In one of the stranger propaganda stunts to date, Time Warner Cable has announced a ban on ads with guns in them.
“We no longer accept ads showing semiautomatic weapons and guns pointed at people,” Time Warner Cable said in a statement. “We stand by this policy. If it’s essential to a business owner to show this kind of imagery in their commercials, there are other advertising options in the marketplace.”
This is really strange because Time Warner Cable is a subsidiary of Time Warner of which one subsidiary is Warner Brothers. Warner’s recent movies include the gun heavy Gangster Squad whose trailer includes multiple examples of guns being fired and pointed at people. Then there’s upcoming gun safe zone movies like “Bullet to the Head” and “All You Need is Kill”.
This gets even stranger when you consider that Warner’s cable shows from Warner Horizon include cop shows like Rizzoli & Isles and Longmire.
So TWC is barring ads with guns in them in the middle of shows that it runs and that its Warners family produces that have guns in them. This isn’t just hypocritical, it’s nuts.
Longmire can feature a character pointing a gun at someone. But, if TWC follows its insane policy, then an ad for Longmire in which a character points a gun at someone, cannot run in the commercial break for that very show.
Not only does Warners produce violent cable shows full of guns, but it also has a whole bunch of cable channels, including HBO, TNT, Cinemax and TBS.
This is Strike Back which features a lot of guns being pointed at people. This is its trailer which probably has more guns pointed and fired at people than you could encounter by spending a year in Chicago.
It airs on a Warners channel, but it can no longer be advertised on Time Warner Cable demonstrating how senseless this policy really is.
