But for Mr. Cruz, a Tea Party favorite who represents a state with rapidly changing demographics, finding common ground will not be easy. Many of the bedrock Tea Party supporters who helped elect him are immigration hard-liners who object to even the slightest nod toward amnesty, a loaded word that generally means providing an avenue for legal residency to people who entered the United States illegally. Such conservatives tend to favor mass deportation, or “self-deportation,” for the millions of undocumented immigrants.

On the other hand, Hispanics in Texas are projected to eclipse the white population sometime in the next decade, and Mr. Cruz cannot afford to alienate large numbers of Latino voters with a strident anti-immigrant tone and a hard-line legislative approach. Major business interests also are supporting a path to citizenship.

What Mr. Cruz has tried to articulate in both word and deed is a middle ground. It got no support from Democrats in Washington, but it goes further than many on the far right want to go by offering leniency to undocumented immigrants here already: A path to legal status, but not to citizenship. A green card with no right to naturalization.

Immigration-reform legislation from the Senate’s so-called Gang of Eight passed that chamber in June and includes a 13-year path to citizenship. Mr. Cruz pushed unsuccessfully for amendments that would have, among other things, eliminated the citizenship component.

Asked about what to do with the people here illegally, however, he stressed that he had never tried to undo the goal of allowing them to stay.

“The amendment that I introduced removed the path to citizenship, but it did not change the underlying work permit from the Gang of Eight,” he said during a recent visit to El Paso. Mr. Cruz also noted that he had not called for deportation or, as Mitt Romney famously advocated, self-deportation.

Mr. Cruz said recent polling indicated that people outside Washington support some reform, including legal status without citizenship. He said he was against naturalization because it rewarded lawbreakers and was unfair to legal immigrants. It also perpetuates illegal crossings, he added.

Besides barring citizenship while instituting some level of legalization for those here already, Mr. Cruz has proposed increasing the number of green cards awarded annually, to 1.35 million from 675,000. He also wants to eliminate the per-country limit that he said left applicants from countries like Mexico, China and India hamstrung when they tried to gain legal entry to this country.

Mr. Cruz said the Obama administration and partisan Democrats would not yield on the citizenship requirement, which they know would kill the entire effort because of a lack of support in the House. The result, he said, will be a future campaign tool by which Democrats can blame Republicans for failing to overhaul immigration.

You know your thinking turns people off.
It's the money honey. Traditionally the Democrats win by saying we'll give you free goodies and the Republicans win by saying we'll cut your taxes. Obama when he ran for the first term said I'll give you goodies but won't raise your taxes. How do you win against that? You point out that he will tax you in other ways. He'll tax you by devaluating your currency. He'll borrow money and you'll have to pay it back with interest. The other money argument which Romney should have made especially when he was accused of being a rich out of touch man is to say "I want all Americans to have a chance to become rich. If you want to be on food stamps vote Obama. If you want to make money vote for me." That's the way to be in touch with the American people. Turn your wealth to your advantage, don't let the Democrats turn it into a disadvantage.

Thanks for all the input from David, Pat Cadell, Bill Whittle, and Tom Cotton. Some of the Democrats may align with leberal progressivism and Islamism for CONTROL, but they need to be told that after the foreign government totally destroys American freedom and rights, it will then start slaughering people just like Hitler did the Jews. Never think that a holocaust can't happen in America.

Another way that conservatives and Republicans can fight back and win is by following the "autopsy" that the GOP chair is doing regarding reaching out to minorities as well as other people who are victims of the left's lunatic policies. We need to emphasize the current state of conditions in urban areas and how the left is not helping the people (particularly people of color) living in those areas. In addition, conservatives and Republicans must support the right for the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico to be admitted as a state of the Union (or at the very least support a certain form of a federally-sponsored status plebiscite resolving the island's political status). Unfortunately, many conservatives and Republicans keep being somewhat sympathetic to the agenda of the left-wing Popular Democratic Party (one of the major local political parties in Puerto Rico, and the main party supporting the island's current territory status), and thus oppose measures towards supporting status resolution. This is despite the fact that there are no Republicans nor conservatives in the Popular Democratic Party at all (the PDP's membership is 95% Democrat and 5% other/non-affiliates), while the New Progressive Party (the party supporting Puerto Rico becoming a U.S. state) is predominantly conservative (the NPP's membership is at least 75% Republican, 20% Democrat and 5% other/non-affiliates) and believes in American patriotism. Despite the name "Progressive", the NPP was actually named after Theodore Roosevelt's 1912 "Bull Moose" Party (the NPP has absolutely nothing to do with Henry Wallace's isolationist 1948 party whatsoever). The New Progressive Party was founded by a life long conservative Republican politician, Luis Ferre, in 1967. In Puerto Rico, those affiliated with the mainland GOP support statehood for the island (as all GOP politicians in PR are members of the NPP), while those affiliated with the mainland Democrats are divided between statehood supporters (those who are members of the NPP) and supporters of the current territory status (those who are members of the PDP). In order for conservatives and Republicans to succeed, they must distance themselves completely from the Popular Democratic Party (who are our ideological foes) and its ridiculous agenda and give full support for the New Progressive Party (who are our real allies) in its quest to make Puerto Rico the next state of the Union and to give the nearly 4 million American citizens living in the island the right to participate in all national elections. In addition to PR's status issue, conservatives and Republicans need to expose the truth about the left's real agenda to the American people. We need to remind the American people about the left's failed policies, both domestic and foreign, that have caused serious consequences in this country. We need to unite the American people in order to succeed in 2014, 2016 and onward.

You have said a lot. I cannot honestly say that I disagree with most of what you have said. You have spoken from your heart and mind and everyone should listen carefully and be forewarned by your wisdom!

I am more of an optimist than you are. [NOTE: I fully realize that optimism does not make anyone right! It certainly does not make anyone better able to predict the future!! I was "cautiously 'optimistic'" that Barack Hussein Obama would lose in 2012.]

Let me just say this: The very same things that you have said about China, Russia & Brazil, were said about Japan back in the 1980's. Is Japan now our master? And this about energy independence: We are now learning that the U.S. has the resources to supply the world in energy for hundreds of years. Despite BHO, the EPA and radical enviro-nazis, free-enterprise and technological advancements are making those resources available more and more almost every day!

Don't worry, be HAPPY! We are Americans! We survived Woodrow Wilson, FDR and LBJ!! We can survive--and THRIVE--after Obama!!!!

We can survive–and THRIVE–after Obama!!!!

The debate goes completely awry by casting blacks as noble suffering victims. As such, it inadvertently mimics the Left without even knowing it. For blacks are no victims of "liberals" than they are of "conservatives." They are victimizers. They are violent, predatory and take terrible advantage of the welfare system, the tort liability system, and any other system from which they can grab free stuff. Let the Democrats have 'em. We Republicans need to reach out to the white vote and block fake immigration "reform" (i.e., amnesty/increased immigration) at every turn. That's the way we'll win in 2016 and beyond.

I'll change my mind when I see an outbreak of white flash mobs looting and terrorizing black-owned businesses.

I'm not sure there is a single Republican who wants to preside over the decline of America.

The reset will be a dirty, thankless job, not unlike the period post 1865, but I do appreciate the point made regarding "national security" issues. Sadly, few news programs spend time on World News. The exception is world news regarding business and the stock/commodity markets.

Interestingly, our Senators working on the next Farm Bill have been spending more time trying to craft that monstrosity to fit Brazil, Mexico, and Canada's requirements, than considering what will happen as a result of the abrupt abandonment of the cheap food policy of the last 70 years.

A productive dialogue, it bought forward many points and ideas how the Republicans should organize, or reorganize themselves. Frankly I think its too late, this should have been done decades ago, before the leftist beast took over nearly if not all important institutions and turned them upside down.
I'm saying too late because world events are changing very rapidly to the negative, and unfortunately again Americans have little or no idea what is happening, where and how. America is insolvent today, the external debts can never be paid back, the manufacturing base has gone (to China and elsewhere), and the country is too dependent on energy from abroad. The morale is low, the real figures of unemployment are more than double of the official figures and the inflation is also much more than officially stated. Now, the Chinese, Russia and other large industrial countries (Brazil ect) are already trading among themselves skipping entirely the US$. The US won't move a finger in the Middle East, and it is exactly there where the next big war will initiate. At this point, America will be taken by surprise of events, though is in no shape to counter and take part for its own security. Major disruptions will occur, vessels with vital commodities and energy cannot reach the US. Internal strive is then ripe. I guess this will happen (or similar events) before the next presidential election, therefore I dare to say it is too late for the Republicans to change, even if hypothetically the RNC would endorse what the panelists said during their presentation.
Another point: The Republicans should have insisted that B. Hussein Obama before his first term election shows ALL of his documents! (Birth Certificate, and every College Diploma, SS Nr and so forth) as the US Constitution requires, that was a very fatal mistake, and so the US, in my humble opinion has an illegitimate President. For evil to occur it is sufficient good people do nothing, and this is precisely what happened. Nobody can turn the clock of time backwards, but the situation today on our planet isn't one to be happy about. Probably humanity is in need of a correction, I fear if this is the case, the correction will still be remembered in 3013!

Agree or disagree, this dialogue is filled with valuable truths and perspectives. Unfortunately, I don't think that most politicians and media people are intellectually equipped to derive any value from this information. Horowitz could be right that it's all about proper framing of the message. Thoughtful discourse is worthwhile, but when it's all said and done we're left with "War is Hell."

Imagine if Romney had just stood up at the debate,
just stood up on his feet and pointed his finger at
Obama and asked him Why! Why! Did you allow
4 Americans to die in Benghazi?!! Why Mr President!! Why!!

Regardless of the classified backstory, if he had
done just this much, he would have won a landslide.

If you can't find a team that can accomplish this with
the Benghazi context, you really don't deserve to win.

If they'd do this now, it would win the country.
