State of the Pump: Gallon of Gas Up 96% Under Obama

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

Taxes need to keep being raised to fund infrastructure projects like highways and bridges for the people who can no longer afford to drive over them.

It’s the way things are in the Obanomy.

The average price of a gallon of gas has increased 96 percent since President Barack Obama first took office in 2009, according to figures from the Energy Information Agency (EIA).

According to EIA data, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the United States was $1.838 on Jan. 19, 2009–the day before Obama took office. As of Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, the per-gallon price had risen to an average of $3.611–an increase of 96 percent.

The $3.677 is not the highest gas prices have been under President Obama. That record was reached the week of May 9, 2011 when they averaged $3.965 per gallon.

As Obama said, Romney might have been able to bring down gas prices, but the economy would be a mess. Instead gas prices are high and the economy is still a mess.

  • Mary Sue

what are they doing that makes the gas that expensive?! I know how it gets that expensive in Canada; it's called gas tax.

    • EarlyBird

Facts: the world has seen a raise in gas prices throughout the 2000s and especilly since 2009, because China's consumption has exploded, increasing by nearly two thirds since Obama took office.

From the EIA itself: "China's oil consumption growth accounted for half of the world's oil consumption growth in 2011."

Fact: Under Obama's watch there has been a boom in natural gas production and consumption in the US and his stricter CAFE standards (the ones that Greenfield mocks) are leading us to further decrease oil usage. That not only makes for cleaner environment, less dependency on Arabs but also lowers demand and keeps this world commodity lower.

      • Mary Sue

        Natural Gas =/= Gasoline, birdbrain.

        • EarlyBird

Idiot, natural gas is replacing gasoline in many vehicles and other applications. I can't do your thinking for you.

          • Patrick Brown

This is horse hockey…. what percentage of the cars on the road use natural gas? Perhaps 0.01%? or more likely 0.001%. The Real American workers get to work using gasoline and diesel to power their cars and pickups. The trucks that deliver the goods and services to Americans use……. wait for it…….. gasoline and diesel! Natural gas cars are a pipe dream at best. You need to learn to think for yourself and not let the far left wingnuts obamanites do your thinking for you! Patrick (a real 11th generation American)

          • EarlyBird

A lot of mass transit and construction vehicles do, Patrick. And a lot of homes are fueled with it too. I mean, they're not just extracting natural gas to throw it away, right? Oh, and I forgot to mention that even our crude oil production is way up under Obama, the supposed anti-energy communist Taliban operative, or whatever psychosis has gripped this page today.

          • objectivefactsmatter

"Idiot, natural gas is replacing gasoline in many vehicles and other applications. I can't do your thinking for you."

Yeah, come on. We're practically all converted to natural gas vehicles already. We must be approaching 90% of American vehicles now use natural gas or solar or some smelly stuff from the Arabian peninsula that they swear is actually natural gas.

          • EarlyBird

So just to recap, in your world, all of the natural gas that has been extracted, an historic boom period, isnt' being used at all. The companies are going to all that trouble and expense to throw the gas away.

            Okay….

          • Mary Sue

Dude, natural gas is NOT a good replacement for gasoline. It's not as concentrated a fuel and you won't be able to go as far on a tank.

I should know, I used to own a vehicle that ran on propane.

          • Rand

I live near 0bama's home town. I could buy a CNG Honda Civic GX, but the only place in the metro area to fill it is twenty five miles away. One facility for the entire metropolitan area.

Having a few simple ideals is all anyone needs to be president. Especially when fanboy voters are so simple-minded while claiming everyone else just doesn't get how complex the world is.

Bird brain strikes again. Ya see, it's the radical right-wing murdering Christians and Jews who are holding everyone back from this great transformed America where all cultures are welcomed, especially if you have really really sensitive religious feelings and are willing to spend all of your time and money begging to be treated as supreme creatures while raping and murdering your female members as well as non-members or non-compliant members or petty criminals or politically inconvenient members or…etc.

We need more of that, and more centrally planned "stimulus" where big donors get their chance to try out "capitalism" funded by taxpayer money. Why that's ok. That's like having water blessed by the pope. We can't have private citizens engaging in capitalism because that's evil.

Coo coo bird has it all worked out. We just have to sit at his feet and hope to understand it all some day. Or just trust him and the great Sunni Muslim leader and his transformation. You'll love it.

Re: a boom in natural gas production and higher CAFE standards.

What is your opinion on "fracking"?

What is your opinion on 15% ethanol in gasoline?

        • EarlyBird

"What is your opinion on "fracking"?"

I think it's a necessary evil. Everything we do will have some negative impact on the environment. But there are enough upsides to CNG that we should continue to frack, but also find ways to make it safer. The worries about pollution of water are well founded. It could be done better most likely.

"What is your opinion on 15% ethanol in gasoline?"

It takes a LOT of arable land to produce a small amount of it. It may have a place in the general scheme of things. However, I'd like the US to stop subsidizing it like we've done since the Carter admin, unless it's put into a proper national energy strategy.

    • patron

Weak dollar due to inflationary policies drive it. Also insane fuel standards like mandatory ethanol and biofuel blends which do not exist. This causes refineries and pipelines to adjust their equipment. Cap and trade hanging over the energy industry does not help at all.

New standards may lower consumption and lower prices in the short term, but there is a trade off as infrastructure needs to be implemented and total energy used may actually go up for parts requiring more precision as well as the waste in new manufacturing processes.

The growth from China will not account for increasing consumer prices 4 times, especially considering energy supplies have improved. Gold has skyrocketed much faster. Silver even more. Wheat and industrial chemicals are through the roof. It's the weak dollar compared to commodities which is sapping American buying power, due to the double harm of Obama's power drunken liberal government binge and his gaia inspired regulatory fascism preventing any domestic commodity recovery or processing.

Pretty soon that commodity bubble will burst, and American will then have $10/bbl oil to sell instead of $100/bbl

  • SuicidePrevention

US gasoline prices peaked in the summer of 2008
just at over $4/gallon. By the time Obama was sworn in 6 months later the financial crisis was at its
worst, demand dried up, and gasoline dropped to under $2/gallon. http://gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx
Stock market averages followed roughly the same trajectory. Prices for many things, including
financial assets, followed roughly the same trajectory.
Daniel, since you apparently have no qualms about cherry picking data to make your case,
you might be able to get a job on Wall Street.

    • EarlyBird

With malice of forethought, Danny Greenfield refuses to point out that China's demand for oil has exploded, thereby raising the price of that true global commodity.

Listen: Greenfield is a lying propagandist. If Obama cured cancer, Greenfield would blame him for overpopulation. He's a little creep.

      • Mary Sue

Um, that's BS and I'll tell you why.

Canada's gas prices have been significantly higher than USA's for a long time, and our prices do not jump nearly as fast as high.

        • EarlyBird

The main jump worldwide has been due Chinese consumption. Period. There may be other reasons specific to Canada and the US, but to omit THE primary fact further proves Greenfield is a liar.

          • objectivefactsmatter

"The main jump worldwide has been due Chinese consumption."

Your such a tool because Chinese oil consumption is a significant factor in driving our prices up due to loss of American hegemony. Chinese energy demand has been consistently rising. Trying to get along with China to keep focus on the war on terror means allowing China to do what it wants.

Leftists ruin everything by challenging every effort to maintain American hegemony and security. But that is truly too complex for you to understand so you pull statements out of context as if you're the only one that knows what China is doing. China is a huge proponent of "green energy" and yet their agenda is entirely different than ours. They use every source of energy they can while also using propaganda to get leftists to advocate stupid self-destructive positions. Like 0'Bama has.

It's true that gas prices were higher under Bush and started to decline. Bush had 2 wars to deal with, and leftists fighting him the whole time. Who is actually opposing 0'Bama's agendas? The media treats him like a savior and criticism is shouted down as racism.

You're a liar. You don't even know what conservatism is or what is hopes to conserve. You're simply not as radical as a few of the most extreme leftists. That does not make you a conservative.

I'm calling you a liar straight up.

"The main jump worldwide has been due Chinese consumption. Period. There may be other reasons specific to Canada and the US, but to omit THE primary fact further proves Greenfield is a liar."

Doesn't. You're a fool. There is no single factor. Bush should have done more, but had to deal with leftists while killing jihadis. 0'Bama's policies have zero chance of success. We're winding down the war and kissing buttocks of all the Islamic regimes. That's supposed to make all of this better. Has it? Not even close. What do we get in exchange for risking American hegemony and security? Nothing any true American would want.

            Loser.

          • EarlyBird

So, in other words, you AGREE with me that the reason for a huge worldwide spike in oil prices is due to the giant increase in Chinese demand. Thank you.

And the only reason China is a rising giant is because Bush couldn't maintain global US hegemony (The American Duty!) because had to deal with jihadists. Because, see, China was just a backwoods swamp until the Bush years, then oila! it came out of nowhere. Who coulda seen THAT coming?

Then you go on, as usual, to make excuses for Bush's failures "the left!" and then ramble on about Obama a jihadist Muslim Marxist…

You're just getting weirder and funnier.

          • objectivefactsmatter

"So, in other words, you AGREE with me that the reason for a huge worldwide spike in oil prices is due to the giant increase in Chinese demand. "

Wow. You're dense. You called the author a liar and said, "The main jump worldwide has been due Chinese consumption. Period."

Which is false. You simply can't read. China gets more oil more cheaply than us. We pay more than we did before. See the problem?

"There may be other reasons specific to Canada and the US, but to omit THE primary fact further proves Greenfield is a liar."

It's not a primary fact. It's a residual effect of our bad energy policies led by your idol and savior. Which leads to the fact that you are no conservative at all. That makes you a liar. All you do is attack conservative positions by reading in between the lines and amplifying the importance of your own assertions. You then use this to attack people in conversations that are simply over your head.

"Then you go on, as usual, to make excuses for Bush's failures "the left!" and then ramble on about Obama a jihadist Muslim Marxist…"

No need. Everyone but you is already clear on the facts of the matters you mention.

      • SuicidePrevention

China's increased oil consumption is partly the flip-side of the drop in US oil consumption. US companies could make stuff cheaper in China so they moved production there. Production requires oil (atleast to move stuff) and other fossil fuels for electricity and chemical feedstocks.
Also, as China gets richer it can afford more of everything including fossil fuels.

        • objectivefactsmatter

"China's increased oil consumption is partly the flip-side of the drop in US oil consumption. US companies could make stuff cheaper in China so they moved production there. Production requires oil (atleast to move stuff) and other fossil fuels for electricity and chemical feedstocks.
Also, as China gets richer it can afford more of everything including fossil fuels."

It's a lot more complex than that, and I'm sure you know that too but let's just ask who gains the most from green energy initiatives in the West, us or China? What do we get in exchange for all of these silly policies of Islamic appeasement (oil regimes) and green energy investment policies that even if successful would not justify such radical changes in fossil fuel policies?

It's not our future that it secures, it's China's. So even if all of this green energy is truly needed for the sake of "mother nature" shouldn't we ensure that we're the survivors if we're the only ones who will actually make sure the globe remains clean? We kill ourselves getting "green" so that others can kill or control us and then pollute at will?

          It's very stupid.

Since Greenfield makes a living out of being dishonest, he's not going to address the real reason why the cost of gas has gone up around the world in the past four years – in a word, "China" – or let you know anything which Obama has done to ameliorate it (US natural gas production and US mileage standards).

Let's analyze Greenfield's paint by numbers propanda formula, okay?

1.) Big Scary Meaningless Headline Linking Obama to Something BAD

2.) A embarrassing picture of Obama (actually a picture of ANOTHER piece of propaganda from the "American Principles Super PAC" an organization just as obsessed with Obama as the Front Page insane asylum).

    3.) A snarky opening sentence.

4.) Followed by a context-free quote making Obama look bad.

    5.) Followed by more snark.

    • Mary Sue

That doesn't explain why Canada's gas hasn't risen the same proportion as USA's gas price.

      • SuicidePrevention

I think that since Canadian gasoline taxes are higher than US gasoline taxes, Canadian pump
prices never got as low as US prices. Since the bottom price in early 2009 was higher in Canada,
the proportional increase was smaller. Eg. Going from 3 to 5 is a 67% increase while going from
2 to 4 is a 100% increase. Also, Alberta now has a glut of unrefined high viscosity, high
sulfer crude oil. They are making gobs of the stuff from oil sands, but didn't arrange in advance for enough pipeline capacity, and they didn't figure on expanding Bakken tight oil production, which may have stolen some of their market share. Maybe some of that cheap heavy oil gets refined in Alberta and makes for relatively cheap gasoline.

      • EarlyBird

"That doesn't explain why Canada's gas hasn't risen the same proportion as USA's gas price."

Well, because Canada's prime minister doesn't pray to Satan every night before reciting from the Koran and sacrificing Republican Jewish babies like our president does.

Commodities which are recoverable like steel or have no industrial uses like gold have gone up greatly. Food prices has increased.

Problem is our buying power. Bernanke's $3 trillion balance sheet because of Barney Frank's boyfriends at Fannie Mae, and Obama's $1 trillion a year deficit because he's apathetic to entitlement fraud or union gangsters destroyed our buying power.

New technology which could open up a lot of domestic oil exists. It has lowered natural gas costs to next to nothing. Obama's EPA blames it for creating earthquakes and poisoning drinking water.

Of course give Obama a pardon for the banking crisis. It's not like he ever sued banks to lower lending standards, advocated for the community reinvestment act, went along with his fellow Democrats saying nothing was wrong with US housing, or signed the bill written by the two criminals who originated the maelstrom into law.
