Why is a P.L.O. Flag Hoisted in D.C.?

Almost immediately following his reelection as president, and just weeks before his inauguration, Barrack Hussein Obama sent a clear message as to his intentions regarding the Middle East and the Jewish state.  He nominated a national security team consisting of U.S. Senator John Kerry (D-MA) as Secretary of State, former U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) as Secretary of Defense, and John Brennan to head the CIA.  These figures are known for their various degrees of hostility to the Jewish state, and their partiality towards and appeasement of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.  But if that was not enough, the Obama administration granted in 2011 permission to the Palestinian Liberation Organization to fly their flag in America’s capital – Washington, DC.

Mahmoud Abbas, chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (P.L.O.), and President of the Palestinian Authority, in defiance of the U.S. and President Obama, has broken off direct negotiations with Israel, and instead sought to unilaterally obtain Palestinian statehood recognition from the United Nations.

The irony is that on one hand, the Obama administration through its Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, chided the Palestinians on the eve of the UN vote on November 28, 2012, that the “path to a two-state solution that fulfills the aspirations of the Palestinian people is through Jerusalem and Ramallah, not New York.”  Yet, on the other hand, it allowed the Palestinians to assert their nationhood through their flag hoisted in the U.S. capital.

P.L.O. officials have been fast at work in Washington for years now, to permit their flag to fly in the U.S. capital, and in August 2011, the State Department gave its approval, reclassifying the P.L.O. mission as a general delegation.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), chairperson of the House Committee of Foreign Affairs, objected to the P.L.O flag being flown, opining that “Raising this flag in DC is part of the Palestinian leadership’s scheme to manipulate international acceptance and diplomatic recognition of a yet-to-be-created Palestinian state, while refusing to directly negotiate with Israel, or accept the existence of Israel as a democratic, Jewish state.”

The P.L.O. never altered its 1968 charter despite promises made to former President Bill Clinton as part of the Oslo Accords deal. The charter calls for the elimination of the Jewish State through armed struggle.  This makes the issue of the Palestinian flag flying in Washington more than symbolism.  It conveys the clear message that the Obama administration is not only accepting the legitimacy of the P.L.O., it honors it.

The unaltered P.L.O. charter specified in Article 7 that “It is a national duty to bring up individual Palestinians in an Arab revolutionary manner. All means of information and education must be adopted in order to acquaint the Palestinian with his country in the most profound manner, both spiritual and material, that is possible. He must be prepared for the armed struggle and ready to sacrifice his wealth and his life in order to win backs his homeland and bring about its liberation.”

Article 9 considers “Armed struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine. [Thus it is the overall strategy, not merely a tactical phase]. The Palestinian Arab people assert their absolute determination and resolution to continue their armed struggle and to work for an armed popular revolution for the liberation of their county and their return to it. They also assert their right to normal life in Palestine and to exercise their right to self-determination and sovereignty over it.”

Article 10, asserts that “Commando action constitutes the nucleus of the Palestinian popular liberation war. This requires its escalation, comprehensiveness, and the mobilization of all the Palestinian popular and educational efforts and their organization and involvement in the armed Palestinian revolution.  It also requires the achieving of unity for the national (watani) struggle among the different groupings of the Palestinian people, and between the Palestinian people and the Arab masses, so as to secure the continuation of the revolution, its escalation, and victory.”

Article 17: “The partitioning of Palestine, which took place in 1947, and the establishment of Israel are illegal and null and void, regardless of the loss of time, because they were contrary to the will of the Palestinian people and its natural right to its homeland, and were in violation of the basic principles embodied in the Charter of the United Nations, foremost among which is the right to self-determination.”

Article 19: “Zionism is a colonialist movement in its inception, aggressive and expansionist in its goal, racist in its configurations, and fascist in its means and aims. Israel, in its capacity as the spearhead of this destructive movement and as the pillar of colonialism, is a permanent source of tension and turmoil in the Middle East, in particular, and to the international community in general. Because of this, the people of Palestine are worthy of the support and sustenance of the community of nations.”

Article 20: “The causes of peace and security and the requirements of right and justice demand from all nations, in order to safeguard true relationships among peoples and to maintain the loyalty of citizens to their homeland, that they consider Zionism an illegal movement and outlaw its presence and activities.”

The U.S. Congress Chapter 61- Anti-Terrorism-P.L.O. declared that:

1. The Palestine Liberation Organization (hereafter in this chapter referred to as the PLO) was directly responsible for the murder of an American citizen on the Achille Lauro cruise liner in 1985, and members of the PLO’s Executive Committee is under indictment in the U.S. for the murder of that American citizen.

2. The head of the PLO has been implicated in the murder of the U.S. ambassador overseas.

3.  The PLO and its constituent groups have taken credit for, and been implicated in, the murder of dozens of American citizens abroad.

4. The PLO covenant specifically states that “Armed Struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine, thus it is an overall strategy, not merely a tactical phase.”

5. The PLO rededicated itself to the “continuing struggle in all armed forms” at the Palestine National Council meeting in April 1987.

6. The Attorney General has stated that “various elements of the PLO and its allies and affiliates are in the thick of terror.”

Therefore, the U.S. Congress determines that the PLO and its affiliates are a terrorist organization and a threat to the interests of the U.S., its allies, and to international law, and should not benefit from operating in the U.S.

The U.S. Congress reaction to the Palestinian UN move on November 29, 2012, was to send President Obama a letter on December 21, 2012, signed by 231 members along with the chairman and ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee declaring “We believe that the U.S. must react strongly to the Palestinian leadership failure to uphold its obligations.”  Members of Congress suggested that the U.S., at a minimum, should close the P.L.O. offices in Washington.

President Obama’s national security nominees notwithstanding, his approval of the PLO flag flying in the nation’s capital is an affront to peace and justice.

What is really interesting–to me at least–was that the portion of the Middle East set aside for the palistine (sp) is just a little chunk of of the modern State of Isreal and a VERY large chunk of Jordan–yet Jorden refuses to give even a single plot of ground for their "brothers" in Palistine.

And nobody says anything about it.

The PA is poisoning its children against Israel
Following the murderous terrorist attack on Kibbutz Metzer in 2002, the PLO cold-bloodedly stated on its official website, "We will continue to strike in any place, targeting their children as well." Five innocent Israelis, including a mother and her two little boys, were butchered in that attack, all of them, Fatah said, "Zionist colonizers" killed in a "qualitative operation in the settlement of Metzer."

Here's how the official Palestinian Authority newspaper Al-Hayat al-Jadida headlined its coverage: "Five Israelis killed in an attack on the settlement Metzer." The report continued, "A Palestinian infiltrated the settlement Metzer and opened fire on the settlers." It is not well known that the Palestinian press frequently refers to towns in Israel, such as Holon and Kiryat Shmona, as "settlements." Besides implying that all of Israel is an illegitimate colonial outpost, such references clearly are brought to justify the killings and distinguish them from terrorism.
After the Tel Aviv massacre on January 12th 2003, where 2 Palestinian homicide bombers massacred 23 Israeli civilians. The PLO web site posted a statement — celebrating the attacks:
"With faith in the calling of holy jihad," it said, "two suicide attackers . . . succeeded this evening to infiltrate the Zionist roadblocks and to enter the heart of . . . Tel Aviv and carried out two consecutive suicide attacks… These suicide attacks caused a large number of fatalities and casualties in the center of the Zionist occupation of our land. We swear before our people that additional suicide operations will occur."
That is a view with which much of Arab opinion concurs. ArabicNews.com, for example, datelined its story on the Tel Aviv attack "Palestine-Israel," and reported that the bombings had killed "23 Israeli settlers."
One day after the Ramallah lynching of two Israelis, Ahmad Abu Halabiya, a member of the PA-appointed Fatwa Council, called on listeners to find and butcher Jews “no matter where they are, in any country. Fight them, wherever you are. Wherever you meet them, kill them.”
Full destruction of Israel is “the only red line” 8/25/11
A cartoon in the official PA daily newspaper Al Hayat al Jadida:
    As PMW writes:
The Palestinian Authority is telling its people that peace with Israel is not a goal. Instead, the PA says that all of Israel is “Palestine,” and that no compromise is acceptable because this principle is “the only red line.” This message was expressed by the regular cartoonist, Muhammad Sabaaneh, in the official PA daily.
Nothing gets printed in Al Hayat al Jadida if it is not approved by the PLO and its subsidiary the Palestinian Authority. And the PLO logo has a very similar map:
One week after the Dolphinarium bombing on June 1, 2001 in Tel Aviv in which 21 people, mainly young girls, were killed, PA television carried the sermon of Sheik Ibrahim Al-Madhi. He said: “Blessings to whoever waged Jihad for the sake of Allah; blessings to whoever raided for the sake of Allah; blessings to whoever put a belt of explosives on his body or on his sons’ and plunged into the midst of the Jews, crying ‘Allahu Akbar…’
Ahmed Qurei says Israel has no history in Jerusalem. Jewish Temples never existed, and Israel has been working to “invent” a Jewish connection to Jerusalem
Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Madi, a Palestinian Authority religious leader: “We will blow them up in Hadera, we will blow them up in Tel-Aviv”
“We will blow them up in Hadera, we will blow them up in Tel-Aviv and in Netanya… We will fight against them and rule over them until the Jew will hide behind the trees and stones and the tree and stone will say: ‘Moslem! Servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, kill him’. We will enter Jerusalem as conquerors, and Jaffa as conquerors, and Haifa as conquerors and Ashkelon as conquerors….”

Palmediawatch has shown what barbariansIsrael is dealing with.

    Glorifying terrorists and terror
Palestinian society’s habitual glorification of terrorists as heroes and role models is one of its most effective means of promoting terror. In honoring the worst killers, the PA is simultaneously giving approval to murder and enticing future terrorists with assurances of glory and honor if they succeed in killing. Terror and murder become the Palestinian’s ticket to fame, honor and glory.

The terrorists honored most highly amongst Palestinian society are those who have killed the greatest number. Abd Al-Baset Udeh, killer of 30 at the Passover Seder massacre, had a soccer tournament for 14-year-olds named for him. His brother was honored with distributing the trophies. Dalal Mughrabi, terrorist bus hijacker (led the most lethal terror attack in Israel’s history in 1978, when she and other terrorists killed 37 civilians, 12 of them children) has had summer camps, schools, graduation ceremonies and sporting events named for her, as well as many TV documentaries honoring her. Palestinian newspapers also frequently glorify Mughrabi, as in the Al-Ayyam article which described Mughrabi as writing "the most glorious page of heroism in the history of the Palestinian struggle. [Aug. 2, 2009]. Thaer Hammad, who as a lone gunman murdered 10 Israelis in 2002, was glorified by the official PA daily as “the hero of the Intifada."

This adulation of the worst terrorists and praise for their heroism reflects the policy of the leadership of the Palestinian Authority. This video shows PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, issuing “greetings of honour and esteem” to mass murderers, whom he publicly names, one by one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embed

More proof how Joseph Puder is correct.
Palestinian television still glorifies terror attacks against Israel.
Incitement against Israel persists in Palestinian television and radio broadcasts, where places such a Haifa and Tel Aviv are considered to be part of 'occupied Palestine.'
    Avi Issacharoff
    Feb.19, 2012

At certain moments, while watching a scene from a program broadcast by Palestinian television on October 25 of last year, it is difficult to believe that this is the official television channel of the Palestinian Authority and the PLO, and not that of Hamas or the Islamic Jihad.

And yet, the program in question features a "field report" by Palestinian television from Tulkarem, in order to relate the wonders of the master terrorist Abbas a-Said, who is jailed in Israel and was sentenced to 35 life sentences.

This is a man who was considered at the beginning of the previous decade the head of the military wing of Hamas in the town, and responsible for two of the harshest suicide bombings Israel has ever known, including the attack on the Park Hotel in Netanya and on the night of the Passover Seder in 2002.

The reporter, who works at a program dedicated to the families of prisoners, did not spare the superlatives: "We are outside the home of the warrior hero, the commander, the lion of the prison, Abbas a-Said."

And the play continues. The reporter turns to two freed women prisoners sitting in the house of a-Said and asks them: "How do you feel now that you are sitting in the house of the leader, the hero, the defeater of the enemy, the vanquisher of the prison and the lion of the investigation?"

One of them, Dia al-Jiosi, responds that a-Said was a role model "for us." Later the reporter goes out to interview the neighbors of the "hero." One of them explains that a-Said is "the crown on our head that brought the redemption to the nation, without a doubt he made us proud," said the neighbor.

Apparently, this example is not atypical on official Palestinian TV, even in the age of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' rule. Nan Jacques Zilberdik, an analyst at Palestinian Media Watch, explains that on Palestinian TV "there is no message of peace with Israel."

Zilberdik, who was born in Denmark, recently published, together with PMW Director Itamar Marcus a book called Deception, which monitors Palestinian media from one year beginning May 2010, with an emphasis on television broadcasts. The book's findings, in some cases, trigger concern, in most others nausea.

Palestinian Media Watch, it should be noted, was recently mentioned as a right-leaning group which supplies the Prime Minister's Office information on Palestinian media. However, a closer look at both the book's findings and the broadcasts themselves reveals that, regardless of political inclination, the heads of Palestinian television are far from reaching out with a message of peace.

  • Ken Kelso

    Part 2 of article.

"There's no education toward peace," said Zilberdik in a conversation with Haaretz.

"The new Palestinian generation, who watches Palestinian television, does not hear that Tel Aviv or Ashkelon are Israeli cities. It hears about occupied cities that must be liberated. There is no discourse on compromise or concessions. In the Israeli media, on the other hand, one does see such discourse."

Zilberdik said that the criteria according to which the Palestinian television programs were examined were those that the Palestinian Authority agreed to in the past: An end to violence, recognition of Israel, and acceptance of signed agreements.

"For example, we found in the Palestinian Authority's Zayzafuna magazine, a story about a young girl who meets four characters – the fourth is Adolf Hitler. He explains to her what is the killing of Jews and what needs to be done, but there isn't even a comment on behalf of the editorial staff on who is Hitler and what he is responsible for.

Zilberdik agreed that the content of the Palestinian television programs did change from the even darker days of the beginning of last decade, when there was overt incitement and calls for suicide attacks and violence.

"Today there is no incitement to killing Jews, but they do praise those who carry out terror attacks," she said.

The recurring example is the female terrorist Dalal Mughrabi, who turned into a symbol in the Palestinian media, for reasons that aren't clear. Mughrabi, who murdered 37 Israelis in a 1978 attack that became known as the Coastal Road Massacre, is mentioned time and again in Palestinian television as a hero.

For example, Palestinian television marked the birthday of Yasser Arafat on August 4, 2010, and broadcast several songs that praised Mughrabi. About a month afterward, in an official Fatah event broadcast on Palestinian television, band by the name of Al-Ashkin (“The Oppressed” in Arabic) appeared singing songs praising the way in which the Palestinians “attacked the Zionists with weapons.” The band sang “finger on the trigger” loudly.

The person responsible on for Palestinian television and radio broadcasts is Yasser Abed Rabo, one of the most well known members of the Palestinian “peace camp.” Abed Rabo stands behind the Geneva Initiative, and was chastised many times by Palestinians due to his willingness to make exaggerated concessions. And maybe from this point it is difficult to explain this phenomenon and that which takes place on Palestinian television. In fact, it is the PLO station, which is ostensibly supposed to support the idea of “two states,” that continuously praises terrorists that killed Israelis. Another problem that arises from the viewing of the broadcasts is the utter disregard for the existence of the State of Israel. Time after time, and especially on shows targeted at teenagers, the hosts, singers or guests say that cities such as Acre, Haifa, Lod, Ramle and even Tel Aviv are part of occupied Palestine. For instance, on August 25, 2010, the host of a children’s television show says that Lod, Haifa and Acre are occupied cities. In June of the same year, another host whom is speaking with the son of a prisoner asks him “the Jews are our enemies, right?” Suffice it to say that she refers to Israeli soldiers with much harsher words – “animals.” And in October 2010, the station takes pains to interview several Jordanian experts on the Middle East who explain that “the Jews are hated everywhere they have been due to their love of money.”

Zilberdik claims that the incitement in the Palestinian media is not revealed in the Israeli media, and certainly not in the international media. “The international community is not aware of the glorification of terrorists or Holocaust denial in the Palestinian media. It is easier to check whether there is building in the settlements than it is to track incitement on the side of the Palestinians. I do not identify with the right-wing in terms of politics. When I arrived in Israel from Denmark I voted for Meretz. But it is impossible to ignore what is happening in the Palestinian media. There is no education toward peace or even a discussion of such issues. The only thing that is heard is that they “will not give up.” That is all.”

Abed Rabo’s refused to respond to the allegations, as did journalists who work for Palestinian television.
