Camille Paglia and the Clash of Cultures

imageCamille Paglia or Samuel Huntington? It was hard to tell Wednesday when Paglia said in an interview with Tracy Clark-Flory in Salon that “the escalating instability not just in Egypt but throughout the Mideast is very ominous. There is a clash of cultures brewing in the world that may take a century or more to resolve — and there is no guarantee that the secular West will win.”

This is the kind of talk that has gotten many another writer and commentator labeled as a racist bigot. Paglia’s “clash of cultures” is closely akin to Huntington’s “clash of civilizations,” which notwithstanding how obvious it is that just such a clash is taking place now, is widely derided in the mainstream media.

As Huntington famously observed in The Clash of Civilizations, “Wherever one looks along the perimeter of Islam, Muslims have problems living peaceably with their neighbors. The question naturally rises as to whether this pattern of the late 20th century conflict between Muslim and non-Muslim groups is equally true of relations between groups from other civilizations. In fact, it is not. Muslims make up 1/5 of the world’s population but in the 1990s they have been far more involved in intergroup violence than the people of any other civilization….Islam’s borders are bloody, and so are its innards” (p. 256).

This is manifestly true, and even truer than it was when Huntington wrote it. So it is hard to understand how anyone can object to this, but after all, Leftist analysis is generally based on fantasy and fiction, and this case is no different. Mohammed Ayoob, a professor of International Relations at Michigan State University, wrote in CNN in February 2012 that “political scientist Huntington wrote in 1993 that cultural divisions preclude a defining global civilization, and the West and the Muslim world would never share the same values,” and that “many of us” believed this thesis to have been “discredited beyond repair.”

Ayoob did, however, say that Huntington’s thesis had been “reaffirmed” by the European Union’s ban on purchasing oil from Iran, and by France’s criminalization of denial of the Armenian Genocide. These decisions, he said, “sent the same message to the Muslim world: You are not our equals and are doomed to be judged by standards different from those by which we judge ourselves.”

Ayoob’s skepticism regarding Huntington’s thesis and placement of the blame entirely on the West for any clash with the Islamic world that may in fact exist is drearily typical among Leftist and Islamic supremacist pundits. And that’s why Camille Paglia, by offhandedly affirming the existence of a clash of cultures between the West and the global Islamic umma in the course of an interview about Hillary Clinton, may have set herself up for a firestorm of indignation from her ideological kin.

Despite her libertarian leanings, Camille Paglia’s Leftist credentials are impeccable, so she can say things like this in pro-jihad, pro-Sharia Leftist Salon. If Pamela Geller or Nonie Darwish or I had written exactly the same paragraph, Salon would have rejected it, or if it had appeared elsewhere, Salon would have vilified the writer as a racist, bigoted Islamophobe, fear-mongering for profit by talking about a mythical clash of cultures.

However, as Sam Harris, Joyce Carol Oates, and Richard Dawkins have recently learned, Camille Paglia will not be exempt. If she keeps talking about a “clash of cultures” that the secular West might lose, she, too, will be tarred as a “racist, bigoted Islamophobe,” impeccable Leftist credentials notwithstanding.

No one who dares speak out against jihad violence and Islamic supremacism is spared. Tuesday night PBS aired a BBC documentary about the life of Muhammad for which I was interviewed, and a small part of the interview briefly appears in the documentary, amid an avalanche of material about how Muhammad was essentially a modern-day Gandhi. This led to a small uproar on Twitter, with Leftists and Islamic supremacists tweeting angrily to PBS asking how they could dare to air the views (even for just a few seconds) of a hate-filled bigot like me. How do they know that I am a hate-filled bigot? Most, if not all, of the angry Tweeters probably never read a line I have ever written, and even if they have, wouldn’t be able to find any actual hatred or bigotry in it. But they have been told again and again and again that that is what I am about, and the people who tell them are people they trust, so they know it must be true.

Once I am completely demonized, marginalized, and out of the way, they will start in on the next target, until there will be no one left to say the smallest critical word about jihad violence, Sharia oppression, and Islamic supremacism. Camille Paglia may well find this out.

    Robert Spencer wrote:

“Once I am completely demonized, marginalized and out of the way, they will start in on the next target, until there will be no-one left to say the smallest critical word about Jihad violence, Sharia oppression and Islamic supremacism.”

    =

Exactly right, this is how the left operates and it always has been. They isolate a particular target and make it exceedingly personal with a non stop barrage of smears, ridicule and ad hominem’s, until said target has been eviscerated.

This is why so many of us on the right were appalled at the treatment Diana West received at Frontpage, precisely because it had the strong whiff of a full frontal Alinskyite assault, virtually indistinguishable from what the left has done to Sarah Palin and Bob Bork so many others, including McCarthy and Whittaker Chambers, often times with devastating consequences for the victims of their vicious attacks, and that should NEVER be the way we treat our own.

Its not a question of whose right or whose wrong on the issues, reasonable people (on the same team) can politely discuss their differences of opinion, and if one side has erred in their presentation, the other side can point it out while allowing the mistaken party to maintain their dignity and good name.

But when we start behaving as viciously as leftists towards one another, using vicious ad hominem’s (Bircher, paranoid, conspiratorial, crackpot, hysterical et al.) to characterize those with whom we disagree, a line has been crossed that conservatives must denounce in the strongest possible terms, and that indeed has been the overwhelming response.

Lastly, I don’t expect any better from Ron Radosh. Radosh is a former Marxist radical who has brought all of his baggage with him over to the other side, a man who is clearly quite comfortable deploying Alinskyite tactics against anyone he deems an adversary, conservatives included, that much has been made crystal clear, but I am shocked that David has doubled-down with this fool and cannot see WHY so many conservatives were horrified by this whole sordid affair.

I hate to bring this up again, but the irony of Robert Spencer’s conclusion was just impossible to ignore and sadly Ms. West still has not received the public apology from Frontpage that I and many others believe she has coming to her. I am still waiting for David to do what is right, though I have no such illusions that Ronald Radosh is even capable of shame, contrition or doing the honorable thing.

    • ziggy zoggy

Dude, stop wasting everybody’s time whining about West. Her book was seriously flawed and its conclusion absolutely was crackpot, paranoid and conspiratorial. Stalin and his agents did not control American policy. You claim to decry personal attacks out of one side of your mouth and launch a string of ad hominems against Radosh out of the other. You West sycophants are as bad as Paulbots.

      • Dobermite

Radosh is a bully and there’s only one way to deal with bullies, not politely, but to give them a taste of their own medicine. I am not like him because I defend the honor of a conservative woman he has seen fit to viciously attack, only a distorted practitioner of moral equivalency would read it that way. I don’t know an honorable man on the right who could look at this, the vile way this woman was attacked, and not be disgusted by it. And I don’t know Diana West personally. Never met her in my life. But I’m enough of a man to know that no woman deserves to be mistreated this way, particularly one whose heart is in the right place, even if all of her facts are not exactly right.

As for the degree to which Stalin subverted American policy, and we already know that he did, no-one denies that, not even Radosh or David, the argument here is largely about degree, but as I said, that argument could have and should have been conducted civilly, like a family disagreement, that is my primary objection, not whether or not Harry Hopkins was Agent 19 or some such thing. If you can’t understand that, then you too are an Alinskyite who fits quite comfortably in the Ron Radosh camp.

        • ziggy zoggy

Radosh criticized West’s book and rightly so. He did not viciously attack her. He proved the book was factually incorrect and its conclusion was dead wrong. There is nothing Alinskyite about that, and the bad ideas and shoddy work of a woman don’t deserve special consideration any more than a man’s do. West was invited to write a rebuttal but rudely refused. She was the one who overreacted and doubled down on errors.

Your head is in the right place even if your heart isn’t.

          • Patscholar

His attack piece was vicious. A more scholarly approach in making his points would have been more effective – What I mainly recall are his ad hominin attacks, not the points he made. It doesn’t make a lot of difference as to whether agent 19 was Harry Hopkins – West’s description of Hopkins was enough to make the hair stand up on the back of my neck,.

          • ziggy zoggy

How was Radosh vicious? How was his review ad hominem? Neither claim is true.

      • Rocky Mountain

        “Dude”? Really?

        • ziggy zoggy

          Really.

      • Texas Patriot

Ziggy Zoggy: “Her book was seriously flawed and its conclusion absolutely was crackpot, paranoid and conspiratorial. Stalin and his agents did not control American policy.”

Only a parrot would repeat such a false and misleading accusation about an leading American Conservative who has exposed a fundamental truth that the world desperately needs to hear about the effects of ideological contamination and corruption and through the subtle and insidious influence of totalitarian Communism and totalitarian Islam. My question is this. How can someone so apparently attuned to the “blizzard effect” of totalitarian Islam on Western Civilization today be so blind to the same effect of totalitarian Communism on the West in the nineteen thirties and forties onward?

Here’s a hint. There is something blinding and narcotic about the modern electronic news cycle that prevents people from seeing the truth, and I think it has to do with what the Bolsheviks, the Stalinists, the Nazis and now the so-called Neo-Conservatives discovered about the Big Lie Theory. In other words, if you tell a big enough lie and repeat it often enough, sooner or later most people will believe it.

And that’s especially true for parrots who can’t think for themselves and are only capable of repeating what they’ve heard from others.

Don’t be a parrot. You have a brain. Use it.

        • ziggy zoggy

          T.P.
Instead of attempting to refute my facts, you went on a rant about communist INFLUENCE in America. Neither Radosh or I ever claimed the commies never infiltrated America and influenced it. You are ignoring my statement and attacking a straw man.

          • Texas Patriot

Ziggy Zoggy: “Instead of attempting to refute my facts, you went on a rant about communist INFLUENCE in America. Neither Radosh or I ever claimed the commies never infiltrated America and influenced it. You are ignoring my statement and attacking a straw man.”

            Ziggy,

The only fact you stated is that Stalin and his agents did not CONTROL American policy. The rest are all opinions you have parroted from Messrs. Radosh and Horowitz:

Ziggy Zoggy: “Her book was seriously flawed and its conclusion absolutely was crackpot, paranoid and conspiratorial. Stalin and his agents did not control American policy.”

The truth is that Diana West has never claimed that the government of Soviet Russia was in de facto control of the government of the United States of America, and she is not saying that today. Her point is that the agents and ideology of totalitarian Communism INFLUENCED American policy in the nineteen thirties and forties in the same way that the agents and ideology of totalitarian Islam are INFLUENCING American policy today, and I think that is an irrefutable fact.

Unfortunately, Messrs. Radosh and Horowitz have chosen to mischaracterize her book in an effort to destroy the author as well as the book, and now you are parroting what they have said. Don’t be suckered into adopting the Bolshevik, Stalinist, and Leftist tactics apparently favored by Messrs. Radosh and Horowitz.

You’re smarter than that and better than that.

          • ziggy zoggy

West claimed the Soviets controlled U.S. policy.

          • Texas Patriot

Don’t be ridiculous, Ziggy. She claimed nothing of the kind. To her credit, Diana West has assembled a large body of evidence that the Soviets may have influenced American policy to a far greater degree than anyone ever imagined, but there is no evidence whatsoever that they had any direct control over the government of the United States. As Harry Truman said, the buck stops with the President. No one else has the authority to make the final call, and neither West nor anyone else has ever claimed that Franklin Delano Roosevelt (or any other U.S. president) was a Soviet Agent. You’re just being lazy and repeating false claims and ad hominem attacks that you’ve heard others make. Don’t be a parrot. Think for yourself. You won’t be sorry.

    • Rocky Mountain

“Its not a question of whose right or whose wrong on the issues, reasonable people (on the same team) can politely discuss their differences of opinion, and if one side has erred in their presentation, the other side can point it out while allowing the mistaken party to maintain their dignity and good name.” This doesn’t appear to be happening and you are right as I have noticed even a small deviation from the “party line” brings a torrent of verbal abuse and occasional threats.

  • ziggy zoggy

Paglia was right about the cultural clash but wrong about who is involved. In her conceit, she claims it is islam Vs. the “secular West.” The secular left is exactly the faction that has found common cause with islam and given up the most to appease it. The idiotic BBC special equating the murderous, pedophile, rapist bandit Muhammad to Gandhi is a perfect example of how the “secular West” treats its sworn enemies. It’s funny because Muhammad was no Gandhi but then, neither was Gandhi. Putting on diapers didn’t make him a Holy man. he was an embittered little Luddite who set India back a hundred years, and he hated the West almost as much as the islamopithecines do.

    • Dobermite

All true, but ironically it is the secular left that has invited such hostility upon us from the Muslim world. And no, I’m not blaming America, I’m blaming the American left who have fundamentally transformed America into something hideous and vile. This is not the America I grew up in.

Look, I am under no illusions that Islam is a peaceful religion or any such nonsense that the left and some useful idiots in the GOP establishment would have us believe. Clearly the opposite is true and perhaps this clash of civilizations was inevitable regardless of our own behavior, but the fact that Cultural Marxism systematically dismantled western civilization and has turned us into something that is morally repugnant in the eyes of the Muslim world certainly did not help matters. This hostility was heightened and ratcheted up, a thousand fold, post cultural/sexual revolution, which was in fact a Cultural Marxist revolution specifically designed to corrupt, de-Christianize and secularize the west.

Again, this may have happened regardless, clearly Islam is indistinguishable from Nazism where it pertains to supremacism and intolerance for anything non Muslim, and we can see very clearly how they are treating the Christian community in Egypt and everywhere Muslims are a super majority, there’s a damn pogrom against Christians going on in Egypt as we speak, so I am not saying this clash of civilizations could have been avoided, but the radical secularization and decadence of the west over the past fifty years has in some ways cost us our moral authority in this fight, and the idea that the west seeks to export its cultural rot on the Muslim world makes us really easy to hate. Heck, I’m an American and I detest the purveyors of decadence and depravity in the west too, and I’m not the only one.

      • ziggy zoggy

They call it the unholy alliance for a reason. The islamopithecines have no chance of destroying us but the left is doing a bang up job. compare American reaction to12/07/1941 to the reaction to 911.

      • Drakken

A clash between islam has been in the works since that abortion called islam was spawned, it is now coming to a full head of steam and there will be all out total war coming where no one will go untouched.

        • ziggy zoggy

I agree. It’s only a matter of time before humanity gets sick of islam. It’s just one more religion to be exterminated and forgotten like the majority of historical religions have been.

    • Abdullah Mikail

Your opinion is that of a warped person. Muhammad never committed rape or pedophilia…it is only from your own sick twisted mind.

      • JoJoJams

Abdullah, he married Aisha when she was 6, and consummated that marriage when she was 9. I know how you mohammedans put the holy spin on it that Aisha somehow had her period at 9, so it was aok – but in modern CIVILIZED societies, that is child molestation, even if Aisha herself was all for it!! The “sick twisted mind” is you d@mned mohammedans that think that is OK! And since mad mo is your “perfect man”, to be emulated – to the point that you ignorant barbarians even copy that god-awful stupid looking beard, the child molestation runs rampant in your sick islamic world, no matter that you all put your “holy” spin on it!

      • Patscholar

Mohammed often raped the female victims of his savage murdering sprees. He married a 6 year old girl and had sexual relations with her when she was 9. That is what a pedophile does. All this is written in the authorized Muslim version of Mohammad’s life. It is a product of Mohammad’s behavior not any “sick twisted” Western Mind. REad your own history.

      • Drakken

So who are we to believe rag head? You muzzy? Or our lying infidel eyes?

I seem to remember Muhammad enslaving one of the Jewish women he made a widow at the Battle of the Trench — after cutting off the heads of her entire family. Oh that’s right raping a slave isn’t really rape at all in your muslime mind though is it?

      • ziggy zoggy

        Abdullah Monkey;
Lil” Mo never committed rape or pedophilia? He said he did. Many times. Do you doubt the unholy Koran, hadiths and the word of islamopithecine “scholars?”

    • Scott Radford

      Well said.

  • rebaaron

When the prophets despaired of “truth” being told in a corrupt society, they gave comfort by telling us that reality would save the day for truth. The Left can spin their fantasies only until reality asserts itself.

    • Drakken

The reality is going to be a very brutal unforgiving thing that the leftist will deny right up to the lamppost with the rope hung over it.

      • rebaaron

Has there ever in all of history been a more obvious monster than Islam? Has there ever been a more brutal, unforgiving thing? The Islamo-fascists will show their hand in time to wake America before it is too late. Were it not for Obama the US army would be planted in the heart of the Arab world right now. We will deal with them. It will just cost a lot more lives. And don’t forget, the people of Israel sees things clearly. God grant them the courage of their convictions, and they will end this with one mighty blow.

        • JoJoJams

So true! And one of the more “scarier” aspects of that hydra is the actual devout followers in the “front” who are absolutely convinced at how “peaceful”, benign and “good” islam is, making excuses for all the evil behind them, stating how it’s not islam, etc ad nauseum, while millions behind them behead, murder, terrorize and rape throughout the ENTIRE world, wherever islamic nations are. It’s scarily mindboggling!

          • defcon 4

Which is why your criticism of islam is strictly illegal in any islam0fascist state.

  • truebearing

Paglia is too honest and intelligent to continue as a Leftist. The repercussions of her comments may awaken her to a choice: adherence to a mind numbing, failed ideology; or the free pursuit and expression of the truth. The Left would be doing her a favor by caterwauling her right out of their deranged camp.

Here is more truth that will cause Paglia unending hostility from the Left:

“It remains baffling how anyone would think that Hillary Clinton (born the same year as me) is our party’s best chance. She has more sooty baggage than a 90-car freight train. And what exactly has she ever accomplished — beyond bullishly covering for her philandering husband? She’s certainly busy, busy and ever on the move — with the tunnel-vision workaholism of someone trying to blot out uncomfortable private thoughts.

I for one think it was a very big deal that our ambassador was murdered in Benghazi. In saying “I take responsibility” for it as secretary of state, Hillary should have resigned immediately. The weak response by the Obama administration to that tragedy has given a huge opening to Republicans in the next presidential election. The impression has been amply given that Benghazi was treated as a public relations matter to massage rather than as the major and outrageous attack on the U.S. that it was.”

let’s not forget Juan Williams having a rare rational moment… as soon as the heat from the left became too intense he got right back with the program. we all thought that maybe he would see the light and realize how bigoted the left is but no- he managed to rationalize their ill treatment of him. this will most likely end the same.

      • truebearing

Possibly, but one can hope that an intelligent person can see the errors in their thinking and change. Some of the most effective warriors for conservative values were once leftists.

    • http://www.drbukk.com/ Nancy Albert

Paglia also called out the hypocrisy of feminists who hate Sarah Palin, pointing out that she actually accomplished things on her own. The hate comments came by the thousands. Let’s hope Camille continues to write the brutal truth.

“The weak response by the Obama administration to that tragedy has given a huge opening to Republicans in the next presidential election.”
That would be a terrible tragedy would it not, Camille Paglia? This woman is simply an enigma. She’s as hopelessly clueless as she always was, notwithstanding her apparent conversion to a Sam Huntington worldview. The left, the God-forsaken and damned LEFT, of which she has been a proud member, is responsible for the traitor in the White House. Paglia is not to be trusted, EVER.

      • truebearing

David Horowitz was a leftist once. Is he eternally forsaken, even though he saw the truth about the Left and not only rejected it, but spent his life fighting it?
I don’t agree with Paglia on a lot of issues, but she is quite bright and has the courage to speak the truth, even when it goes against the leftist orthodoxy. That is a promising sign. Most leftists are as hopeless as they are worthless and would never miss a goose step.

        • beezwaxing

David H. left the left a very long time ago. He has proven his bona fides countless times over decades. As I said in another post here, just wait a week and Paglia will cycle up into her manic phase and say something completely insane again.

  • David of Edinburgh

As a former leftist who knows its warped mindset all too well I tend to treat leftists’ reaction to the obvious – and Paglia has stated the obvious – as I would treat a car exhaust backfiring – ignore it. Indeed on doesn’t have to be a former leftist or even be a right winger to know that what she has stated is obvious. Common sense itself tells you, an attribute that exists within the mindset of the silent majority – or should that be ‘silenced’ majority – silenced by common sense denying ‘political correctness’ (a mutant child of an equally mutant left)?

    • http://libertyandculture.blogspot.com/ Jason P

You’re right. It’s a single line and leftists will just ignore it. I’m sure they’re saying “ah Paglia with her eccentricities and occasional far-out comments …”

With millions of Muslims already in
Europe and the numbers steadily increasing it is hard to imagine how
we can resist or reverse this invasion, especially when our leaders
refuse to recognise the danger and continually strive to appease
Muslims. Will there be strife and bloodshed or just a quiet
capitulation? Islam as a movement will always seek to subdue and
eliminate resistance. Islam is a vast terrorist organization with
countless fanatical adherents and every Muslim is obliged to fight
for the cause of and the spread of Islam. The only peace in Islam is
total submission to the will of Allah. The Muslim concept of logic is
totally alien to ours; dialogue between Western and Islamic culture
is impossible because even the definition and understanding of words

“The Muslim concept of logic” is an oxymoron.

The people of Europe need to realize that their socialist leaders do not have the best interest of the people as a priority. Like the leftists here, they want one thing, a single world government, however it is achieved is of no consequence to them as long as they get to stay in power. The problem with that attitude is that it is unlikely the Islamic leaders will let them continue to hold that power. One way or another their delusions will be the end of them.

      • JoJoJams

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: It’s the “whore of babylon” (the one-world leftists) riding the ten-headed beast (islam). And yes, it will turn on them and destroy them. I really believe that one of the reasons they coddle islam, and are bringing the barbaric hordes in to our western nations, is that they, in their own unbelief, look upon religion as an “opiate of the masses”, and islam is a perfect religion for despots and tyrants to use to control the masses. They believe they can “use” islam to control and bring about their one-world government – but they will find out in the end that the beast will turn on them.

        • Abdullah Mikail

If you are the best that the West has to offer in its defense it deserves to be laid in smoking ruin…you have no idea who the true enemy of the West is and you are tilting against windmills.

          • truebearing

            “Tilting against windmills?”
I see you have some Western education. It has to Western because the Middle East has no decent schools (except in Israel), just indoctrination stations. Did it ever occur to you that the weapons you Muslims seek, or the wealth you acquired from oil, or the car you drive, or computer you abuse with your stupidity, all came from the West…and that the basis of everything the West achieved is underpinned by JudeoChristian values? I didn’t think so.

          • ziggy zoggy

            Abdullah Monkey,

the enemies of the West are islamopithecine weaklings like you and politically strong but physically weak leftists. It’s easy to see who will win the long run: My side, because it’s the only one that is willing and able to stand and fight.

          • iluvisrael

Just wait til we start to play Cowboys and muzzies!

    • Drakken

There will be strife and bloodshed not seen in a millennia, it is coming and how it will start is a small egregious incident and it will spread like wildfire from there because the muslims will go completely ape and their actions will be something that no one can afford to ignore, the natives will start out protecting their homes and neighbors and move up the scale of response.

      • Abdullah Mikail

Yeahhhhhh, foaming at the mouth and screaming about the end of the world is surely a way to get attention….keep it up.

        • Drakken

The day is coming where you won’t be so smug muslim. God(not allah) bless the Crusades.

        • defcon 4

Gee, kinda sounds like any typical day in any one of your mosques — spewing your islamic hatred of the najjis kaffir is part and parcel of your faith troglodyte.

        • iluvisrael

It’s always you rabid, angry muzzies ‘foaming at the mouth’ go take a nice loose dump in your koran.

    • Abdullah Mikail

Dude, whatever you are smoking please do not share it.

      • beezwaxing

He’s smoking the opium of Islamic religion.

      • Drakken

Keep living in denial, it just makes our job that much easier.

      • defcon 4

It’s time to relax w/a tall, refreshing mug of warm camel urine. prophet recommended, prophet approved.

    • truebearing

It won’t be easy, but it won’t get any easier if you don’t start now. Muslims are not the majority right now. Don’t wait until they are.
Unfortunately, some will have to be the first to fight, and be imprisoned, or die. Eventually though, if enough people commit themselves to defeating Islam, the tide will turn. Courage is what is needed, but it seems to be in short supply.
If I was to design a strategy for ridding the European continent of Islam, I’d first network with like-minded groups and begin organising and coordinating the regions where there are few Muslims, or liberals. Take back the rural areas first. Work toward getting more conservatives, with backbone, elected. Work to get conservatives elected to every position avaible in the government. Slowly work toward a majority by selecting target towns, then cities, then concentrating your resources and people in those targeted areas until you enlighten that population enough to win at the ballot box, then move on to the next target. Each conquest will bring new recruits and money. The momentum will also bolster faith and courage. Concentration of resources is key in the beginning. Don’t spread yourself too thin.

    • ziggy zoggy

Tell me. Who would win if Europeans actually started fighting back? Someday I’m sure you will.

    • laura rubin

“your govt doesnt care about you!!!…….” the islamic murderer said in england, after he killed the soldier. he got that one right!

  • guymacher

Paglia is that rara avis, a liberal with a brain.

    • beezwaxing

Her brain is demented and has been for a long time. She’s a narcissistic LEFTIST, always has been, always will be. It sure took Paglia, the brilliant intellectual, long time to realize what most Americans knew 12 years ago.

  • Chezwick

Fascinating and bizarre are two words I would use to describe Paglia. But one thing is certain….in the same way skin color doesn’t protect the black conservative from liberal wrath, neither will Paglia’s lesbianism protect her.

    • beezwaxing

Why should it? And why should I care

  • guymacher

” amid an avalanche of material about how Muhammad was essentially a modern-day Gandhi.” How did this silliness get past the author or the editor?

    • SCREW SOCIALISM

It’s “The Religion of Peace”, if you believe that beheading, FGM, cutting off the hand of thieves, dress codes for women, killing gays, hijacking planes and flying them into buildings are the precepts of a peaceful ideology.

  • Jeffrey P. Rush

Keep going Mr. Spencer, you are not alone.

  • SCREW SOCIALISM

    G-D BLESS YOU ROBERT SPENCER!

  • AlexanderGofen

Mr. Spencer, I suggest just to pay no attention to senseless terminology of the lefts such as “bigotry”, “racism”, xenophobia, and similar (merely spit-words and discussion stoppers). I regret that you called your last brochure “Islam: religion of bigots”.

You meant right – the lack of tolerance (to “infidels”) and fanatical militancy of islam. However in the left’s minds “bigotry” means (I guess) something different. They understand bigotry as attempts to criticize and despise an entire group or class of people – whichever it may be.

However, some “entire groups” are characterized by their adherence to a wrong or hostile ideology, religion, platform, party, or they merely represent the enemies of our nation. To criticize them, to despise and to fight against them all is a must. Therefore it is OK to fight against islam in general which is an enemy ideology and banner.

  • Kurt NY

So to acknowledge that Turks committed genocide against Armenians during WWI a century ago is to tell Muslims they are not equal to us? Were they to stop applauding Hitler’s efforts long enough to note that Europeans committed genocide against Jews in WWII be them saying we are not equal to them?

I have no crying need for Muslims to abandon their religion but perhaps they would allow us the same freedom to keep ours without requiring us to submit, pay them jizya, and be good submissive dhimmis?

  • Abdullah Mikail

“This is the kind of talk that has gotten many another writer and commentator labeled as a racist bigot. ”
    Gee, I wonder why?
Could be, if the shoe fits wear it.

    • Drakken

Your use and abuse of the race and bigot card has no meaning anymore muslim, we are over it.

    • defcon 4

Islam isn’t a race troglodyte. What’s always disgusting about islamic troglodytes such as yourself is that you hypocritically cry bigotry while ignoring the fact all your holey books of hate are full of rabid, disgusting and sometimes genocidal antisemitism.

  • http://www.MARVINFOX.com/ Marvin E. Fox

A clash of cultures is obvious in our war against the Jihadists. The only fuel for a denial is to deny the source of the Jihad, deny its goal, and deny the support it gets from other Muslims. I believe there is a strong element in the Muslim religion that does not agree with jihad as a means of conquering the planet, but those gentle souls are in a war against Jihad themselves, and have no guarantee for their success. The Jihadists seem to be killing more Muslims than any other enemies.
    Marvin Fox

    • rt90k

I have not seen evidence of a strong element in Islam that opposes jihad, unless it would be those who use deception as they describe an Arab-centric ideology hostile to the West as a “religion of peace”. Yes that is a strong element of Islam which permeates the US government, foreign and immigration policy, academia, the media and elements of the Roman and mainline churches in their “interfaith” endeavors.

  • beezwaxing

I’m through listening to self-styled intellectuals and other leftwing do nothings like Paglia who are only now waking up to smell the stench of burning bodies in Israel and in Christian communities throughout the middle east. So Camille now thinks that Sam Huntington had a good point or two? Well congratulations, professor! You’re a regular freakin’ genius! Now get to the rear where you belong WOMAN, and let the men prepare for that war of civilizations you lefties had a hand in creating.

  • cjkcjk

No sympathy for these people who have worked overtime to put us in the rump moral morass that we find ourselves in unable to distinguish obvious friend from obvious foe. Seen the light? Good now to the back of the line scrubbing latrines for those of us who have had to resist your ilk for the last 40 years.

  • ratonis

Camille Paglia helped give us Barack Obama. Enough said about her credibility.

    • Texas Patriot

Perhaps you helped give us George W. Bush? Or John McCain? Or John Boehner? Do you really think that Barack Obama is that much worse than any of them? Unfortunately, they’re all more or less the same thing: corrupt politicians out to make a buck and help their friends. None of them really seem to give a flip about the best interests of the American people.

      • Drakken

        Yeah I do.

        • Texas Patriot

          Why?

  • FranzJosefStrauss

Dawkins and Paglia are not your typical counterjihadists, neither have they been known to back down from a fight. I see this as a sign that people outside of the counterjihad movement are starting to smell the coffee. I believe it’s got to do with the dismal failure of the “Arab Spring” and also how the servants of Allah are behaving in the secular West. The cognitive dissonance simply becomes to strong to ignore for any intelligent person. I believe we will see more people speaking up.

  • voidforpurpose

Dante put Mohommad in his correct positon in History- confined to The Inferno as an infernal divider of men.

The prophet of “Submission” is a throwback to the worst, already-transcended traits of theocratic terrorism in the Old Testament.

Mohammad is a retrograde force in the West.

To be opposed naturally and not debated rationally.

Because Islam has chosen to be Irrationalism apotheosized.

It debunks itself by this choice.

    • mortimer zilch

Islam’s internal differences seem to be widening. Like the Iraq-Iran war, let them war against each other, like what is happening to Syria. Maybe they will destroy each other, and Islam dissolve into a polite set of customs.

  • Philo Vaihinger

Repeal votes for women? What was that amendment, again?

    • Major

19th. Sadder day then the 14th?

  • Philo Vaihinger

    Dear Ziggy,

The secular left loves anyone who hates America.

But Camille wrote of the secular West, and that’s a different slice of the population.

Ask Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, or Christopher Hitchens.

Well, as for Hitchens, you can read up.

    Worth it, actually.

  • Robert S Moulds

Camilla Paglia is entitle to her opinions and not just because her book tramps and vamps set me free. Allowing me ironically considering some of what she said about the transgendered to wear mini dresses, skirts, halter tops, heels and one piece swimsuits. Empowering me though my vulnerability in any case Islamist call hate me all they want failing to see the irony in having eunuchs like in Ali Babba tales.

Camille Paglia reaches a truth beyond that known by any political official in the U.S. or U.K. What happens to institutions in those counties–or any other for that matter–when those institutions lose their masculinity is catastrophic.

One of her best quotes is, “If it was left for women to create civilization we would still be living in grass huts.” In truth, with women in charge, even those grass huts would have gone up in cinders.

For proof reach no further than “The Tinder Box: How Politically Correct Ideology Destroyed the U.S. Forest Service, Christopher Burchfield, Stairway Press. The entire book supports the case presented by Ms. Paglia. The most powerful arguments are presented in Chapters 6,7, 16 and 17 (check out the Amazon reviews).

The dichotomy between men and women has evolved over 6 million years now. The differences are not marginal but are manifest. For feminist readers–upon reading the Paglia column–analyzing “The Tinder Box” will require a bottle of blood pressure medication by the sofa side.
