When Facebook bigwig Mark Zuckerberg set up FWD.us to push through amnesty, his subgroup Americans for a Conservative Direction, chronicled on Discover the Networks, was controversial among liberals because it ran ads praising pro-amnesty Republicans for taking supposedly conservative positions on ObamaCare or drilling for oil.
It was a clever and cynical tactic. And plenty of libs were not on board.
Now Elon Musk, one of Obama’s big crony capitalist cronies, has decided to drop out. Elon Musk cashed in on Tesla, an electric car company, which got $465 million from Obama, and on SpaceX, which got an even bigger benefit when Obama trashed NASA so SpaceX could, in theory, get the business.
Apparently that debt is big enough that Elon Musk is now trashing FWD.us.
“I agreed to support Fwd.us because there is a genuine need to reform immigration. However, this should not be done at the expense of other important causes,” Musk told AllThingsD. “I have spent a lot of time fighting far larger lobbying organizations in D.C. and believe that the right way to win on a cause is to argue the merits of that cause. This statement may surprise some people, but my experience is that most (not all) politicians and their staffs want to do the right thing and eventually do.”
The tactics of FWD.us have led to environmentalists and others protesting online and even in front of Facebook’s California headquarters. On Tuesday, a coalition of liberal groups — including MoveOn.org, the Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters and Progressives United — said it was suspending paid advertising on Facebook for at least two weeks.
This is the same old battle between the pragmatic left and the dogmatic left. The dogmatic left is unwilling to compromise, even strategically, for a long term win. The pragmatic left will take its victories one bite at a time.
Elon Musk has the license to align with the dogmatic left because he’s swimming in a giant pond of government dough and unlike Zuckerberg, who does have an actual company to run, Tesla and SpaceX can get by on wishful thinking.
Zuckerberg has an agenda, but he also has a real company, Musk is just a crony capitalist who never needs to compromise as long as Democrats hold the White House.
