Mr. Billingsley has been kind in his praise for Canada's recent commendable counter-terrorist actions - but it is clear that we F##ked up BIG TIME with Ressam. It was an attentive U.S Board Agent who did his job properly that saved America from the possibility of another disaster.

I suppose we should take some comfort from the thought that Canada DID "clean-up" it's act when these outrageous shortcomings were revealed by some heavy introspection. So it is possible to drive reform (or perhaps just wake up the services). But I hope we have not sacrificed too many personal liberties in the process. [Did you read that CSIS?]

The would-be pressure cooker bombers went to court today. Uh-oh. The defense has asked for a delay (he is painting the accused as victims of a sting operation, what the RCMP call "Mr. Big", and what the defense alleges is unlawful entrapment.) The judge has agreed to the delay; the trial resumes in August. (There was a very recent case of police using a Mr. Big operation to get a teenage suspect to confess to a murder -- the judge "stayed" the proceedings, ie, the judge believed the teen had been trapped by the police, so the teen walked.)

The media reported that the arrests of the would-be Via rail terrorists was the result of a joint international operation, with assistance of the FBI. A third Via rail terrorist was arrested in the United States. (Vic Toews, public safety minister, was annoyed to discover that one of the accused terrorists had a criminal record -- uttering threats and multiple counts of fraud -- yet the accused terrorist was able to obtain a PARDON, and then become a legal resident of Canada.)
With respect to the Victoria wanna-be pressure cooker bombers, some have openly wondered if the alert to authorities came about through some NSA program, since one of the alleged perps would post to bulletin boards, etc). But, this, at the moment is speculation. (Might also add, btw, that there have been a number of non-apprehended terrorist Canadians, who mount attacks overseas -- Bulgaria, Somalia, Algeria, etc.)

Someone has to find out just who those "nice Muslims" were that converted John Nuttall and Amanda Korody to Islam while John and Amanda were busy shooting heroin on the street. Those radical tapes they were listening to that caused Amanda to start wearing a burqa had to come from somewhere. CSIS (Canada's equivalent to the CIA) should be all over this.
