What Obama Compelling Israel to Apologize to Turkey has Accomplished

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

By forcing Netanyahu to apologize for an aggressive by an Islamist state, Obama has “accomplished” a number of things…

1. Obama legitimized Turkey’s Ottoman Empire aspirations. The compromise embeds Turkey into Gaza, which puts the former empire into Israel’s back yard and usurps even Egypt.

The terrible White House foreign policy has already ceded sections of the world to international aggressors. This latest move allows a dangerous Islamist regime to step into the power vacuum created by the United States with the endorsement of the White House.

2. It gives Hamas a major victory by lowering restrictions on it and rewarding its Islamist ally’s intervention on its behalf. Obama has not only rewarded a state sponsor of terror, but forced Israel to acknowledge Turkey’s right to sponsor and support Hamas.

3. Obama has further destabilized the Middle East by rewarding Hamas and inflating an already swollen Turkish ego which encourages its support for terrorists in Syria and beyond.

Turkey faced no criticism from the White House for its continuing occupation and settlement of Cyprus, its threats of ethnic cleansing aimed at Christian Armenians or its support for terrorists in Syria.

The message is that Turkey can do what it likes with the support of Obama Inc.

4. Obama undermined Israel’s right to protect itself from Hamas incursions and will encourage copycat operations from Turkey. The raid on the Mavi Marmara established the principle that Israel has the right to protect itself from incursions intended to support Hamas. Obama has forced Netanyahu to reverse that position.

Israel apologized (mere words) and agreed to compensate relatives of the Mavi Marmara volunteers who died in their war against Israel (a trivial bribe). In return, Israel reestablished diplomatic relations with Turkey, a great triumph for Israel. The anti-Israel member of the Knesset, Zoabi, was horrified to the depths of her being. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/

Diplomatic relations aren't being reestablished yet according to Erdogan

furthermore these relations are meaningless as Turkey is run by Islamists at war with Israel who will break relations again and make more demands

      • megapotamus

Yes, any soothing words coming from Turkey, and i haven't really heard any, are as worthwhile as the blandishments of Yasir Arafat. The Islamist only uses diplomacy to further the aims of Jihad. That's not to say Bibi's calculation may not be the one expressed above.

      • JacksonPearson

        "furthermore these relations are meaningless"
        Exactly:
Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan concisely portrays the inherently warlike agenda of mosques by quoting a renowned Islamic poet: “The minarets are our bayonets, the domes our helmets, the mosques our barracks, and the faithful our army.”

      • Ar'nun

Netanyahu should know better. I know as a retired US soldier that I would have trouble following a leader who apologized for his soldiers doing the right thing. Especially if one died in the prosess. Bibi might as well give the rest of Israel to the Islamists after this. What an f'in coward.

The issue involves Obama's moronic diplomacy. How does this work to America's interest whatsoever? It's a decision made for political advantage in response to falling job approval.

"We condemn the assassination of Osama bin Laden" -Hamas

Who in their right mind thinks the problem is Israel's lack of apologizes? In the context of Obama's past history of calling the settlements criminal and undermining an Israeli response to Iran with leaks, he keeps this up, he'll launch a third infitada himself by emboldening the terrorists.

Groveling by Israel is ALWAYS a "precondition" to everything, even if the results amount to nothing but a hill of bills. Here's the thing – the Islamist-in-Chief understands that Islam requires submission, Islam literally means to submit! – by hammering Netanyahu for an "apology" (for allowing the soldiers to save themselves!), what he has done is placed Turkey "above" Israel, and that was the entire exercise. Mind you, it won't change a thing re the real issue, that of, security. As to trade, trade is robust sans any groveling.
But no matter, facts are fungible. At the same time, Netanyahu bears some of the onus. It lies within his total lack of spine, and in more ways than one. Therefore, he is unfit to lead my people – http://adinakutnicki.com/2013/03/21/israels-leade

      Just how stupid are you?

I won't hold my breath for Zero to make the Turks apologize for the Armenian Genocide.

    • john

Right – '' We're sorry we exterminated over a million people '' Can we be friends now ? That'll work …..

  • harrylies

Israel dosen't have gun control, but did Obama hold a gun to Netanyahus' head? He did not apologize for the raid, but for "mistakes". Police and soldiers make mistakes every day.

  • Flowerknife_us

It is just another signal that American Foreign policy has made an about face. Where we now support the ideology we originally went to war with. We hear nothing of the change through the Press simply because they were all in on "fundamental change" from the get go.

What are we to think of the Military??? Two chainsaws cut huge wedges out of their trunk and not a peep ftom the tree huggers about the damage to their Forest.

  • Ar'nun

Forget about what Obama did in regards to this, it's the devastating blow to Israel that Bibidealt it by agreeing to hand over his testicles to Erdogan at the behest of Obama. Bibi essentially admitted guilt, and the IDF soldier that was killed for daring to board the ship will go down in history as the evil aggressor. This could be a devastating blow to IDF moral. Bibi should be impeached for this cowardly betrayal.

Halfwit Daniel: your article, as customary, is entirely uninformed. Israel has offered the same apology to Turkey a number of times but Erdogan has turned it down because the "regret" was for the loss of life due to "operational" errors committed by Israel. He has insisted on an unqualified apology which Netanyahu was unwilling to offer. So, what has changed to recalibrate the calculus? Defense missiles and Arab spring which necessitate coordination with Israel on a strategic level for Erdogan. So, Netanyahu apologized instead of regretting and Erdogan did not mind that it was for operational errors Of course it was up to Obama to work it out.

Israel has made a major error by giving in to Turkish demands. This can only encourage more of the same by the egotistical Erdogan and his caveman cronies.

Israel should from the start have made counterdemands. That way, it would not have been a one way street. You simply cannot give in to Turks because then they smell blood and this only increases their appetite.

But we have to realize that all this has precedents in that Israel and the pro-Israel lobby in the United States have long given in to Turkish demands to help cover up the Armenian genocide. Israel sold its soul and lost credibility on the Holocaust. Now we know that Israel does not really care about others' genocides.

In the flotilla episode, Turkey has shown that it can intimidate Israel and wind up on top.
That bodes ill for the future unless Israel can now do something to humiliate Turkey and thus make sure that the Jewish state winds up as top dog.

I am from vancouver, canada and i wanted to say that the apology form Netanyahu is an insult to the people of Turkey. What happened on the Mavi Marmara was not a mistake,it was an act of terrorism. This insult by the israeli gov.should not be accepted as an apology by the israeli gov.
The israeli gov. is still commiting acts of piracy against boats going to Gaza. The israeli gov. should be charged with acts of piracy causing death for what happened on the Mavi marmara.Im sure the people of Turkey won't accept that insult from the israeli gov.

The Israeli blockade has been determined by the UN to be legal. Actions to violate that blockade are not. Reality is not what one wishes it to be.
