Taliban Hit US Mission in Afghanistan with Truck Bomb, RPGs, Bomb Vests

Smoke rises from the US consulate in Herat after the attack.

The timing was close enough to 9/11 to make the point. No Americans have been killed in this attack, like most attacks on well fortified diplomatic missions and embassies, only local security were killed.

That’s why Benghazi was so unusual. Had it been properly protected, the only casualties would have been local security. Instead Hillary nickel and dimed the security away while blowing millions on Green Energy, Kindles and Art in Embassies.

The violence started at around 5:30 a.m. (9 p.m. ET) when a truck drove to the consulate’s front gate, American officials said.
“The attackers — possibly firing rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles — commenced attacking Afghan protective forces on the exterior of the gates and contracted security guards,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said in a statement. “Shortly after, the entire truck exploded, extensively damaging the front gate.”

It “appears some attackers were wearing suicide explosive devices,” she added.

The attack is yet another reminder that the Taliban are not about to let Obama retreat from Afghanistan without claiming credit for chasing him out.

One interesting angle is the location. Herat. It’s close to Iran, partly dominated by Iran and it hasn’t seen that much violence. September 7 saw a protest turn into an attack on the Iranian consulate in Herat.

And occasionally there have been questions about whether some Herat attacks were really the work of the Taliban… or of Iran.

Afghan Journalist Centre writes that the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Yaghobi has told The Diplomat that the “modus operandi used by the attackers is not employed by the Taliban, but is the handiwork of Iranian intelligence active in Herat through fundamentalist Shia groups.” His claim was supported by local intelligence officials, who demanded anonymity. Yaghobi says that past attacks on creative people and journalists have been carried out by these local groups.

“It’s very suffocating the way Iran controls your life in Herat,” says Yaghobi.

A major Taliban attack could conceivably happen anywhere. But a major attack in Herat… coinciding with Obama’s muddled push for war in Syria could very well be Iran’s local proxies sending a message.

Iran’s involvement with Afghanistan Muslim terrorists is well known….it would not be a surprise to learn that the attackers actually came from Iran….US forces long ago found road mines and weapons that came from Iran….
