With 900,000 Vets on Food Stamps, Obama Cuts Military Benefits

anthem

Meanwhile Obama is also looking for ways to cut military pensions and health care benefits. (via Gateway Pundit)

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities 340,000 veterans receive public money for housing. And, 900,000 veterans live on food stamps. About 5,000 active duty troops are receiving food stamps.

In the latest blow to military families Obama cut the annual pay raise to military families by nearly 1%.

“We’ve really been shocked since 2008 to see the growth in the number of requests for food assistance,” said Operation Homefront’s Jim Knotts. “Since 2008, when the economy really started going south, we’ve had a 400 percent increase in the number of requests for food assistance alone.”

A soldier’s basic pay is $18,194, which is well below the federal poverty line. Rising divorce rates after repeat deployments and child support payments are making it difficult for some active-duty troops and veterans to pay bills.

Kready added that she knows someone who goes through food pantries because they’re too proud to collect food stamps.

And that’s not all that started going south in 2008. But this cut is only a small slice in Obama’s war on American soldiers.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel warned Tuesday that troops and their families will be asked to sacrifice on pay and benefits to preserve readiness in an era of tighter budgets.

This may be the most difficult” to achieve among his six priorities, Hagel said of proposals to trim pay increases, overhaul TRICARE and review retirement benefits while adapting to cuts in personnel.

But meanwhile money can be spent on Green Energy for the Navy and gay weddings. Because Obama has his priorities.

The new budget, which boosts spending in the short term in exchange for longer-term fee hikes and spending cuts, includes a provision that would reduce the cost-of-living adjustment for military retirees to 1 percent less than the rate of consumer inflation — and even reduces payments for veterans who were wounded in action.

Not only has Obama sent soldiers to Afghanistan while tying their hands so that they can’t fight back, but he even stabbed them in the back once they got out of the hospital.

The Obama administration has asked Congress to cap annual active duty and reserve component pay raises, and to phase in over four years a complex formula for raising TRICARE fees on retirees of all ages and their families.

Considering how the DoD is the NUMBER ONE route to the middle class for Black America — it’s hard to understand why Barry is not getting more kick from the CBC.
But, that’s been a general problem for he CBC: it can’t connect with the average Joe.
The gushing praise laid on Fidel Castro, by CBC ‘official delegates’ to Cuba, still rings in the ear.
    Do they have no shame?

    • Drakken

Do you think Obummer would hang out in the hood with the homies? This administration like the one slick willie had, hate the miltary with a passion. They have now throw the military under the bus and frankly I hope the military gives this administration what it deserves.

    • jeffsalzberg

It’s easy to understand; the article, and others like it, is a lie. They think you’re stupid enough to believe it and so desperate in your hatred of the President that you’ll except anything, unquestioningly.

      Why not prove them wrong?

      • JoseCuervo

yup.. Drakkens comments shows how ignorant, racist and immature conservatives are and why the lost the last 2 elections and why they will lose the next one as well.

  • DogmaelJones1

Does anyone need any more evidence that Obama hates the military, wishes to emasculate it, and gives it the one-finger salute every chance he can?

    • carpe diem 36

obama does not hate the military, he hates america and it being exceptionally strong in this world. he will try to diminish it in every way he can, he tramples on our best people who are willing to sacrifice their lives for him and his family as well as all of us. how does he think he will not suffer if the military were not there to defend us? he is vicious on top of being an idiot.

      • JoseCuervo

.. yeah ok buddy.. what’s next? Obama is a muslim?

        • Bob Bygone

          He is.

          • JoseCuervo

So far we’ve seen Obama the Communist, Obama the Black Radical, Obama the Secret Muslim, Obama the Atheist, Obama the Kenyan, Obama the Indonesian, Obama the Black Panther, Obama the Guy Who Is Just Like Adolph Hitler, and even Obama the Antichrist.

What makes Obama the most interesting man in the world is not just that he is able to simultaneously be all of these things – a gay Muslim who is really an atheist yet claims to be a Christian – but that no one who he ever met in all that time seems to be willing to verify any of these details. Which, if you really want to get into conspiratorial
mode, is probably because he had everyone who knew his secrets killed execution-style by the Illuminati Hit Squad.

      • Kathy Gram

People say things like this but give no proof or faxes to back such claims up.. I’d say Obama LOVES the Military, as a senator, Obama voted NO, to INVADE Iraq! Along with most of our Allies. Just think of all the soldiers that would still be alive and 20,000 + would have been saved from loosing limbs and so many other horrific injuries. Not to mention the 25,000 civilians killed in Iraq. All over oil! Think of the billions spent invading Iraq but none of it was worth one of our brave soldiers. Obama brought our soldiers HOME! If McCain had of won in 08 our soldiers would still be there. LOOK AT THE fax, The Bush Adim removed several SEC regulations that had been in effect since the 1929 stock market crash. The Bush admin let Bear Sterns go bankrupt in March of 08, they could of stopped the economic tsunami that started here and spread around the world. All summer long the Bush Admin told us, ‘everything is fine”. Obama inherited the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression. A disaster that experts said would take decades to recover from. The Obama Admin past legislation to slow the foreclosures, even those that were ‘under water’, stabilizing the housing market. The Dow went from 6,600 pts to 15,000 now. That’s people’s retirement, 401k, etc…I’m not saying everything is perfect, by far, but some good things have happened. Let the insults fly- but I’d really love to see some real fax not just insults…- Kathy, daughter of a Marine Vet Father & a Army Vet Grandfather .

    • Fam Foote Rivera

This is not real news here on this website. News has become a thing of opinion and not Facts. Obama voted not to send us to Iraq. That is what his vote in the Senate shows. As a President he went after the real cause of the terrorists attack.

  • john spielman

how about cutting Barry’s salary and and all travel perks for him and congress and the government employees. Use the money save to boost active duty and retired military benefits

    • carpe diem 36

if they could do that they would have done it long ago, apparently those who can either refuse or cannot. we just have to get rid of him.

      • JoseCuervo

you can’t get rid of him… he will serve his term and we will elect someone else.. that’s how it works.

Were you Demanding to cut Bush’s salary and travel perks while he was destroying Americas economy and sending us to 2 manufactured wars?

You want to talk about tax payers money? George W. Bush spent at least $20 million in taxpayer dollars just on flights to his ranch in Crawford. He was the most expensive vacation president in US history. Not only did Bush spend more days on vacation than any other president (He holds the record) , but he used Air Force One more often while on vacation than any other president in history.

        Some say he was “working”

Bush’s “working vacations” cost taxpayers a small fortune in travel costs because President Bush and his staff would make day trips on Air Force One all across the country in order to counter the criticism that he was on vacation too often. For eight years, Bush essentially used Air Force One as his personal vacation taxi service.

During Bush’s two terms, the cost of operating Air Force One ranged from $56,800 to $68,000 an hour. Bush used Air Force One 77 times to go to his ranch in Crawford, TX. Using the low end cost of $56,800, Media Matters calculated that each trip to Crawford cost taxpayers $259,687 each time, and $20 million total for Bush’s ranch flights.

That doesn’t count his European trips and his Africa trips or Laura’s safari with the twins or their fun trip to Rio. And the list goes on.

Bush was the vacation King. Bush set the record for most vacation time taken by president, 1020 days, more than 1/3rd of his presidency on vacation. Obama would have to serve 6 terms to catch up to Bush…

Save your drivel. No one’s buying

Take a glance at this excellent piece from a Chief Master Sergeant, USAF (Ret).

Paul Ryan has a safe seat in Wisconsin. His biography does look good.
What is not safe is Paul’s position on the House of Representatives Republican L Leadership and this his how he was suborned.

suborn: to bribe or *induce* (someone) unlawfully or *secretly* to perform some *misdeed* or to commit a crime.

Will Paul Ryan tell the American public that is afraid of bucking the Republican establishment because he might never regain a leadership position? Would you call that a lack of bravery?

      • JoseCuervo

Paul Ryan has only done 2 things in Wisconsin………

        1 named a Post Office
2 changed the tax on arrows

This article is absolutely insane. First of all the President simply proposes a budget, it’s the House who appropriates and passes it (which is currently controlled by our party, the Republicans). Second of all, Tea Party politicians like Ted Cruz are the ones who pushed for the sequester last year, and even wanted MORE across the board cuts this year! I’m currently stationed overseas with the military, and guess what, Cruz? If you cut military spending they won’t strip it from our ships or tanks or planes or training because that impacts readiness. They will have to cut entitlements, benefits, services, and personnel.
Republicans who support “across-the-board cuts” are NOT true GOP, and are an embarrassment to the party of Lincoln and Reagan. At this point the Democrats are going to have a candidate with stronger national defense credentials than any potential candidates from the red field!

    • MSG Snyder

I agree 100%! Pres. Obama has been a very good commander in chief. Probably the best in my lifetime and I’ve been active duty Army since 1990. I am proud to continue to serve under his leadership.

  • worldwatchman

It makes you to really think that you want to discourage your son or daughter on enlisting. Vets are NOT being treated as they should. If being called “Heroes” ends up you being betrayed by your own government

  • Hetherwick

This is absurd and ridiculous… The cuts for Veterans benefits didn’t originate with the President but rather with the GOP in congress and their “budget poster boy” Paul Ryan… who also wants to cut social security and medicare… check out this article from the VERY conservative Breitbart web site… http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/12/22/Paul-Ryan-doubles-down-on-move-to-cut-pensions-for-veterans

  • ThreeFiddy5

I thought Conservatives consider people that depend on government housing and food stamps “Freeloaders”. Once again, I’m baffled at the dual message..

    • JoseCuervo

only when it serves their rhetoric

Where were you guys when the SNAP cuts hit Vets? You know, SNAP cuts. The big GOP solution. http://www.military.com/daily-news/2013/10/29/nearly-1-million-vets-face-food-stamps-cut.html

  • Mark Chirhart
  • jeffsalzberg

I realize that you guys define “truth” as anything that reflects badly on Obama,” but the technical term for this article is, “Lie”.

    Hope this helps.

  • Brandigo

Our military should be paid better. Period. They should not have to go to food banks or go on food stamps!

It’s ridiculous that we have celebrities and politicians who live like kings and queens, and we treat them so (idolize?), but we pay our military, police, ambulance workers etc a pittance

  • pcvirginiabeach

Paul Ryan put these cuts in the budget and has continuously defended them. That does not absolve the horrible fact that Obama, our CIC, signed them into law- but many republicans- particularly in the house where this budget was written- and especially Paul Ryan who is proud of these cuts- share the blame. Vote all these losers out!

  • Rezsurfer

wow sharing this as Obamas fault im sure this bill was wrote by GOP not Obama… But some how its his fault not the people who wrote the bill SMH get out the bubble people

  • Mitch

I have no clue where you get off on this entitled rant, soldier. I’m military currently stationed overseas, and my father is still serving after giving 30 years of his life in service to this nation. The policies under the current president are as near to identical to the previous one as they could be!
Stop drinking the media’s Kool-Aid; conservatives at Fox News exploit us in the military just as much as the liberals do. You’re probably one of those people who think Bush was amazing and that Obama is the devil, although I would challenge you to provide any solid administration policy evidence to support that claim.
I served under President Bush, and I was proud to have him as my Commander-in-Chief. Now I am serving under President Obama, and I am just as proud to serve under him. In 2016, I will have a new Commander-in-Chief, and my obligation to him and to my country comes BEFORE my loyalty to the Republican Party.
We need to reunite as a nation, because the threats we face overseas are not just from terrorist extremist groups. Russia and China will overtake us, so if we want to remain the preeminent world leader we need to stop fighting each other.

    • Robert Farrell

Wake up my brother, Obama does not care about you. He sold us down the river with Benghazi and he will do the same to you and the troops you serve with. Open your eyes, this man has another agenda and keeping America safe and #1 is not it. However, you are right on two points. One being the intent of Russia and China to over take America and with a puppet like Obama in the white house they know they have a chance. Our only hope is to put a true Patriot in the White house in 2016 and I’m not talking a party man. Stay safe and God Bless!

      • JoseCuervo

There were about 30 protest going on at the same time but they HAVE to blame Benghazi on Obama…. Cops die, people die every day, the world is full of danger is not all Obama’s fault…. 4 people died… lets recap.. Under Bush…. are the 60 Americans that were killed on 11 different attacks on US diplomatic missions during his Presidency any less then an Ambassador. How many U.S. citizens were killed inside America by terrorists while Bush was President ? 2,985 people. Thousands of American soldiers died looking for non existent WMD’s.

Yeah.. lets all pound on Obama cause 4 people died. Under Obama.. and under his signature.. 24 + terrorist have being killed.. including Osama and Ghadafi…… remember the days when Bush said “i don’t know where Osama is and I don’t care, he is not a priority” this.. he said only 6 months after 9/11.

Bush makes Obama look like an angel!

        Bushes Benghazi’s:

January 22, 2002. Calcutta, India. Gunmen associated with
Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami attack the U.S. Consulate. Five people are killed.

June 14, 2002. Karachi, Pakistan. Suicide bomber
connected with al-Qaida attacks the U.S. Consulate, killing 12 and injuring 51.

        October 12, 2002. Denpasar, Indonesia. U.S. diplomatic
offices bombed as part of a string of “Bali Bombings.” No fatalities.

February 28, 2003. Islamabad, Pakistan. Several gunmen
fire upon the U.S. Embassy. Two people are killed.

May 12, 2003. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Armed al-Qaida

Americans. The assailants committed suicide by detonating a truck bomb.

July 30, 2004. Tashkent, Uzbekistan. A suicide bomber
from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan attacks the U.S. Embassy, killing two
        people.

terrorists storm the U.S. Consulate and occupy the perimeter wall. Nine people
        are killed.

March 2, 2006. Karachi, Pakistan again. Suicide bomber
attacks the U.S. Consulate killing four people, including U.S. diplomat David
Foy who was directly targeted by the attackers. (I wonder if Lindsey Graham or
Fox News would even recognize the name “David Foy.” This is the third Karachi
terrorist attack in four years on what’s considered American soil.)

September 12, 2006. Damascus, Syria. Four armed gunmen
shouting “Allahu akbar” storm the U.S. Embassy using grenades, automatic
weapons, a car bomb and a truck bomb. Four people are killed, 13 are wounded.

January 12, 2007. Athens, Greece. Members of a Greek
terrorist group called the Revolutionary Struggle fire a rocket-propelled
grenade at the U.S. Embassy. No fatalities.

March 18, 2008. Sana’a, Yemen. Members of the
al-Qaida-linked Islamic Jihad of Yemen fire a mortar at the U.S. Embassy. The
shot misses the embassy, but hits nearby school killing two.

July 9, 2008. Istanbul, Turkey. Four armed terrorists
attack the U.S. Consulate. Six people are killed.

September 17, 2008. Sana’a, Yemen. Terrorists dressed asmilitary officials attack the U.S. Embassy with an arsenal of weapons including RPGs and detonate two car bombs. Sixteen people are killed, including an
American student and her husband (they had been married for three weeks when the attack occurred). This is the second attack on this embassy in seven
        months.

      • Mitch

You’re misinformed, my friend. You are not privy to the reports on what happened in Libya, so stop jumping to conclusions. You cannot present any evidence that our President does not care about the troops, and blaming the Benghazi attack in him is asinine. If anyone is responsible it would be the RSO, COS, COM, and the DATT. If you don’t know what those are then you aren’t well-informed enough to discuss foreign policy and should remove your foot from your mouth before you embarrass yourself further.
Although I am glad we agree we need true leadership in the White House. Personally I would support Jon Huntsman in 2016.

      • Rich

Rob you are really IGNORANT and need to get EDUCATED. In 2009, Darrell Issa, Jason Chaffetz, Paul Ryan and the other House Republicans voted to cut funding for Embassy Security from President Obama’s Embassy Security Request that is why Benghazi happened, no funding for proper security. I see your a President Obama hater just like congressional republicans, WHY??

Excuse me, but have you seen the GOP fighting for veterans? The GOP wants cuts and they won’t stop fighting until every single dollar of social programs has been demolished. You are pretty incredibly naive if you are trying to blame this on Obama?! Are you fucking kidding me? Is Obama proposing cuts? NO! the GOP shut down the government because they didn’t want people having health care!! And the veterans benefits are the same!

  • Efishant

Lets talk about how much Bush cut from the VA during a time of war and the VA funding programs that Republicans refused to vote for a few weeks ago! Oh no, you don’t wanna talk about that! FUCKING HYPOCRITES AND POLITICAL HACKS!
