WASHINGTON — On Thursday night, hundreds of American Jewish leaders visited the White House to celebrate Hanukkah, but many also came with a less celebratory agenda: They were there to deliver a warning to President Barack Obama about the potential nomination of former Sen. Chuck Hagel.
The buzz around the former Republican senator from Nebraska — seen as a top contender to lead the Department of Defense — has Israel supporters worried. Hagel has been a frequent target for Jewish Democratic and Republican groups for more than a decade, even as he is close to Obama, having been a supporter in 2008 and an appointee to the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board.
“He was one of these worst senators in his party in memory when it comes to Israel,” said one Jewish Democratic operative. “It’s a terrible idea.”
Hagel is hardly overtly anti-Israel, but he's been less sympathetic to the Jewish State than most members of Congress in both parties. He was a critic, for instance, of Israel's assault on the Lebanese group Hezbollah in 2006, and his broader worldview — he's a "Republican realist," the political scientist and archenemy of what he calls the "Israel lobby" Stephen Walt wrote Thursday — is unsympathetic to an emotional American engagement in the Middle East.
And with Susan Rice withdrawing her name from contention to be secretary of state, Republicans are gearing up for fight against Hagel, despite his fading ties to their party.
“Republicans will now turn their attention to blocking a potential Hagel nomination,” said one Senate GOP foreign policy aide, “which could become an ideological litmus test on foreign policy for both Republicans and Democrats.”
Complicating the potential selection of Hagel by Obama is that Jewish Democrats, including one of the men to whom Obama would likely turn to assuage the fears of Jewish Americans, is on record raising doubts about him.
"If [Hagel] was taking a policy role, we'd have real concerns," Ira Forman, the Obama campaign’s Jewish Outreach Director and the former executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council, told The Weekly Standard when Hagel was appointed to the intelligence board.
In 2007, when Hagel flirted with a presidential run, the NJDC blasted his credentials on Israel in a fact sheet, noting, among other items, that in 2006, Hagel was “one of only 12 Senators who refused to write the EU asking them to declare Hezbollah a terrorist organization.”
Several attendees at the Hanukkah party said they witnessed or participated in reaching out to administration officials about the potential selection of Hagel, with one attendee saying “he was the talk of the party.”
One Democrat in attendance predicted the fight over Hagel would be “Susan Rice times 10.”

WASHINGTON — On Thursday night, hundreds of American Jewish leaders visited the White House to celebrate Hanukkah, but many also came with a less celebratory agenda: They were there to deliver a warning to President Barack Obama about the potential nomination of former Sen. Chuck Hagel.

after Barack Obama won the presidency, thousands of jubilant
Americans poured into the streets. Morton Klein was not one of them.
The president of the Zionist Organization of America worries an Obama
presidency will spell trouble for Israel. To make his case, Klein
picked up where defeated Republican nominee John McCain left off,
citing what he considers to be ominous associations throughout
Obama's political career.
"It's usually best to determine someone's future actions by their
past actions," said Klein, in San Francisco to speak to ZOA's local
chapter. "So I am deeply troubled by Obama's past associations,
advisers and comments concerning Israel."
Though the president-elect's 20-year connection to controversial
minister Jeremiah Wright gained little traction with voters, Klein
remains disturbed by the alliance.
Beyond Wright's Googled-to-death diatribes against America, Klein
also cites the Chicago minister's calls for the United States to
divest from Israel, for blaming 9/11 on Israel and for honoring Black
Muslim leader Louis Farrakhan.
"Why should this trouble us?" Klein asked. "[Obama] said he was there
every Sunday, listening to those awful anti-Israel speeches. I can
only conclude he is comfortable with these views or sees them as not
beyond the pale. And he never confronted [Wright]. If my rabbi gave
one anti-black sermon I am out of that synagogue."
During the campaign, Obama cut ties with Wright and condemned the
minister's remarks.
Klein further criticized Obama's choice of foreign policy advisers,
which includes Robert Malley and Zbginiew Brzezinski, both of whom he
views as hostile to Israel. He also accuses Obama's Republican
friends in the Senate, Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) and Chuck Hagel (R-
Neb.), as the senators "most hostile to Israel."
Klein reserves some of his harshest criticism for Obama's own
statements, noting the president-elect was quoted in the New York
Times last May as stating that "Hezbollah and Hamas have legitimate
claims," and that he reversed his position on moving the U.S. embassy
in Israel to Jerusalem. (Obama told an AIPAC gathering earlier this
year he supported such a move, then changed his mind days later.)
Putting those cited remarks in context, in that May 16 interview with
New York Times columnist David Brooks , Obama said "Hezbollah is not
a legitimate political party" and that both Hezbollah and Hamas
are "going down a blind alley with violence that weakens their
legitimate claims."
Continued Klein: "So when I look at his past, at his anti-Israel
advisers, his friends, his comfort in an anti-Israel church and his
statements on Hezbollah and saying that Iran is a small country,
[Obama] shows hostility to Israel or comfort with hostility."
In his role as president of the ZOA, Klein is an ardent defender of
Israel. He criticizes Israeli leaders that, in his view, cave under
relentless international pressure to make concessions for peace.
"Until the Palestinian Authority arrests terrorists, ends the
promotion of terror and murder against Jews in their media, sermons
and textbooks, there should be no discussion of a state," Klein
said. "[Israelis] are afraid if they don't make concessions, the
world will turn its back on Israel and undermine its survival. I
disagree. I think if they're tough the world will respect them."
As for Iran and its growing nuclear threat, Klein sees this as an
existential threat and Israel's most formidable challenge. While he
supports international sanctions, he doubts their effectiveness and
feels Israel may have to take military action against Iran.
Klein says his talks with Israeli military experts reassured him
Israel could withstand any Iranian retaliation, and that Israel would
succeed in eradicating Iran's nuclear ambitions. He also doubts any
Arab countries would seize the opportunity to strike at Israel.
Regarding Israel's search for peace with the Palestinians, Klein
remains pessimistic.
"Virtually every poll shows 60 to 90 percent [of Palestinians]
support suicide bombings and over half are against Israel's existence
even if they get a state," he said. "I'm sure there are decent and
fine Arabs, but it's such a minority it's not enough to create
cultural change in that society.
He won't even use the phrase "two-state solution" when forecasting
regional negotiations. "We're already a state," he said, referring to
Israel. "Even the language betrays a lack of understanding."

RJC Releases "Hagel Hearts Sestak" Ad
Tuesday, September 07, 2010 By: RJC Press Office

Washington, D.C. (September 7, 2010) -- The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC)
today released an internet ad entitled, "Hagel Hearts Sestak" which highlights
the recent troubling endorsement of Democrat Joe Sestak for U.S. Senate (PA) by
former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel.
While in the Senate, Chuck Hagel had a troubling record on Israel and Middle
East issues. In fact, he consistently had one of the worst pro-Israel records of
any Senator. Even the National Jewish Democratic Council described Hagel's
record as "questionable" and warned that if he sought the presidency, he would
have "a lot of questions to answer about his commitment to Israel."
The Washington Jewish Week quotes Morris Amitay, a former executive director of
the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, as saying of Hagel, "I would
regard him as the bottom of the class as far as Israel goes."
RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks said, "Chuck Hagel and Joe Sestak have a lot
in common. In fact, it was recently reported that in an interview, Joe Sestak
called Chuck Hagel 'the guy that I most admired in the Senate.' Unfortunately,
they share an attitude and record toward Israel that cause deep concern in the
Jewish community. We will continue to provide the Jewish community in
Pennsylvania and elsewhere with the facts about Joe Sestak and his record."
The new ad can be seen on YouTube and at our SestakIsWrong site.
For more information about Joe Sestak and Chuck Hagel, please visit the RJC web
site.

The Friends of Our Foes
Jewish World Review Sept. 15, 2000 /14 Elul, 5760
Jonathan Tobin
The Arab lobby gears up to punish pro-Israel politicians
in the latest issue of The Washington Report on Middle East Affairs.
The Washington Report is a glossy monthly that serves as the
guidebook to the Arabist lobby in the United States.
The Washington Report specializes in defaming Israel. But far from
being the product of fringe Islamic fundamentalists, it is written
and published by a Washington, D.C., outfit that is staffed by
former U.S. foreign-service officers who haven't stopped hating
Israel even though they are no longer on the federal payroll. As
such, it is a must-read for friends of Israel who want a reliable
indicator of the thinking of the anti-Israel crowd.
One of the most noteworthy features of the magazine is an election-
year report card on Congress that evaluates members of the Senate
and the House on hostility to Israel and related causes. In other
words, if you want to know who is on the list of good guys and bad
guys for Israel, all you have to do is look at the pro-Arab
crowd's "Hall of Fame" and "Hall of Shame."
ANTI-ISRAEL LITMUS TESTS
The 535 House and Senate members were evaluated on, among other
issues, the following: opposition to the use of anti-Semitic
propaganda in the Palestinian media and textbooks; opposition to
asking the Palestinian Authority and Syria about the whereabouts of
missing Israeli soldiers and linking aid to that issue; support for
Palestinian statehood prior to the achievement of a peace agreement;
support for a bill prohibiting the use of intelligence on terrorism
for evaluating immigration cases (as in supporters of Hamas who are
liable to deportation); the signing of a letter opposing commutation
of the sentence of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard; opposition to
moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem; and
opposition to sanctions on rogue nations like Libya and Iraq.
As far as the Arab lobby is concerned, the more members of Congress
opposed anti-Semitism and terrorism and/or were willing to support
Israel, the less The Washington Report liked them.WHO ARE THEIR HEROES?
Chief among the members of The Washington Report's "Hall of Fame" is
Rep. David Bonior, D-Mich. Bonior's animus for Israel is no
surprise, given the large number of Arab-Americans in his Detroit-
area district. It is ominous ...."
"
Among the other anti-Israel House favorites are John Conyers, D-
Mich.; John Dingell, D-Mich.; Amos Houghton, R-New York; Jesse
Jackson Jr., D-Ill.; John Lewis, D-Ga.; Jim McDermott, D-Wash.;
Cynthia McKinney, D-Ga.; Ron Paul, R-Texas; John Sununnu, R-N.H.;
and Maxine Waters, D-Calif.
In the case of Jackson and Sununu (sons of their famous namesakes),
the anti-Israel apple didn't fall far from the tree.
The Washington Report's favorite senators are Spencer Abraham, R-
Mich.; Robert Byrd, D-W.V.; Lincoln Chafee, R-R.I.; Chuck Hagel, R-
Neb.; Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.; Charles Robb, D-Va.; Strom Thurmond, R-
S.C.; and Paul Wellstone, D-Minn.

It is ominous …."
"
Among the other anti-Israel House favorites are John Conyers, D-
Mich.; John Dingell, D-Mich.; Amos Houghton, R-New York; Jesse
Jackson Jr., D-Ill.; John Lewis, D-Ga.; Jim McDermott, D-Wash.;
Cynthia McKinney, D-Ga.; Ron Paul, R-Texas; John Sununnu, R-N.H.;
and Maxine Waters, D-Calif.
In the case of Jackson and Sununu (sons of their famous namesakes),
the anti-Israel apple didn't fall far from the tree.
The Washington Report's favorite senators are Spencer Abraham, R-
Mich.; Robert Byrd, D-W.V.; Lincoln Chafee, R-R.I.; Chuck Hagel, R-
Neb.; Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.; Charles Robb, D-Va.; Strom Thurmond, R-
S.C.; and Paul Wellstone, D-Minn.

In 2009, Hagel signed a letter urging President Obama to begin direct negotiations with Hamas, a U.S. designated terrorist group committed in its Charter to the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews.
In 2008, Hagel was “solely responsible” for blocking an Iran sanctions bill (Seth Colter Walls, ‘Dems Blame Senate GOP For Blocking Iran Sanctions Bill,’ Huffington Post, March 10, 2008).
In a 2006 interview with former Middle East negotiator Aaron David Miller, Hagel said that “the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people” on Capitol Hill (‘Hagel named to intelligence board,’ Jewish Telegraphic Agency, October 29, 2009).
In August 2006, Hagel was one of only 12 Senators who refused to formally call upon the European Union to designate as a terrorist organization Hizballah, which in 1983 murdered 242 U.S. marines in Beirut ('NJDC Criticizes Senators for Refusing to Call on EU to add Hezbollah to List of Terrorist Organizations,' National Jewish Democratic Council press release, August 7, 2006).
In July 2006, at the outbreak of the Lebanon war, Hagel argued against giving Israel the time to break Hizballah, urging instead an immediate ceasefire (‘Key Republican breaks with Bush on Mideast,’ CNN.com, July 31, 2006).
December 2005: Hagel was one of only 27 senators who refused to sign a letter to President Bush urging him to pressure the Palestinian Authority (PA) to ban terrorist groups from participating in Palestinian legislative elections.
June 2004, Hagel refused to sign a letter urging President Bush to highlight Iran's nuclear program at the G-8 summit and was one of only two senators in to vote against renewal of the Libya-Iran sanctions act.
November 2001: Hagel was one of only 11 senators who refused to sign a letter urging President Bush not to meet with the late Yasser Arafat until his forces ended the violence against Israel.
In July 2001, Hagel was one of only two senators to vote against extending the original Iranian sanctions bill.
October 2000: Hagel was one of only four senators who refused to sign a Senate letter in support of Israel.

October 2000: Hagel was one of only 4 Senators who refused to sign a Senate letter in support of Israel.
* November 2001: Hagel was one of only 11 Senators who refused to sign a letter urging President Bush to continue his policy of not meeting with the Yasir Arafat until the Palestinian leader took steps to end the violence against Israel.

* August 2006: Hagel was one of only 12 Senators who refused to write the EU asking them to declare Hezbollah a terrorist organization.
* August 2006: Anti-Israel group CAIR wrote in praise of Hagel, "Potential presidential candidates for 2008, like Hillary Clinton, John McCain, Joe Biden and Newt Gingrich, were falling all over themselves to express their support for Israel.
Wilson's book states "I was the only guest.").9
Wilson ran his company out of the offices of an investment company
called Rock Creek Corporation. Rock Creek was controlled by Mohammed
Alamoudi, whom Wilson had met in 1997 at a reception organized for
the World Bank by Westar Group. Alamoudi was a member of the Saudi-
Ethiopian Alamoudi dynasty, which was heavily invested in the
segments of the African economy Wilson was seeking to penetrate. The
Alamoudi-affiliated company Delta Services—a Swiss subsidiary of the
Saudi company Delta Oil—handled Iraqi oil export contracts in 2000
and 2001 and was revealed in 2003 as a recipient of Iraqi Oil-for-
Food vouchers channeled through Abu Abbas, a Palestinian terrorist
with Iraqi connections. Delta Services also cooperated with
Afghanistan's Taliban regime in a project to build an oil pipeline
from Afghanistan to Pakistan, prior to this project's suspension in
1998. In 1999, Alamoudi was accused by USA Today reporter Jack
Kelley of heading a bank which was being investigated for financing
Al Qaeda. USA Today printed retractions of several details in
Kelley's article in 2004, after another member of the Alamoudi
family—Abdurahman Alamoudi, a prominent American Muslim lobbyist—was
indicted on terror-related charges involving a Libyan-backed
conspiracy to assassinate Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Abdullah.
Abdurahman was ultimately convicted in October 2004 and sentenced to
23 years in prison.12 Under Mohammed Alamoudi's direction, Rock
Creek was chaired by Elias Aburdene, an Arab-American international
banking advisor and lobbyist who had previously advised banks linked
to organized crime and intelligence community figures involved in
the S&L Scam. In 2003 and 2004 Aburdene donated to the Sandhills
Political Action Committee, which was affiliated with Senator Chuck
Hagel, 13 a leading Republican critic of the Bush administration's
Iraq policy.14
While Wilson was pursuing his foreign investment ventures, he also
served as a foreign policy advisor to the 2000 Presidential campaign
of Al Gore. A company the Gore family had a long-term relationship
with, Occidental Petroleum, shared business interests with Alamoudi-
affiliated companies in Africa and the Middle East, and employed as
Vice President for Middle East business Odeh Aburdene,24 who shared
a complex network of relationships with Rock Creek's Elias Aburdene
and Joseph Wilson—notably, all three contributed to Arab-American
Congressional Caucus leader Nick Rahall,25 who supported Muslim
lobbying groups linked to terrorists and opposed military action in
Iraq.26 Abdurahman Alamoudi also contributed to Rahall, and sat on
the steering committee of Arab Americans for Clinton/Gore `96 along
with his associate James Zogby, who later advised Gore's 2000
Presidential campaign.27 Wilson had worked as an aide to Gore from
1985 to 1986 and had developed a friendly relationship with him.
Wilson says Gore was the first person outside the State Department
to contact him expressing support when he was caught in Iraq in the
middle of the diplomatic crisis leading up to the Gulf War. In 1997
Gore recommended Wilson to President Clinton to help him plan a trip
to Africa. When Wilson began publicly opposing Bush's Iraq policy in
2002, Gore was still considered a potential candidate in the 2004
election. Gore's speeches were then being sponsored by the antiwar
group Moveon.org, which Wilson would support in September 2003 in an
attempt to petition Congress against appropriating funds for Iraq

An op-ed by longtime Arutz Sheva contributor Mark Langfan has been picked up by Breitbart News.
Langfan’s op-ed, which was posted to Arutz Sheva on Saturday, exposed that former Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE), President Barack Obama’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, co-authored a 2009 report that called for U.S. troops to lead a peacekeeping force that would patrol the future borders between Israel and a Palestinian state.
The report also suggested that peace could be imposed from outside by the U.S., describing arguments to the contrary as “invalid.” Breitbart published an article on the report Sunday, noting that it was previously referenced in Arutz Sheva.
The report, co-authored by Hagel with Carter administration Secretary of State Zbigniew Brzezinski and former George H.W. Bush adviser Brent Scowcroft, among others, was produced in an effort to influence Obama administration policy in the president’s first term.
It called upon the new president to make resolving the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) a top priority “early in his presidency” and to override “certain domestic constituencies.”
The report called for the U.S. military to be deployed as part of its suggested plan for peace, which calls for a “non-militarized Palestinian state, together with security mechanisms that address Israeli concerns while respecting Palestinian sovereignty, and a U.S.- led multinational force to ensure a peaceful transitional security period. This coalition peacekeeping structure, under UN mandate, would feature American leadership of a NATO force supplemented by Jordanians, Egyptians and Israelis. We can envision a five-year, renewable mandate with the objective of achieving full Palestinian domination of security affairs on the Palestine side of the line within 15 years.”
In addition, the report called for the U.S. to encourage Israeli-Syrian peace negotiations, and to take a “more pragmatic approach” to the Hamas terror organization in control of Gaza.
Breitbart noted that elements of the report seem to have found their way into President Obama’s policy.

Hagel is also a board of directors member of both the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and the Ploughshares Fund. Ploughshares gives financial support to a number of organizations sympathetic to the theocratic regime of Iran and hostile to Israel. One such group is the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), the Iranian regime’s principal lobbyist in the United States. NIAC has a strong relationship with the Obama administration, as indicated by Andrew C.
