Off With a Bang: Assault on Second Amendment Begins

President Obama is planning an aggressive, in-your-face, blitzkrieg-style campaign against Americans’ fundamental Second Amendment right to self-defense.

After a madman murdered 26 people including 20 young schoolchildren last month at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Obama initially urged a reinstatement of the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban. The demonstrably useless law lapsed in 2004 and had no detectable impact on crime. It was designed to cater to big-city liberals and their irrational fear of firearms.

But the Obama administration’s plans to assault the Bill of Rights grew more ambitious over the Christmas holidays. The administration has now had an opportunity to brainstorm more extensively with the left-wing gun-grabbing lobby, which is heavily financed by radical financier George Soros.

The president is hoping to use the bloody Newtown massacre to impose sweeping new restrictions on firearms and to create a massive new database to track and spy on law-abiding gun owners. Americans are wise to be wary of such proposals. Governments the world over have used such databases time and time again to crack down on internal dissent, lay the groundwork for gun confiscation, and clear the way for genocidal slaughter.

Citing multiple sources “involved in the administration’s discussions,” the Washington Post reports that the Obama White House is now “weighing a far broader and more comprehensive approach to curbing the nation’s gun violence than simply reinstating an expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition.”

According to the newspaper:

A working group led by Vice President [Joe] Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors…

Vice President Biden “guaranteed” Boston Mayor Thomas Menino that President Obama would push through sweeping firearms restrictions before February.

“He said, ‘Tommy, I guarantee you, we’ll get it done by the end of January,’” Menino said, according to the Boston Herald. “They’re going to get it done.”

Obama may intend to bribe and blackmail businesses in order to win their support for his assault on law-abiding gun owners, the Post article suggests.

“[T]he White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses,” the article stated.

The Obama White House is coordinating its strategy with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an outspoken enemy of the Second Amendment. Bloomberg co-founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns with Boston’s Menino.

Biden’s working group is reportedly gearing up to present a package of recommendations to the president soon. After that the Community Organizer-in-Chief intends to head up a public-relations campaign to further inflame the public before the passions generated by the Newtown murders cool.

“They are very clearly committed to looking at this issue comprehensively,” said Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which is participating in Biden’s group.

Despite ceaseless cheerleading by their allies in the mainstream media, leftists probably won’t be able to shoot holes in the Second Amendment easily.

Lawmakers from both parties are opposed to further crackdowns on the ownership of guns, which author David B. Kopel notes are already “the most severely regulated consumer product in the United States — the only product for which FBI permission is required for every single sale.”

Newly sworn-in Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said gun control proposals now being discussed –including a plan by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to create a national gun registry– are unconstitutional. The federal government doesn’t have “any business having a list of law-abiding citizens” who choose to exercise their right to keep and bear arms, he said.

After Newtown “within minutes, we saw politicians run out and try to exploit this tragedy, try to push their political agenda of gun control,” Cruz told “Fox News Sunday.”

What happened in Newtown is “a tragedy, but it’s not a tragedy that should be answered by restricting the constitutional rights of all Americans.”

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) also cautioned against taking aim at gun owners’ rights.

“I think you need to put everything on the table, but what I hear from the administration — and if the Washington Post is to be believed — that’s way, way in extreme of what I think is necessary or even should be talked about. And it’s not going to pass,” the new freshman senator said on a Sunday TV talk show.

Heitkamp said mental health-related proposals have to be part of any package aimed at reducing violent crime.

“Let’s start addressing the problem. And to me, one of the issues that I think comes — screams out of this is the issue of mental health and the care for the mentally ill in our country, especially the dangerously mentally ill. And so we need to have a broad discussion before we start talking about gun control,” she said.

Obama’s sudden reversal on gun rights shouldn’t come as a surprise. Obama has a long anti-gun track record that he carefully distanced himself from when he began running for the presidency. In his academic days he told a colleague: “I don’t believe people should be able to own guns.”

As a candidate for state office in 1996, Obama promised to ban “the manufacture, sale & possession of handguns.” Seeking his U.S. Senate seat in 2004, Obama advocated blocking citizens nationwide from receiving concealed-carry permits.

This documented antipathy toward Second Amendment rights stands in stark contrast to Obama’s statements on the presidential campaign trail in 2008 when he promised to respect Americans’ individual right to bear arms.

“When you all go home and you’re talking to your buddies and you say, ah ‘He wants to take my gun away.’ You’ve heard it here, I’m on television so everybody knows it. I believe in the Second Amendment. I believe in people’s lawful right to bear arms. I will not take your shotgun away. I will not take your rifle away. I won’t take your handgun away.”

But that was before the Newtown opportunity came along. Obama never allows a gut-wrenching crisis to go to waste.

Idiots or traitors: take your pick.

Criminals, by definition, don't obey the law. Enabling criminals, should be criminal.

    • kafir4life

I don't understand why it's an either / or. Can't they be both?

      • RedWhiteAndJew

Good point. However, my brain is conditioned to see the word "OR" in Boolean terms. A Boolean OR is true if either or both conditions are true.

It's my geek cross to bear. x-(:-)

Something cannot be both a right and a privilege. If it is a privilege it is granted by the power holder (king, president, dictator); if it is a right is it granted by God. You've never had a king (yet) but the colonists did. You've never had a dictator yet but the Germans and the Italians did. So did the Russians.

    • Deep Space

Funny you should say that because just this AM I read many comments from ostensibly right wing individuals in the Washington Times asserting how they believed the new healthcare law was 'unconstitutional' and they would do what they could to break it. So are they criminals?

      • RedWhiteAndJew

We're talking about a right which is enumerated in the Bill of Rights. Try to keep up.

        • Bär Jude

          I could not agree more.

      • Gitfiddle

Well any law breaker is thus some kind of crime-committer (aren't they?). Think about it. Health care has been wrought with fraud for decades. Prosecutors routinely deny you your right to a jury trial (were you unaware of this?) You are not allowed to hold prayer meetings. The police can search your car and your house without a warrant and seize things and prosecute you (called a "fishing trip"). It is unlawful to peacably assemble and you cannot operate a radio station or a newspaper.

      All of the above!

You lefties think it would be great to take away conservative first amendment rights just because you dont like Rush, or Savage. You lefties want to take away the second amendment because you think with emotion rather than your brain. But what happens when your guy goes off the rails and starts doing things you dont approve? Now you have no recourse because you just let them decide who has the right to speak and you cant fight back because you have to guns.

The second amendment was not meant for hunting or mearly protection from a burgler. It was meant to give the people the ability to fight back against a tyrannical government

    • Deep Space

Good luck with that. I'm not in favor of tyranny or "lefties" in general but you backyard revolutionaries need to get back to your Superduties and your barbeques and maybe spend less time watching consipiracy theory movies and TV shows.

Check your space suit oxygen supply, Deep Space. I don't think enough is getting to your brain.

        It's not fine.

Conspiracies are part and parcel of the liberal elite. Do try again and this time, try not to let your ignorance of reality show.

    • tagalog

Lefties want to restrict firearms and firearms ownership until the right-wingers are in charge; at that point, they begin to have assassination fantasies and are less willing to regulate guns.

  • leeward

Do some research, where guns have been banned like england for example they had 2.2 million violent crimes last year. Guns are illegal therre. The us with 5 times the amount of population had 1.2 million. *0-90percent of gun crimes in the us (depending on city and state) are committed by prior convicted felons.
In states (34 of them) that have adopted shall issue laws for carry permits, the gun owners numbers have continued to grow, while crime continues to drop. they arent proposing these laws to curb crime, because anyone who can read can look up the FBI crime statistics and realize gun control doesnt curb crime; they are doing this to curb citizens, freedom and be a police state, the perfect liberal society.

  • Demetrius M

I'll give up my firearms when Obama/Pelosi etc. instruct their SS guards to do the same.

Research definition of: "INFRINGE", "INFRINGED". I suspect the Library of Congress has a set of Dictionaries ranging in age from, say, 1750 to 2013. Then go read the 2nd Amendment!

  • Wideband

Look up the Bath School disaster. 45 people killed including 38 school children. Not a shot fired. Banning guns will not stop madmen.

  • jtrolla

It's clear. Confiscation is their real intention.

  • Alex Kovnat

One aspect of proposed new firearms regulations that makes me sick to my stomach, is the proposal to increase the penalty for carrying firearms into or near a school. This is typical liberal intellectual dogma. If any of the teachers at Sandy Hook had been armed with a compact concealed carry handgun, perhaps she could have taken that sick demented guy out before he killed all those children.

When you're dealing with 6 year old children in a Sandy Hook-like situation, killing them is easy enough with a K-Bar combat knife. All a sick, twisted guy has to do, once he gets past security and invades a classroom, is to take out the teacher first, then lock the door so the school's own defenses now work in favor of the attacker. If, once the teacher is dead, the only human beings in that room (in addition to the attacker) are young children, its possible said attacker could stab them all to death. Frankly, it wouldn't hurt if one day, a sick guy like the Sandy Hook shooter were to be brought down by a teacher or even (heaven forbid) a child with an (illegal!) handgun.

    • Mark

A few years ago somewhere in the South when a student started firing at a school, a male member of the faculty had a handgun in his car. To comply with the "gun free" mandates of no guns on school property or within so many hundreds of feet, the faculty member parked his car well off of school property — at least a half a mile. So when the incident started he had to run to his car and run back to the school, a task that took several minutes for the over one mile "jaunt".. When arriving at the school, he drew down on the perp and forced him to the ground. "When seconds count, the Police are just minutes away."

      • tagalog

Just a couple of days ago, a shooter shot two people and entered a movie theater where he was stopped by a police woman who was armed. Had the shooter not been stopped, he would at least have emptied the rest of his magazine into the movie-going crowd. See

The MSM have not published this story about an armed hero stopping yet another armed maniac bent on havoc. I wonder why not? Could it be that it interferes with the gun control narrative presently dominating the culture?

    • Fritz

Like somehow an increased penalty on a fabricated crime is going to convince someone hell bent on committing mass murder not to commit mass murder? The sort of incident you describe with a knife wielding maniac occurred in China roughly around the same time as the Sandy Hook shooting, no guns there but still plenty of terror and mayhem. As any emergency room surgeon will tell you knife wounds are far worse to deal with, and traumatizing to the victim, then bullet wounds.

  • drivesguy

There are roughly 2 million legitimate gun owners in this country. The 1st snipers under George Washington were frontiersman hunters. These sharp shooters were used by Washington to pick off British Army Officers over long distances. Obama may be smart politically, buy he lacks a vital key mental function–common sense. Should the Feds begin a concerted campaign to confiscate personal firearms, we will have a second American Revolution.

    • Drakken

I hate to correct you my friend but there are over 175 million gun owners in the US and roughly 350 million arms.

      • @vadum

Perhaps drivesguy is not writing from the USA.

  • tagalog

What is "high capacity ammunition?" Is it ammo that you can shoot more than once without reloading the cartridge casing with propellant, bullet, and primer? I gotta get me some of that.

Yet another discussion of the gun control issue by those who know little or nothing about guns.

I don't suppose the Obama administration has planned any legislation to insure the commitment of the disturbed for observation and classification as to potential for danger while they're talking about all these draconian steps for regulating firearms, has it?

Oh wait, involuntary commitment of a few thousand disturbed and potentially dangerous people for 48 or 72 hours for observation would be a violation of their Fifth Amendment rights, right? Better we take away the Second Amendment rights of 350 million law-abiding Americans permanently, that's the ticket.

  • Deerknocker

Perhaps it is time for a million man concealed carry march on Washington DC. Handgun in one pocket, ammo in the other. Just several hundred thousand guys and girls walking their way through D.C. on their way to a Virginia shooting range for some sport shooting. On the way we could stop at the White House and the Capitol and let our government know that we take the Second Amendment extremely seriously as a personal right not to be chipped away by restriction after restriction, regulation after regulation, and ban after ban.

    • tagalog

      I'll go!

I bet the folks heading for the range will have lots of interesting firearms that I've never seen up close.

    • RedWhiteAndJew

Here in Ohio, we did something similar. In protest of the governor's lackadaisical management of the passage and signing of a concealed carry law here in Ohio, open carry marches were organized throughout the state. Open carry was, and still is, legal in Ohio without a license. However, in certain locals, doing so invites unwanted attention from the police, up to and including wrongful arrest.

During our marches, no one was harassed. :-)

  • Drakken

If Obummer and company try for a universal gun ban, the people of the US won't give them up period! I would hate to be in law enforcement today because if they try for confiscation they will get a fight.

    • Pontotoc Bill

I know a lot of law enforcement people who would refuse to enforce these types of unconstitutional demands by the libtards.

      • RedWhiteAndJew

That's one of the things a lot of lefties don't grok. There may be a few cop politicians out there who talk trash about gun owners, but Joe Beat Cop has no problem with law-abiding citizens keeping and bearing arms, and the majority will not buy into the head fake where the government tries to float the fiction that a gun owner is at one moment a law-abider at 11:59:59, and a criminal by virtue of the next tick of the clock.

Hell, there is a gun shop in Dayton owned by a Dayton cop, and the sales counter at my favorite gun shop is staffed by many retired and active duty cops.

        Grok that, libbies.

        • Pontotoc Bill

I go to several gun shops here in Southern California. Everyone is either owned by retired cops, family of cops, or heavily attended by cops for their needs.

Not only will cops (the vast majority) refuse to enforce unconstitutional demands, the military will refuse illegal orders from the government. The libtards need to understand that the military (and I am retired Air Force) swear to support and defend the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES against all enemies, foreign and domestic. We do not swear to a person, unlike the Germans in the 1930s.

      • pagegl

The lefties will howl when that happens. Just another example of their duplicitous, hypocritical nature; they don't mind when local government refuses to enforce immigration and other leftist hated laws.

  • polnick

Unemployment can be decreased by opening up jobs for human sniffers. An enhanced human nose can be the easiest way for detecting gun powder and illegal drugs. Having the nostrils widened and inserting into the neural network olfactory sensors will create a super sniffer making the blood hound obsolete.

  • @jhaze32

Perhaps they should have the discussion about banning drugs that have side effects like feelings of suicide, etc.

  • Ghostwriter

I don't own a gun myself, but it's my choice. I'm not forcing mine on anyone else.

  • AnOrdinaryMan

On Sunday, Dec. 17th, 2012, two days after the Sandy Hook school shooting, a man went into a restaurant in San Antonio, to kill his girlfriend. After he shot her, those in the restaurant fled to a theatre next door. The gunman followed them so he could shoot more people. He began shooting, and just like in Aurora Colorado, people began to run and scream. But why wasn't this incident a lead story in the MSM?
Because there was an off-duty deputy police officer in the theatre. She pulled out her gun and shot the killer four times, BEFORE he could kill anyone in the theatre. Moral of the story: The best way to stop a bad person with a gun, is a good person with a gun. But only the local San Antonio media covered it.
The city is giving the female officer a medal.

  • Infovoyeur

As an innocent unarmed private civilian out in public, I would feel safer in a region allowing concealed carry, since statistics seem to show a drop in gun-related crime in those areas.

  • popseal

Addressing the symptom of gun violence without examining the disease of a constant diet of violent entertainment that promotes the violence can only be a politician’s deception aimed at earning cheap points with leftist idiots. It’s not unlike attacking pencils and keyboards over the sin of mispelled words.

  • Mike Constitution

The power hungry politicians, mostly Democrat, that imposed the ineffective Gun Free Zones are just as responsible for the slaughter of those children as the crazy young man that did it and they should be prosecuted as accessories to murder.

  • Tan

The fact that there are many Christians dying from genocide by radical Muslims in the Middle East and Obama and the Left didn't take any serious action goes to show you how hypocritical they are. The fact that anti-Semitism is on the rise in Europe and Obama and the Left don't take notice of it goes to show you that they are hypocritical as well. In other words, the fact that they want to destroy our 1st amendment and our 2nd amendment more than they want to rescue Christians and Jews from horrible atrocities is amazing to me. This is the kind of behavior I cannot understand. But then again, the Bible says that in the last days people will make evil good and good evil. Regarding the hypocritical behavior of Obama, the Left, and Hollywood's so-called "Demand a Plan," here is what their real message is to conservatives regarding the 2nd amendment: conservatives can't have a firearm, but all the Leftists/Progressives can. It's the same thing with the 1st amendment: they hate freedom of speech when it applies to conservatives, but love it when it applies to their Leftist beliefs. That's their real message to the US!!!

  • polnick

Separating oneself from violence is too costly; the best defense is staying away from dimly lit streets. Muggers work in the darkness and prey upon those who believe the crime rate is low. But only one in twenty file a police report after being mugged, their reluctance adds to the appearance of safe streets.

  • Fritz

I think the solution to school, and other mass shootings, is more carry, concealed and open, and a ban on gun free zones with public access. Here is an interesting question, if prayer is forbidden in school because there is a division between church and state falsely read into the U.S constitution how can they create gun free zones on taxpayer owned public property like a school when the right to own and bear arms is very specifically spelled out and upheld by the courts?

  • Adolf Hitler

Like my buddy Obama i used gun control on germans right before the genecide of the jews. Every despot in history disarms the masses first. Then later the mass killings start. Then finally its all out g e n e c i d e. Tighten the seatbelts, you are in for a bad ride. Very bad ;(

But it is legal and ok to abort a million unborn babies in this country every year. Where's the outrage on this from the liberal left? God help us.
