The AFL-CIO’s Newest Marxist Union Boss

AFL+CIO+President+Leads+Protest+March+Wall+D5lIop51pqKlIt starts with unions and Obamacare – but maybe at the end of the day it’s all about Marxism.  Press releases reveal that the National Taxi Workers Alliance (NTWA) recently became the fifty-seventh affiliate of the AFL-CIO.  Representing a portion of New York City cab drivers, this marks the first time independent contractors have become affiliated with America’s oldest labor federation.

As a result of this affiliation, the Executive Director of NTWA, Bhairavi Desai, has been elected to a seat on the AFL-CIO Executive Council. As a New Yorker, it is interesting to review who Desai is – and what is her interest. While media lauds her as a successful immigrant “organizer,” simple research shows Desai is an open and unabashed Marxist. Under Desai’s leadership, the New York Taxi Workers Alliance operated out of the radical New York Marxist School and Brecht Forum from 1998 to 2003. In 2004, The Brecht Forum and the New York Marxist School listed Bhairavi Desai as a director of the group on its annual IRS filing. (IRS Form 990 for 2004, Brecht Forum, IRS forms.) She regularly speaks and is a proud member of The Brecht Forum, an independent Marxist educational and cultural center in New York City.  The AFL-CIO’s appointment of her is in furtherance of Marxism – and a continuation of encouraging the very un-American notion of class warfare.

Do immigrant cab drivers (and other union members) work many back-breaking hours to further Marxism? Is that what the American flag on hard-hats today symbolizes? Desai in interviews openly says she is “drawn to Marx” and worse. The New York Taxi Workers Alliance is poorly managed and had $3,836 in debts in its most recent filing with the IRS – yet Desai is trusted to manage America’s oldest union? Say it isn’t so. Apparently being a Marxist enables one to advance politically in today’s America.

And to add to the pain of 2013 life in Obama’s America, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission is forcing cab drivers to pay 6 cents per fare to Desai’s union to “pay for tutorials on ObamaCare” according to today’s New York Post.  Six cents for immigrant, hard-working drivers — which wont even go for health insurance.  David Pollack, executive director of the Committee for Taxi Safety, estimates it “will cost cabbies $10 million to $15 million annually and says it is a scam.” This, while the government is shut down and there is a $16.7 trillion debt limit. (Imagine a Russian émigré cab driver explaining this tax going to a Marxist union leader to his family – sounds like the old days in the USSR.)

But, for leaders like Bhairavi Desai, President Obama is too right-wing.  She has made her opposition to deportation of immigrants apparent, saying, “immigrant workers already have earned citizenship. When people are working 60 to 70 hours a week in back-breaking conditions, nobody should have the gall, especially sitting in the fancy halls of Congress, to look at an immigrant worker and tell them that they have not earned this day.”

Ms. Desai isn’t concerned about the legalities (or obligations) of being an American.  In classic class-warfare language she speaks of the “fancy halls of Congress,” and believes law makers shouldn’t be able to tell immigrants anything. She is an organizer of communist May Day Parades – and yet as an avowed Marxist will benefit with tens of millions of dollars courtesy of Obamacare.

Look no further than the Brecht Forum for an explanation of what Desai believes

“Like many of the left institutions and projects that weathered the ‘70s, the New York Marxist School represents a synthesis of traditions and impulses from the old and new lefts. In its core curriculum is classical Marxism with an emphasis on the themes and approaches elaborated by thinkers like Antonio Gramsci, Raymond Williams, Paulo Freire, and Amilcar Cabral.”

The proud America of AFL-CIO has become a new radical movement where unions and Obamacare morph into Marxism. Marxism is alive and well today in America.

Crackpots like Desai make me ashamed of sharing a national heritage with her.

    • Guy Fromage

I’m with you, there. I’m Jewish, and despair over the number of my Landsmen who are leftists.

      • truebearing

It has always baffled me as to why, in a people of such high intelligence, there are so many who can’t see through the lies of Marxism.

        • 1proactive2

There is no correlation between intelligence and wisdom.

      • 1proactive2

I understand that David H. was, or is, going to write a book on that phenomenon. The near wholesale appeal of socialism or that, on steroids, communism, appears to be so common among Jews.

Although not Jewish, I’ve often, very often, wondered why Jews would embrace socialism to willingly and completely, especially considering history’s brutal treatment of them by governments. One would think they would adamantly insist on freedom from government intervention in all areas of life. See also, Libertarian.

I hope David has such a book in the works.

This will come as a great shock to those who have deluded themselves into believing that communism is dead. Imagine how they would feel if they actually figured out that we are in the middle of a Gramscian coup.

I remember the good old days, when the health care was great, the US was number 1 in every positive category, and the Marxists laid low and kept their deranged mouths shut.

Bhairavi Desai in the end it harms America. For these people no tax is too high

  • justquitnow

well…the post article instead of telling us what the tax will or will not do or what it;s for, they do a he said, she said about it. Either it pays for the critical long-term care insurance or it doesn’t. Worker’s comp won’t cover them unless they are hurt on the job. One said’s it’s a marxist piot, the other says it’s for healthcare costs….you decide…is the freedom-loving, hardworking man correct, or the silly communist woman wrong? Gee if only through multiple articles and thousands of words, we could have gotten the simple facts about it.

“You have to pass it to find out what is in it.” – Nancy “Snicker Snicker” Pelosi

2014 is going to body slam the Democrat Party. Those sky high deductibles are going to induce people to go to the polls.

Going against the natural order and a person gets burned and yet the left goes against the natural order, Nature, every chance it gets.

Notice how silent the left is on Hurricanes? They predicted more we had one disorganized storm hit the gulf coast. October is half over and Hurricane system is winding down. The predictions were wrong. Like the ones about the Himalayas snow cap melting or the Arctic being ice free.

With Obama Care the left is going against actuarial science. Mathematics is about as fundamental to the universe/Nature as anything

      • glpage

You’re expecting leftists to understand mathematics??? When they believe that going further into debt is a way to get out of debt I have to believe that they are probably incapable of understanding math.

        • A Z

Some of them do. Liberal economist Krugman certainly does. He exhibited the discipline necessary to prove something other mathematically. It was a very narrow result, which does not detract from the effort and concentration to arrive at it.

However I would submit that now he mostly shoots from the hip and for the most part does not use mathematics when deciding what to do politically.

Bhairavi Desai and her like are responsible for the economic situation in america today

The Brecht Forum probably named after Berthold Brecht a German communist. He wrote the play Mother Courage set in the 30 years war (1618 to 1648). Mother Courage is the eponymous protagonist of the play.

Bertie wanted the audience to revile Mother Courage. and learn the communism is better/capitalism is evil message he had so craftily constructed in the play.
The audience loved Mother Courage so he rewrote the play a few times.

Subconsciously Bertie wrote about the lives of archetypical humans (see Joseph Campbell) and so he was a success.

Consciously, he was as much an intellect as Nancy (You got to pass it to find out what is in it.) Pelosi.

At this point, our political situation has become absurd. Humanity spent more than a century implementing and using the ideas of Marx. Intellectually, they have shown themselves to be a road to nowhere and practically they have resulted in some of the worst totalitarian regimes in the history of humankind. And that’s saying something.

How any sentient person can buy into the ideology of Marx in the 20th century incomprehensible to me. While I’m a conservative/libertarian sort politically, I actually too the time to read up on Marxism, communism and socialism. I was surprised to find out that it’s mostly criticism. It also has some high minded ideas about the nature of man, but when you look closely it becomes clear that they are just that, ideas. I actually found some of the analysis and critique on offer interesting, The most compelling is the “materialist” view of the wheel of history. but at the end of the day, it’s just some ideas and a perspective. It’s a pose, not a workable way to govern a society.

I think it’s time we consider separating from such people somehow. Let them do this to their own country. It’s anathema to the U.S. constitution and our values of individualism. I do not want to share a country with such people anymore.

Why worry about her? Look at Obie, Ax and Valerie. They had communist/fellow traveler mentors. But there is no real communist unless you’ve read all Marx’s books. Here’s to the revolution.

  • Ron Lewenberg

An Indian Marxist ran the Brecht center and now pusheds communist. Seem’s like “the Solution” to me:

After the uprising of the 17th of June
The Secretary of the Writers’ Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee
    Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?

  • Joey Richaas

Bhairavi Desai is a marxist who had the gall to say ” This is going to give services to a population that’s been exploited.” Can people not quit if they dont like their jobs? They should quit if they are being exploited. Not steal from hard working people via taxes.
    Bhairavi Desai shame on you

  • Drakken

Crackpot commi’s like Desai only deserve one thing, a red dotted hole between the eyes.

Back when I was a grad student during the Koch years, I would ride a bus every so often to Manhattan. Always there to greet me were a thousand or so handbills posted on walls and street lamps by, and for the benefit of, Communist crackpots like Ms. Desai. She’s a disgrace, of course, but Richard Trumka has given her a platform from which to promote her Marxist-Leninist revolution.
With Bill DeBlasio about to become NYC mayor, it seems like old times have come back with a vengeance. Ed Koch would not be amused if alive today. DeBlasio, unfortunately, will applaud.
