I know of know one in the private sector that has a pension of any kind. Years ago companies dumped their pensions and switched to 401(k)'s to show their intent of providing a pension, while not really doing so. Markets change, and companies adapt. Ok, today I am responsible for my own retirement (as it should be).

Why are governments exempt from economic reality? Government pensions of any kind are a fraud similar to social security. I never understood why government employees are deemed to be worthy of better benefits than the private sector.

Time for a change: take whatever funds are in the pensions, and allocate them to the participants prorata based on years of service. Then shut the pensions down. Now the individuals got something for their years of service, and they can roll the monies in to an IRA.

States, cities and school districts that do this will have a brighter future for having faced reality today.
