Pressure Cookers are the New Assault Rifles

This entire sad story is a sign of the Swedenization of America as companies and organizations engage in hysterical attempts to avoid offending anyone and everyone out of fear of falling victim to the grind of the outrage machine.
Yesterday, “Rights Views” reported that the home-goods retailer, Williams-Sonoma pulled pressure cookers from shelves in some of their stores “out of respect” for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.
It’s crazy enough when guns get this kind of treatment, but even crazier when pressure cookers do. If the Muslim terrorists had used a car bomb, would we be clearing away cars everywhere out of respect for the victims?
This is what happens in a feeling culture when the emphasis is not on doing the right thing or the sensible thing, but on feelings. Feelings are not rational and neither is pulling pressure cookers off the shelf.
But don’t worry, if you aren’t happy with what Williams-Sonoma did, they will apologize for that too.
In response to this report Pat Connolly, a Williams-Sonoma spokesperson, provided “Right Views” a statement regarding the decision, including an apology to anyone who was offended:
“Pressure cookers are available at all our stores nationwide.
“In the days immediately following the tragic bombings in Boston a local decision was made to remove pressure cookers from the sales floor of the stores near where the bombing occurred. We apologize if we offended anyone by this action.”
Why would anyone be offended? What is Williams-Sonoma even apologizing for? They did something senseless out of fear of offending anyone. Then they’re apologizing for the senseless thing even though no one could possibly be offended.
Is there a National Pressure Cookers Association? Cooks who are offended at being lumped in with terrorists?
It’s a silly story, but it’s a symptom of something more serious. We’re becoming an irrational culture whose organizations are responsive to emotions, not facts, and are forever afraid of being dubbed insensitive.
The hysteria over gun control is a result of emotional manipulation. That hysteria has already penalized countless schoolchildren targeted for having the wrong shirt, the wrong keychain or a pop tart chewed into the shape of a gun.
Next up, pressure cookers. And after that? Anything and everything at all.
