Rachel Maddow’s Brain Numbing Attack on David Horowitz

Last Friday, the terminally sophomoric Rachel Maddow turned her adolescent sarcasm on the Republican National Committee for seeking advice from Dick Cheney, Hugh Hewitt and David Horowitz. How absurd it was she cackled. “I thought I was being punked.” In regard to Frontpage editor Horowitz, she was aroused by the fact that the RNC invited him to keynote their conference at the Reagan library (as it happens that very Friday) to advise them on how to persuade minorities that  their best interests were served by voting against Democrats, remarks, by the way, that got a standing ovation. (The attack on Horowitz begins at 3:09 of the video.)

Since Rachel Maddow is incapable of dealing in ideas or facts, she thought it was sufficient to read off the titles of three of what she called David’s “books,” including what she described as his “magnum opus” — The Race Card. The Race Card is actually not anything that anyone who read it could think of as a “magnum opus.” It is a book of essays written mostly by other people that Horowitz and Peter Collier edited fifteen years ago. The other titles Maddow chortled over were Hating Whitey and Other Progressive Causes and “Black Skin Privilege” (not even a book by David but a 35-page pamphlet that he wrote with John Perazzo). Since Maddow can’t be bothered to read let alone think about the ideas of people who don’t share her blind prejudices, she remains blissfully ignorant that her own attitudes are racist, which happens to be what these texts are about.

It is inconceivable to people like Maddow, for example, that an incompetent, unaccomplished, left-wing ideologue like Barack Obama, whose closest friends and advisers were America-haters Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright, would never have been elected president if he weren’t black — one of the points of “Black Skin Privilege.”

Of course there’s a method to the sarcasm and scorn that Maddow directed at David Horowitz. It is to avoid confrontation with the fact that the principal oppressor of blacks and Hispanics in American society are Democrats and progressives like her. We don’t have a transcript of Horowitz’s remarks to the RNC, but everything of substance that he did say is contained in the passage below from Go For The Heart: How Republicans Can Win (the full text is available at www.gofortheheart.org).

Go For The Heart: How Republicans Can Win
By David Horowitz
(Excerpt pp.30-35)

The bottom line is this: If Republicans want to persuade minorities they care about them, they have to stand up for them; they have to defend them; and they have to show them that Democrats are playing them for suckers, exploiting them, oppressing them, and profiting from their suffering.

Large populations of the African American and Hispanic poor are concentrated in America’s inner cities – Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Harlem, South Central Los Angeles. In these inner cities the unemployment rates are off the charts, the school systems so corrupt and ineffective that half the children drop out before they graduate and half those who do are functionally illiterate. They will never get a decent job or a shot at the American dream.

In these inner cities every city council and every school board and every school district are 100% controlled by Democrats and have been for more than 70 years. Everything that is wrong with the inner cities and their schools that policy can affect, Democrats are responsible for. Democrats have their boot heels on the necks of millions of poor African American and Hispanic children and are crushing the life out of them every year. But Republicans are too polite to mention it.

In the middle of the 2012 campaign a teacher union strike shut down the schools in Chicago, Obama’s home town. The issue was not pay but the union’s refusal to allow teacher rewards to be connected to teacher performance. African American and Hispanic children were the true victims of the determination to protect bad teachers and not to reward good ones. Yet Republicans ignored the strike, and never put a face on its victims.

At the Republican convention one keynote speaker referred to the teacher unions and the issue of teacher rewards and union obstruction. This was Governor Chris Christie, probably the most aggressive and articulate Republican warrior. But here is how Christie framed the Democrat/union atrocity:

We believe that the majority of teachers in America know our system must be reformed to put students first so that America can compete…. We [Republicans] believe that we should honor and reward the good ones while doing what’s best for our nation’s future — demanding accountability, higher standards and the best teacher in every classroom.

They believe the educational establishment will always put themselves ahead of children. That self-interest trumps common sense. They believe in pitting unions against teachers, educators against parents, and lobbyists against children. They believe in teacher’s unions.”

And that’s all he said. The issues are there – accountability, standards and rewards for teacher performance. The policy is there. But the moral outrage is missing. The victims are missing and the culprits aren’t named. It’s not the “educational establishment” that’s ruining the lives and blocking the opportunities of African American and Hispanic children. It’s the Democrats – they are the educational establishment in every failing public school district. The Democrat teacher unions and the Democrat Party that supports them are destroying the lives of African American and Hispanic students whose parents are too poor to put them in private schools – the same private schools where Democrat legislators and union leaders send their own children.

Democrats will fight to the death to prevent poor parents from getting vouchers to provide their children with the same education that well-heeled Democratic legislators provide for theirs. This is a moral atrocity. This is an issue to get angry about and mobilize constituencies over. This is an issue that could drive a Gibraltar size wedge through the Democratic base. But Republicans are too polite to do that.

This is merely the most obvious atrocity that Democrats are committing against America’s impoverished minorities. Subverting family structures through a misconceived welfare system, encouraging food stamp dependency, providing incentives to bring into this world massive numbers of children who have no prospect of a decent life just to earn a welfare dollar. These are the corrupt fruits of Democratic welfare policies which are spiraling out of control. Republicans criticize these programs as “wasteful.” They need to start attacking them as destructive, as attacks on the human beings who are ensnared by them.

The way for Republicans to show they care about minorities is to defend them against their oppressors and exploiters, which in every major inner city in America without exception are Democrats. Democrats run the welfare and public education systems; they have created the policies, ruin the lives of the recipients of their handouts. It’s time that Republicans started to hold Democrats to account; to put them on the defensive and take away the moral high ground, which they now occupy illegitimately. Government welfare is not just wasteful; it is destructive.  The public school system in America’s inner cities is not merely ineffective; it is racist and criminal.

a very humble Thank you for all you do.

Spot on , but the majority of the country will never read this , and have never heard of David and if they have their getting their info from people like Maddow – conclusion > nothing will dent the american public at large

    • Charles Wenzel

But John, who David is speaking to is not the public in general but the Republican Party , (supposedly) "the other side" who does have a semblance of a voice on the national stage, especially during the election cycle (which seems almost perpetual). Therefore, David is not trying to educate and arouse the country but those–perhaps like Gov. Christie–who WILL fight.

What I never understood. – As a Jew, is Horowitz White, Black or Colored? People from the Midd-East can hardly pass as White? Could this dilema be the root of Horowitz' constant occupation with this theme?

    • jacob

I agree with Horowitz that Republicans are too polite (i would say stupid) to take the Democraps
faces and rub them in the issue the way done to puppies when they defecate where they were
      shown not to…
Example is McCain's failure to tell OBAMA when debating that most of the economic debacle can
be chalked up to the abuses of FREDDIE and FANNIE and that, when he Mc Cain proposed a
legislation to curb such abuses, his strongest opponent was none other than Senator Obama
Furthermore, the presidential candidate of the Republican Party should have been someone like
NEWT GINGRICH or HERMAN CAIN but ever ROMNEY….
I dare bet that any of them would have swept the floor with Obama and left him for a doormat but…

      • EarlyBird

Oh sure. Herman Cain would be a great president today. Dear Lord, the man was such a self promoter. Why is it that the moment a guy has great success in business, he believes he can suddenly run the United States of America? The Pizza King, with zero experience in politics, can suddenly be president? Sorry, it really does take a political insider, not an outsider, to run the country.

No, the extreme right wing of the Republican Party, which this site represents, should have allowed Romney to actually act like the pragmatic problem solver he is, and we'd be talking about President Romney today.

        • Spider

I'd rather have a Pizza King for Prez rather than a Mu-slim King any day. We need more people in office that have expierience at something other than being a "professional politician" Don't you think? This is why everything is so fouled up right now – nothing but former ambulance chasing lawyers turned polititions making decisions that their not qualified to make. So what experience did Obama have? None that's what.. He has never done a real days work in his life or run a busines or even had a real job for that matter. Oh but he is eminitely qualified to be Prez ??

          • EarlyBird

"We need more people in office that have expierience at something other than being a "professional politician" Don't you think?"

Yes, that's why I think Romney was a great pick. He not only had real business experience and understood what incentivizes business to create jobs and invest, but he also successfully ran Massachusetts as governor. Successful governorships seem to be good backgrounds for president.

Unfortunately, he seemed to barely mention his time as Mass governor, and in fact seemed to try to run away from it, because he was a moderate and pragmatic one who got things done. What the means is he made sensible compromises with the Dem legislature to move the ball forward. This is heresy to the right wing extremists who have taken over the GOP.

          • EarlyBird

  • Tpartywarrior

I live in Milwaukee where the 4th graders have the worst reading skills in the nation. Inner city males unemployment is 50%. Democrats have been in charge of the School Board and the city itself for decades, yet the black community continues to vote for them.
Somehow we have to punch thru the information that it's not working under the Democrats.

    • Questions

Blacks will always vote Democrat regardless of whether their policies "work." Blacks love a free lunch and Democrats serve the largest portions. The Republican challenge ought to be to reach out to the white vote. But the lords of Conservatism Inc. won't allow such heresy. Which is why we'll most likely lose again in 2016.

      • Omar

Questions, enough with your bigotry. What about prominent minority conservatives like Herman Cain and Ted Cruz? They are not Democrats. They are Republicans.

      • EarlyBird

"Blacks will always vote Democrat regardless of whether their policies "work." Blacks love a free lunch and Democrats serve the largest portions."

See, bigot, this is why I say people on this site are bigots. You're saying blacks are lazy and want hand outs. Surely, some are, but "blacks," as in "all blacks" is what you're really saying, bigot.

        • Drakken

So? Could you point out to the rest of us "bigots" where there is a republican majority in a black dominated area or city?

      • EarlyBird

Oh, and furthermore, it's not true that blacks will always vote for the Democrats. Many are open to conservative principles. You're simply saying that some genetic impulse pre-determines how they will vote, because you are a bigot.

        • Walt

You throw the word bigot around very easily, yet you can't dispute the the fact that the vast majority of blacks DO vote for Democrats! Why – mainly because they are tribal, in that they are very easily convinced (by neighbors, ministers, etc.) to get in line and vote like everyone else. To do otherwise brings the wrath of the community down upon them in the form of slurs like 'whitey', 'uncle tom', etc. which is the heighth of modern day insults in the black community. If that is not true, then tell us why 98% of the black vote went to an incompetent such as Obama. The black community is never going to be a responsible unit of our population until such time as they are forced off of the LBJ/democrat plantation of welfare, abortions and broken families to a point where they can think for themselves.

          • EarlyBird

No, I don't dispute that a huge percentage of black Americans vote Democrat. This is what the bigot said:

"Blacks will always vote Democrat regardless of whether their policies "work." Blacks love a free lunch and Democrats serve the largest portions."

            And you pipe up with:

"The black community is never going to be a responsible unit of our population until such time as they are forced off of the LBJ/democrat plantation of welfare, abortions and broken families to a point where they can think for themselves."

Because you don't personally know a single black person, and can't imagine any of them not fulfilling this stereotype (which many rural white trash also fulfill).

Proper and accurate critiques of black culture are not bigotry. But many are and are undeniably so.

          • Drakken

Ohh the ole you don't know any black people or muslims to be able to make a reasonable determination on what demographics and politics and how they affect how they vote.

          • Trace-element

I know black people. In fact, my best friend is a black woman…a conservative black woman. Having said that, I must also tell you she voted for Obama because of his skin color, and no other reason. After his second year in office, I asked her if she was still happy he won the election, and her reply was a resounding "Hell no! I wish I'd never even heard of that man." But the fact that a conservative voted for him because of the level of melanin in his skin shows that race trumps ideology. She learned from her mistake and won't be doing anything like that again. Unfortunately, over 90% of black people — and millions of whites as well — we're too stupid to learn that lesson.

  • WildJew

I have an idea. Since Maddow is obviously much smarter and more politically astute than Horowitz, contact the Maddow show; ask them to invite D. Horowitz on as a guest the way Hannity does. Then she can grill him about his books and his writings. It will be a win-win for Maddow!

it is about time, I think there are forces that are set in place for him to be the right man

By switching to personal attacks, easy to do to Maddow, you are sinking into the same pattern used by those on the Left who lack a valid argument.
While Rachel is an easy target to dislike, I rarely watch her sarcastic bile, we should stick with facts. We have the facts on our side and that was the point DH was making.

Well as a counter arguement, we on the right have taken that high moral ground too often and look where it has gotten us? The time for niceties and pleasantries with the left is over, time to get down in the trenches and get dirty. The left always folds when confronted, so the time to to get up personal and close.

The problem is that due to its constiuency(ies), the GOP wants to play both sides of the fence. Put bluntly, there are conservatives, like Horowitz and Christie, who are not racists–lots of them, in fact. And there are those who would never think of themselves as racists, but just can't help coming off that way. These folks just need some coaching to keep their feet out of their mouths. And then, there are those who just are racist, and their votes are needed.

"But there are plenty of democrat racists, too!" I'm sure there are–but it's not a political problem for democrats, is it?

He's a liberal, and he's black, but in addition to Horowitz's advice try to keep an open mind while reading this piece by Clarence Page:

"And there are those who would never think of themselves as racists, but just can't help coming off that way."

Nonsense. It's already come out – from the horse Chris Mathews' mouth – that the "left" defines racism so that everybody who opposes them is a racist one way or another. Never them, of course, even when they attack conservative blacks as "uncle Toms" and worse. It's all part and parcell of their Orwellian language. You're a slow or reluctant learner, Jim.

      • Jim_C

The point of the article I posted is that people know when someone is talking to them as an equal and when they are being condescended to. The Republican party right now barely has anybody who can communicate with minorities without coming across as out of touch, at best.

        • reader

Yes, Jim, and the point I am making that the Republican Party should not be concerned about how to communicate to "minorities," but how to communicate to the American people about what it should stand for – which it is not doing courtesy Karl Roves of the day. Democrats – a modern marxist party – follows alinskyite identity politics tactics by fragmenting the audience into phony segments. And when a "minority" gets astray and starts talking some common sense – like Dr. Carson, the Democrats viciously attack them and get away with it. They have defined the language terrain: a Democrat – aka a marxist – cannot be a racist, apparently. Even though, the Democrat Party is historically the Party of racism in America.

          • EarlyBird

This is absurdist rhetoric: "…Democrats – a modern Marxist party…"

Extremist idiots on the right pushing the GOP to speak this way is what is helping to disqualify it as a serious governing party. It's why Romney, a pragmatic moderate, was hamstrung.

The Democrats in 2013, for all their faults, are perfectly in line with a very long American tradition of left-of-center governance. However much I oppose so much of their policies, their's is not some un-American, alien philosophy of governance. Read some very basic history. And recognize how far to the right the entire political landscape has shifted since Reagan.

Since the very beginning of the Republic, between our very Founding Fathers, there has been a tension between individual freedoms and the greater good, and that's a healthy tension to have. The Dems represent the greater good, the Repubs represent the individual, and both need a voice.

          • reader

"The Dems represent the greater good"

The greater good is pure demagoguery, particularly loved by marxists like you. So, to sum it up: the present Democrat Party is marxist and you're a troll. A marxist troll that is. There's nothing conservative about it.

          • EarlyBird

Oh, everyone you don't like is a "troll."

You've clearly never read the Federalist Papers, or know what the basic disagreements were which led to the Civil War (not simply "slavery"), etc., etc.

You're a complete idiot, and a gnat. Go away.

          • reader

I've already addressed the Federalist Papers. Clearly, I've read it and you've read the spark notes from huffington crowd on this. You are an ignorant troll, I've proved it more than once. Your nagging hanging around and trolling will not change this.

          • Jim_C

What do you think Karl Rove is doing to hold back the conservative message?.

          • reader

Simply put, Karl Rove is not a conservative. He is a big government Republican hanging around to make money off of being the mythical "architect" of George W's ascendancy, but his elections record is actually dismal when looked at closely.

  • marios

more than anything else Dem's afraid of truth supporting by facts and arguments. So they hate David Horovitz as he is always speaking up truth with supporting facts and arguments. If Rep's have 50% of courageous and abide principles as David Horovitz! Thank you so much Mr. Horowitz for everything you do for us, for this country. The article is great. Democrats changed 60 years ago family oriented, hard working black people to lazy, irresponsible slaves who produce kids who become criminals living on welfare in atmosphere of ghetto. Democrats did it to use them for their profit. So disgusting! Scoundrels Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and community organizer became millioners exploiting black slaves.

    • Questions

      When were blacks ever family-oriented?

      • EarlyBird

Why do you hate blacks so much, bigot? Were you raped by a Black Panther? To answer your wretched question:

"When were blacks ever family-oriented?" – Certainly before the Great Society policies which made the man of the house redundant. The only reason blacks even survived post-slavery, and throughout Jim Crow, is because of strong families.

My wife, a black woman, had the greatest, strongest family you could ask for, and it's how she overcame serious poverty to become a very productive and successful woman, you cracker s**thead. And her son is married and has two kids and you couldn't ask for a stronger family. He's ex-military, works for ICE, and his wife is a successful manager at a major national company, well educated, church-going, etc.

So go soak your bigoted head. Better yet, go to prison.

      • Lan Astaslem

They were quite family oriented prior to the 'great society' and all sorts of leftist social engineering policies wherein the gov't became daddy.

        • EarlyBird

Exactly, Lan. And this repulsive bigot, Questions, doesn't seem to be called out for his bigotry.

The left/far left are very indoctrinated. Therefore there is NO NEED to read. Just bulldoze. They now copy on Hamas destroying 3000 year old artifacts. By the way they look VERY professorial!

I am opposed to so-called sex change operations. But I will make an exception for Maddow. Perhaps marinating her brain in testosterone will clear-up her addled cognitive functioning.

These comments tend to reflect the Idea Wars, hurling facts and fond feelings like food at a collegiate cafeteria food fight? Well, it's "interesting" and perhaps therapeutic…

My one beef is: what would the Right actually DO in Education to solve problems? (What could almost ANY intervention do short of a Benevolent and Omnipotent Dictatorship–perhaps the best government of all along with Democracy the worst except all the other wones as Churchill said…)

Maybe I read the article too fast, but it mentions Democratic "establishment" with "boot heels" upon minorities, etc. [eheu alas hmmmm], and only TWO suggestions: reward teacher "performance" (does this mean get learning into difficult-to-teach pupils?) plus vouchers (a good idea but is that ALL?)

I am left with feeling (quite possibly naive fallacious etc., I mean this…) that the Education situation seems unwinnable by any methods Left–or Right (except for as mentioned above, and even then…). Is the Right here falling prey itself to the Left belief in Utopian perfectionism, or even amelioration of tough social issues? TRUE THOUGH WE SHOULD STILL VALIANTLY TRY……….

    • EarlyBird

I blast W. Bush a lot, as I should, but one thing I give him a lot of credit for is understanding that the problem with public education, mostly, is the teachers' unions. No Child Left Behind sure was far, far, from perfect, but it woke people up – even many lefties – to the reality that the teachers' unions are a disaster for our children.

Even the LA Weekly, a liberal, lefty free magazine, has been blasting the teachers' unions for many years now. I credit Republicans pointing that the emperor has no clothes.

Obviously, you don't understand much of anything. You see, pretentious language is not a substitute for substance or knowledge. Read up something that's far from being new:

Oh, let me guess. He asks a serious question and he's a troll.

I did not call him a troll. I called you a troll. Keep projecting.

I always thought that Horowitz's two books that had a claim to being his magnum opus (what's the plural of "opus"?) were "A Point In Time" and "Radical Son." Thank Heaven I have Ms. Maddow to set me straight.

  • Infovoyeur

Is the educational situation, unresolvable? The article critiques liberals as an establishment with boots-on-face stance against minorities. But all that's suggested is (1) rewarding teacher "performance" (meaning, what? getting non-learners to learn?) and (2) using vouchers (admittedly a good option step). But what really can be done about the educational situation–except that we should indeed keep trying…

Another way for conservatives and Republicans to reach out to minorities is to support statehood for Puerto Rico. We need to support the New Progressive Party (the main local party in Puerto Rico supporting statehood for the island. The NPP is named after Theodore Roosevelt's 1912 "Bull Moose" Party and has absolutely nothing to do with Henry Wallace's 1948 isolationist party). About 75% of NPP politicians are affiliated with the mainland Republican Party. Another way for Republicans to get minority support is to follow the GOP "autopsy" report regarding the action plan for the coming years.

I love David but he has it wrong here. I'm not sure there is decisive electoral benefit from "Message: I care" semi-socialism. What 'caring' means to these bedrock Dem constituents is a cash infusion; from where? they care not at all. The only policy narrative that has any hope of succeeding, precisely because it implies the policies with the only hope of succeeding is to declare that it is NOT the proper function of the Federal government to 'care' about the citizenry AT ALL. Rather the Federal govt is properly concerned only with the rights, laws and privileges of citizens as a body and currently it fails in the simple Hippocratic sense; it cannot refrain from doing harm. To claim to stand up to teacher's unions for the brown children sounds nicey-nice but still perpetuates the sick system of government education that produced the unions and if it doesn't simply produce a new and worse union it will produce depredations even more costly. That is the nature of the enormous beast. Close the schools; demolish the schools and stop collecting taxes for their support. I could go on in this vein but you get the picture. It all must come down and it will, if not under control then suddenly in a stark collapse. Either way works for me.

The wonky left as usual totally ignores facts and relies on hype vitriol and sarcasm to be their flag bearers
in the fight against the common sense and anti racist right.
Why bother to read and discuss facts when the rabble can be so easily fooled and roused by spouting these endless mindless diatribes.

Congratulations! You a good little lefty progressive now! Now don't you feel all inclusive and open minded?

  • ganymede

My rightwing friends keep sending me stuff like this and all I have to say is how much pleasure I get out of watching what are probably the last days of the Republican Party. We know how stupid and weak the Democrats have been, but the reality is that the Republicans are infinitely worse. Even before the recent takeover by the extremists, the Republicans have done virtually nothing to help Americans except for the 1%. 2014 is going to be very bad news for rightwingers. Even the white southerners and low-information people are catching on to the rightwing game.

  • Lol

Nice to know you can use a thesaurus. Maybe next time you try and formulate an opinion, you should expand your perspectives and look at both sides of a topic. If not, just let the idea go.

  • Calvinius

It is inconceivable to people like Maddow, for example, that an incompetent, unaccomplished, left-wing ideologue like Barack Obama, whose closest friends and advisers were America-haters Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright, would never have been elected president if he weren’t black — one of the points of “Black Skin Privilege.”

That’s because only a racist like you would have the audacity to claim that Obama is “an incompetent, unaccomplished, left-wing ideologue”. The very notion of “black skin privilege” is psychotic, and the reality is that if Obama were not black he probably would’ve gotten at least 10 million additional votes.
