Greenfield would do well to read Isaiah Berlin's ideas on negative and positive freedoms, and to reconsider his own apparent definition of "freedom" as merely "the absence of government," i.e., the less government the more free a person.

By Greenfield's standard, people living in places like the slums of Rio, where no policeman or tax collector ever ventures, are perfectly "free," while the businessman in the city center who relies on government-collectivist projects like highways, shipping ports, electrical grids, and a regulated market to conduct his independent business, is the one living a bleak existence in a Soviet-style gulag.
Sure, the slum dweller is free - but free to do what? To try to scrape out a miserable living while defending himself from maurading gangs, that's what.

BOTH individualism and collectivism are needed, for real freedom, creativity and people to thrive. Wanna know why California was considered the "Golden State" in its heyday, and was the birthplace of some of the most creative and prosperous citizens in the union? It had a lot to do with that horrid, oppressive government making a world class state college education available to everyone, and things like environmental protection laws.
We have gone so far to the right since Reagan, have so reflexively come to believe that less government is always the answer, that we've fallen behind in so many ways. While we have divested dramatically fro government projects and protections, our upward mobility, once the hall mark of America, has slide far below those "socialist" states like Denmark, Sweden, France, Canada and others.
Extreme collectivism ends in the tyranny of the state, while extreme individualism ends in the tyranny of Hobbesian hell. We need to get back to balance.
