What are you talking about....the "targeting" of "conservative" groups? What ever happened to that biggest scandal in the history of the world? Where did it go? You not only retain it, but at a hugely elevated level. The accusation was that the IRS had given special scrutiny to "tea party" groups that were applying for a particular tax status....which they had all gotten. None of them were even denied..so that whole thing was a made up tempest in a teapot...(rim shot).

So what are you talking about sunshine?

I have always said that if conservatives had a "great project" for our education system, I'm all ears.

"What does that say about the program that makes it so dicey politically to sell to the voters? It says that you don't have rational selling points or proven value."

It's, what, a week out of the gate? There are a lot of "moving parts" to a plan this large. You could also ask, "What does it say about the opponents to this plan that they relied on lies about 'death panels' et al. to create the canard that "the majority of the people oppose this plan?"

In other words, you can have legitimate objections to this plan, but it's opponents didn't use any for two election cycles which were net gains for the proponents of this plan.

"trying to sell complete delusion on the basis of idiotic Marxist or socialist theories"

Maybe it's a dead horse I'm beating here, but the ACA is pretty much the same thing Republicans proposed in 1993 and championed when Mitt did it in Massachusetts. It strains credulity to think the Republican Party--and not "just a few"--was under sway to such a mass socialist delusion for so long, in a party where being 'more conservative than thou' and vigilant 'constitutional rigor' is par. I honestly don't get it, and I don't see how it doesn't, politically speaking, completely undermine the current objections--even if, as you say, Republicans have recently "come to their senses." That is a tough sell.

I appreciate your formulation about the place for utopian dreamers--we need 'em, just not nearly as many. As a parent (and thus anecdotal observer) I have been seeing more kids being steered into fields of "hard" skills, with the classic notion that you can always play in the local orchestra, but the engineering/chem/finance degree has a better chance of getting you a job when you need it. That comes from the parents, who have experienced both this economy and the 'cycle of dreamers' created in the 1970s, but is supported by the schools in significant ways as well, with many pre-professional offerings and entrepreneurship initiatives. So it's not as dire as you think, overall. The one guy who teaches some Howard Zinn isn't going to do that much damage.

It's all smoke and mirrors and big promises with no substance. It's pure theory without any regard for planning on delivering on the promises.

"It sounds as though you think voter gullibility will be easy enough to buy."

That's part of it. Given the promises, it only makes sense to "save people" and "save money" when the economy is so scary for people to understand. Use fear to sell your power grabbing schemes. Which is precisely my point, because obviously any time you come up with a project that is truly superior, you don't need to worry so much about politics. Using fear to grab control of greater than 1/20 of our economy is evil when the only motive is to gain power.

"And it's true stats can be massaged however one likes, especially when one controls the studies."

When people have projects that have no real value and the strategy is to sell rather than deliver something of value, yeah. You see lots of deception employed in those cases. If you have something that actually delivers something that is widely desirable, you can simply use the real indisputable numbers.

When Democrats (or anyone) lies about a project and invents numbers, it's just not compelling to people to say that they're lying. The opposition tends to try to invent their own numbers, which then get's in to who is right instead of correctly focusing on where the burden of proof should lie.

"But I think the problem for Obama and the Democrats, now, is relatively short term. At this point, you can't blame greedy Republicans if your insurance is too expensive, or if the care you're able to get for your insurance dollar is lacking."

Yes, but the fix is in. We're on the threshold of very dangerous and unprecedented territory.

"You can try, or you can make other excuses for a bit...but this is a can you can't kick down the road into "feed the G more money and things will improve." It affects too many people, right now. And if it were disastrous, it would have too much economic impact short term."

But we don't know if there are enough smart swing voters who are waking up to the BS, and the Democrats will try to blame Republicans because you can always say that they're holding back money. Money in theory is infinite. And until we reach infinite funding, the Democrats can always point to the greedy rich 1 percenters represented by the greedy rich racist bloodsucking Republicans for their failures because of rich person greed. That's how the game works today.

"As someone who is far less sanguine about universal single payer than my liberal friends, what I would be worried about instead is the ACA actually working out for 4-5 years, because once its flaws start to show (not doing much to lower costs), those calling for an end to the middleman insurance "industry" will have a case to make (regardless of the fact that insurance will have been even more highly regulated). Now this COULD work in conservative's favor (since many conservatives make the case about the inefficiencies of the insurance middleman, as well) but the problem, then, would be people's weariness with reform."

Outrageous schemes for grabbing power will continue until we make headway with teaching people how to read these situations in the short term, and reforming our schools urgently so that future voters are not fooled by delusional Utopian dreamers.

I'm not at all a naysayer for those that attempt great projects. But I know the difference between reaching for the stars with some basis in reality and trying to sell complete delusion on the basis of idiotic Marxist or socialist theories. When they don't even try to use real accounting theories or explain in reality how it's going to work, we're dealing with delusional people and absurd projects only intended to win power politically by getting funded. They don't really care if it works, as long as it works for them.

And there is never a bad time for reform when it clearly makes sense. Politicians are too lazy today because we've cultivated a leadership standard because we stupidly elect these kinds of people without any regard for whether they can deliver anything useful or even understand the promises they make.

Again, this goes back to our schools. That's the root problem and the cure. We may not have enough time though.

Ummm....maybe you should check that out. Legal isn't the same as bipartisan. Who knew the Republicans would vote against the Heritage Foundation plan that was in Bob Dole's platform and that their nominee put in place in his own state, but there you are. The house Republicans now enjoy some crazy gerrymandered districts in their home states which they have busily been redrawing to make sure they can continue to subvert the will of the majority. You can no like it, but do you really want to back up the above histrionics?

What is really bizarre is that Americans do not realize they are as much a target as Israel is. Netanyahu tried to point that out in his interview with NBC.

Netanyahu to NBC: This messianic, apocalyptic, radical regime

But Iran already has missiles to reach Israel. They are developing intercontinental ballistic missiles to reach you. The prospect of nuclear terrorism is terrorism against you. Those long range ballistic missiles have only one purpose in the world , their sole purpose is to arm them with a nuclear payload. You do not want to be in a position where this messianic, apocalyptic, radical regime, that has these wild ambitions, but nice spokesmen, gets away with building weapons of mass death.

I don't know that it will be the "final" pin, that's pretty dramatic. Are people getting the care they require? Can they afford to pay for their insurance? Will providers be paid for what they do? If the answer is "no" to any of these questions, we'll know relatively quick, and in time for the next couple elections.

Ask any insurance rep: people traditionally were just not that well-informed about their health care plan, about what their care costs, and about how that all worked. That doesn't mean they're "stupid"--they'd just been insulated from most of it, before. They are going to be better informed now, because they have to be. Is an informed consumer ever a bad thing?

If they can see the ACA is not working, there are two important elections in the next couple years.
