I think you can enjoy and appreciate and understand that gift without having to lose it. But, you must have a good imagination and some clarity of thought. Play a little "what if" game with yourself. What if I were living in some other society, what could I no longer do or say. Try to list out all the things you enjoy now that you would not be able to do or say and then try to understand the impact of that loss. If you are really honest with yourself about the freedoms you enjoy and how your life would change without them you will have some idea of how lucky you are and why you want to protect those freedoms.

I started doing that when I was a kid back in the 50's and 60's when my dad, who was a Marine Corps sargeant, would describe Communism and what it did to societies to me. I wasn't sure I completely believed him then, I thought he was being a bit harsh, but it made think about what Communism would do to my life. Now, I realize that he was more correct than I could have imagined. It may be a good thing he passed away when he did because if he had lived to see what Obama is doing to this country it surely would have killed him.

I'd like to believe that people have the ability to transcend their own life's circumstance. For example, one need not be a cancer victim in order to empathize with someone who is and understand on a basic level the ravages of the disease. So it is with human freedom....a rational, thinking person should be able to grasp the horrors of living in a despotic society just from reading accounts of those who live it....and then by extension, appreciate his/her fortune to be living in freedom.'

But maybe you're right, Spider. Maybe most people are so shallow that they can't transcend their own circumstance. Or maybe empathy is ideologically conditional (meaning it's not really empathy at all)....as is so pervasive inside the universities, where empathy for the so-called "victims" of American racism and sexism is rife, but empathy for the actual victims of communism and Islam is non-existent.

'Xenophobic' is a legitimate word and very valid one when discussing Eastern Europe. Unfortunately, Eastern European xenophobes still continue to find their main targets in Jews and Roma, not Muslims.

Another point the professor may consider is whether the Soviet Union was "xenophobic". Did it not incorporate all races and ethnicities into its fold? Did it not emphasize a break from ones cultural, historic and especially religious ties as the main criteria for membership in the collective? Did the Soviets not care if you were Uzbek, Afgan, Syrian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodiann, etc?

From the beginning of Marxism's practical implementation in Russia, from 1917 on, Soviet communism rejected the trajectory Russia was on and directed it against its very culture. The Soviets forced the imprisioned Russian population to disregard their very own distinctive history and temperament in favor of absorbtion into a "union".

This "Soviet Union" was by no means "xenophobic", it was genocidal not just to the objects of its collective, but in destroying a way of life, people had enjoyed for generations.

Phony "xenophobic" logic seems a similar outcome. It seeks socialism by softer means. It seeks a population of lemmings amused by Pravda like propaganda and consumerism. It has adopted some of capitalism's main points to a degree, but still seeks a global vision, centralized control, the standardization of mankind and the elimination of religion, dissent and free thought and speech.

Mrs. Lovinescu's story here as written by Professor Tismaneanu is inspiring. I've never heard of this brave Romanian intellectual, Monica, before. But the professor uses a word I find objectionable. He refers to "xenophobic". This invented word comes right out of the Marxist play book, and the effect of the use of the variations of the "phobic" label serve to advance such policies as thought control legislation, persecution and uncontrolled immigration under the intellectually dishonest and tainted impressions anyone painted as such will endure.

Politically correct speech and loaded terms have landed many in the West in hot water, even as these ideas serve to inch our nation, and indeed, the EU ever closer towards totalitarianism and population displacement and replacement via insane immigration policy.

Ask the typical Romanisn if they wish to be a minority in their own country and I doubt you will hear "don't be a "xenophobe", or an Islamophobes, or a homophobe. Ask any RomaniAn if they feel so inclined to hand back TrNsylvania to the Hungarians, and you will see the folly of intellectual nimkapoops Nd their lofty, fantastical musings.

Compare these brave, former dissidents from the East with Western academics and so-called intellectuals. The difference is striking. The former has courage and moral clarity; the latter is pusillanimous and morally ass-backwards. Why is it that people born and raised in a free society have no concept of their own good fortune?
