to work 80 hours a week to serve you. Mind you I chose this profession and am called to serve you but I think you might want the person who is holding your life in their hands reasonably compensated. Don’t know how many lives A-Rod, Justin Beiber or George Clooney has saved but doctors don’t even dream of that kind of money. If you really want what you describe, check out England and the NHS. They can’t train doctors there anymore. The answer…fly in locum tenens docs…from Southwest Asia. Our healthcare system is the best in the world and could be better, but will die if the progressives like Anon have their way. See you in the ER Anon.

      • Anon

The way around that is to have free medical school with a contract to work for the govt for 8 years after graduation. Like they do at the service academies.

    • Drakken

Welcome to socialist medicine, it doesn’t work, period, but I guess in your comi worldview all things are equal.

So let the Catholic hospitals close and that way only the minority parasites will die, win, win situation…..

    • objectivefactsmatter

Mortality rates will go up across the board, mostly in the lower and lower middle economic “classes.”

        Who cares about the parasites…?

        • objectivefactsmatter

I care about creating parasites in the first place. I’m against it.

And I guess I wasn’t clear in my position that others will be affected. Certainly those working people who have their premium rates go up, and then find they are not covered, will end up living less-productive lives that end sooner relative to what they would have managed without 0’Bamacare.

  • w00nda_63

what ever happened to grandfather laws? they can come in and change all the rules and make entities comply…When you had something up and running and there is no provision for them it is complying or go for profit or shutting down! Well I would close my doors and if enough of them do it what then?

  • Navy Doc

Everyone needs to understand there are two conspirators in promulgating the disaster that is Obamacare. First is government, in DC and at the state level. Multiple states, including states with GOP governors like AZ and OH, have elected to take the Obama Candy to salvage poorly run Medicaid programs laden with state determined healthcare mandates vice fight for real free market reform of healthcare in their states. Second…not insurance companies…it’s hospital systems! This includes some so-called non-profits that bank money away, like Planned Parenthood, in a variety of Foundations, affiliated organizations and exempt tax structures. Anyone who wants to understand the treachery at work here between Democrats, Obama, hospital systems and the partners of hospital systems, unions like SEIU, needs to read Avik Roy’s piece at https://www.nationalreview.com/nrd/articles/353802/arm-and-leg

  • http://www.politicalbase.com/profile/jnail/blog/ JJNSTANG

So every three years, filing some paperwork to keep your tax free status is onerous? PLEASE… Enough BS.

  • http://www.politicalbase.com/profile/jnail/blog/ JJNSTANG

Selective quoting and misleading headlines. Here is the preceding paragraph and why this law is being out in place.

“A new provision in Section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code, which takes effect under Obamacare, sets new standards of review and installs new financial penalties for tax-exempt charitable hospitals, which devote a minimum amount of their expenses to treat uninsured poor people.”

In other words if non profits are NOT serving a community in need effectively then they should not be non profit and ripping off the rest of us….DUH!

    • Drakken

Here we are folks, lib logic at its finest. Our new and improved re-education camps they used to call schools and churning out drones like the nitwit above like some much confetti. No wonder why Obummer and folks like him win elections.

  • Crazycatkid

Begrudging doctors, who train at high expense until they are nearly middle aged, for their compensation is an easy out and a typical ignorant Marxist perspective. First of all, not all are actually paid well. Secondly nurses and other assistants are now making exceptional money.
Before speaking, it is important to check facts.
Soon all your medical care will be offered by people with less education, training and skills. They will be paid well. But you may not get well.

  • kmbog

Oh the irony of it all. If you look at the politics of a number Catholic charities they are very liberal in their beliefs and have supported BO to a large extent.

    • William James Ward

Liberalism is a cancer put out by the corrupted educational
system in America, government schools send out their activists
into every corner of society, the Catholic Church included.
Communism and Catholicism are strange bedfellows, I can not
for the life of me see how the Church expects to prepare the
faithful for the return of Christ while in bed with His enemies.
Biblical authority has been sublimated for worldly ambitions
and the destruction of so many by the use of religion to
control rather than liberate man in the way to restoration,
redemption and salvation by the Gospel message…..William

When evil is accepted as good, everyone loses. Chicago once a good town, over the years, accepted Al Capone, Saul Alinksky, Cardinal Bernadine, Mayor Daily, Barack Obama. What has been the fruit of this town towards improving the United States of American. The answer – NOT A DAMN THING!

Every time this particular Chicagoan opens his pie hole, you know that its not going to be a benefit to anyone. He is fruitless, anti-Catholic, anti-American, Pro-abortion, Pro-gay, Pro-Muslim war mongering loser, etc. Just what good does this man do for we Americans? It’s like having England’s (miserable) King John with his Nottingham Sheriff (DOJ) Eric Holder, neither Obama nor his sheriff does any good for the citizens of this country. Its time for a change. Chicago needs to change its way Get rid of Rahm Emmanuel as well.

This is intended to move the USA to a single provider and single payer system.

Well, I just got the bill from the Catholic run non-profit for my son, that was in for 5 days following surgery for a ruptured appendix.

    $22,xxx for 5 and a half days. Hospital bill only….about $3600/day.

$450 for ER doctor….about 5 minutes of his attention.

    $2K surgeon bill

    $2K anesthesia

There’s a LOT of profit in the $22K bill!!!!!!
