Hannah Arendt deserves the severe criticism she received For "Eichmann in Jerusalem." For example, in 1944, her supposedly "banal" "nobody" Eichmann is told to stop killing Jews. Eichmann replies that he will not stop, so Himmler himself tells him to stop, fearing war crimes charges: "Do you realize you are speaking to (SS Reichsfuhrer Himmler)" Himmler thunders, even though Himmler and Hitler bore the most responsibility for the Holocaust. Eichmann blithely replied: (So what) "I will speak to the Fuhrer himself." With this episode, Arendt demolishes her own "Eichmann-was-a-banal -nobody" theory- "nobodies" did not live to tell Himmler to take a hike, and further tell him that he will go over his head to speak to Hitler himself and tell HITLER that his "stop-killing-Jews" policy was wrong. Some "nobody." Eichmann was bureaucratically buried for plausible deniability, which is exactly the deniability that he used in his lies to Arendt; lies Arendt uncritically repeated.
Arendt also refers often to "good German" Jews, and tries to show that the Jews themselves, especially the Zionists, were responsible for their own demise. Arendt's tale is riddled with contradictions and is a complete fraud. The article above is claptrap.many believe that the philosopher Martin Heidegger, a Nazi sympathizer was Arendt's lover. It is surprising that FPM would publish an article that is just so much nonsense.

Unfortunately, Hannah Arendt did not believe that our rights were God given, "that all men are endowed by their Creator with inalienable rights, i.e. life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Since she was a life long agnostic, married to a marxist professor herself, friends with communists like Mary McCarthy and an enthusiast for the French commune, she herself saw human rights as merely the arbitrary gift of the all powerful state, despite having written negatively of Stalin.
Wikipedia says of her 'She posited that freedom does not pre-exist the organised community, but rather, is constructed there, as the common space whereto its equal members bring their own uniqueness and "natality", and thereby, create something of lasting value such as a state.',http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannah_Arendt#Works
Hence her solution for one totalitarian system would be to replace it with another.

Good ole Hannah Arendt. She called Zev Jabotinsky a fascist for saying that Jews should leave Europe. In that way, she contributed to the holocaust Maybe it was her affair with the Nazi Heiddegger that influenced her opinion against the visionary, Zev Jabotinsky. After Hannah Arendt condemned Israel as a country that violated international law by snatching Adolf Eichmann, she settled upon a catchy interpretation of Eichmann which is contradicted by the Israelis who captured and interviewed Eichmann. The fellow in Israel who interrogated Adolf Eichmann thought Eichmann an organizational genius and accused Hannah Arendt of seeking a trendy interpretation for "The New Yorker" magazine. Now this Nazi lover/self hater is celebrated in a play :-|

Fantastic article. Raises so many good questions.

For example, how does one alert the world to the very concrete dangers of supremacism and intolerance inherent in Islamic theology and culture without "setting up the pattern for the de-humanization of the Other"?

How does one become "philosophical while loving humanity"? Does this include being "philosophical" in the face of injustice? Doesn't "loving humanity" require a conscious and uncompromising activism in opposing injustice?

How does one reconcile "rationality with morality"? If the former is unambiguously objective, the latter dwells in the realm of subjectivity. And yet, it is precisely the abandonment of morality that is at root of our present civilizational quandary, from the monstrosities of the nanny-state and deficit spending...to the abandonment of personal responsibility...right down to our microscopic fertility rates.

I'm still sorting it out folks. Sounds to me like Hannah was too, right down to the very end.

From Plato’s ‘tyranny of reason,’ to the French revolutionary terror, to Marxism’s catastrophic fulfillment in Stalinist totalitarianism, political rationalism has shown itself every bit as capable of generating moral horror as either religion or Romantic nationalism.” (v. Dana R. Villa)

What does Dana R.Villa mean by "Plato's 'tyranny of reason'". Does she really think that the rule of reason is tyranny? Perhaps Villa ought to deal with Socrates, who decided that he was the wisest of man - as the oracle of Delphi said - because he knew he was ignorant, unlike, apparently, Dana Villa. She should study Plato's Republic, and his other works.
