"So, "antithesis?" Yeah, maybe in the same perfect world the Marxists speak of. But not in the historical one we live in. That's the same kind of reflexive rhetoric that irritates just as much as a social justice plea."

Capitalism is not a total system of governance. It's a description of how the engine can work best in free enterprise. Don't attack the engine in the name of justice. Make rational arguments that show you understand how to deliver what you promise without cannibalizing those who produced what you want to take.

I can make a rational argument in support of some welfare programs without attacking capitalism as the culprit. Leftists don't make those kinds of rational arguments because they have no idea how wealth is actually created. And they are totally unaware of these blind spots. That's where this unresolvable social tension comes from. Well, the solution is for them to learn things that they refuse to consider.

"The "antithesis of capitalism?" Really?"

It's the antithesis of free enterprise capitalism.

"Because capitalism does not exist in a vacuum, and because society both costs money and requires governance, capitalism and government must "play together." Nothing wrong with that."

Paying taxes is not crony-capitalism. Neither is winning a bid from the government when (obviously) funded by that capital (taxes). Cronyism is when you are awarded a bid or transaction due to connections rather than on objective performance merits.

"But the close collusion of government and private interests is old as the hills has not only led to "too big to fail" in more ways than just the financial industry but also the usual pork, $100 hammers, Google and the CIA, and (Eisenhower and I might argue) even unnecessary wars. Article mentions Wal-Mart. Yes, Wal-Mart is successful, a huge employer, and their prices make a lot of stuff affordable to families. But its employees collect food stamps, draw Medicaid and housing on taxpayer dime, while the Walton family sits on $90+ billion. Are you telling me that's just as it should be?"

That's the entire point. The flaws are not with capitalism, the flaws can be traced to corruption and socialist policies.

By the way, the ideal system won't make everyone equally happy. Nothing can do that. The ideal system according to Western values is to create as much value as possible, to share according to merit and freely negotiated transactions.

Anything else is charity and charity is not about rights or obligations. And capitalism does not create poor people. Claiming that it does this was just originally a negotiating tactic except for a few lunatics that believed their own BS.

If you want to have safety nets for society and so forth, make those arguments rationally rather than using communist rhetoric that attacks the engine that allows us to even consider the charity projects under proposal. Don't naively support positions that are economic equivalents of cannibalism.

Orwell's "Animal House:" awesome!!!

This is a great series but let me offer some criticism.

"But if a corporation is enriching itself through the political process, that does nothing to discredit capitalism, for, as we have already said, such political favoritism constitutes cronyism and is the
antithesis of capitalism."

The "antithesis of capitalism?" Really?

Because capitalism does not exist in a vacuum, and because society both costs money and requires governance, capitalism and government must "play together." Nothing wrong with that.

Nor is there is anything wrong with having the resources or petitioning the government to look out for your interests. Capitalists have a lot of skin in the game. That's as should be.

The growth of Big Business with Big Government is no coincidence. I've always said the best conservative argument I've ever heard is that making government smaller actually reduces the incentive for corruption/collusion. But that is a hard one to get across.

Maybe what we should be rooting for is a revamped electoral system, and new set of rules for the elected.
