Back to School: Student Indoctrination Begins


ELAC_Campus_StudentsThe new college academic year has begun, and unfortunately, so has student indoctrination. Let’s look at some of it.

William Penn, Michigan State University professor of creative writing, greeted his first day of class with an anti-Republican rant. Campus Reform, a project of the Arlington, Va.-based Leadership Institute, has a video featuring the professor telling his students that Republicans want to prevent “black people” from voting. He added that “this country still is full of closet racists” and described Republicans as “a bunch of dead white people — or dying white people” (http://tinyurl.com/lve4te7). To a student who had apparently displayed displeasure with those comments, Professor Penn barked, “You can frown if you want.” He gesticulated toward the student and added, “You look like you’re frowning. Are you frowning?” When the professor’s conduct was brought to the attention of campus authorities, MSU spokesman Kent Cassella said, “At MSU it is important the classroom environment is conducive to a free exchange of ideas and is respectful of the opinions of others.”

That mealy-mouthed response is typical of university administrators. Professor Penn was using his classroom to proselytize students. That is academic dishonesty and warrants serious disciplinary or dismissal proceedings. But that’s not likely. Professor Penn’s vision is probably shared by his colleagues, seeing as he was the recipient of MSU’s Distinguished Faculty Award in 2003. University of Southern California professor Darry Sragow shares Penn’s opinion. Last fall, he went on a rant telling his students that Republicans are “stupid and racist” and “the last vestige of angry old white people” (http://tinyurl.com/185khtk).

UCLA’s new academic year saw its undergraduate student government fighting for constitutional rights by unanimously passing a resolution calling for the end of the use of the phrase “illegal immigrant.” The resolution states, “The racially derogatory I-word endangers basic human rights including the presumption of innocence and the right to due process guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution.” No doubt some UCLA administrators and professors bereft of thinking skills helped them craft the resolution.

The New York Post (8/25/11) carried a story about a student in training to become dorm supervisor at DePauw University in Indiana. She said: “We were told that ‘human’ was not a suitable identity, but that instead we were first ‘black,’ ‘white,’ or ‘Asian’; ‘male’ or ‘female’; … ‘heterosexual’ or ‘queer.’ We were forced to act like bigots and spout off stereotypes while being told that that was what we were really thinking deep down.” At many universities, part of the freshman orientation includes what’s called the “tunnel of oppression.” They are taught the evils of “white privilege” and how they are part of a “rape culture.” Sometimes they are forced to discuss their sexual identities with complete strangers. The New York Post story said: “DePauw is no rare case. At least 96 colleges across the country have run similar ‘tunnel of oppression’ programs in the last few years.”

University officials are aware of this kind of academic dishonesty and indoctrination; university trustees are not. For the most part, trustees are yes men for the president. Legislators and charitable foundations that pour billions into colleges are unaware, as well. Most tragically, parents who pay tens of thousands of dollars for tuition and pile up large debt to send their youngsters off to be educated are unaware of the academic rot, as well.

You ask, “Williams, what can be done?” Students should record classroom professorial propaganda and give it wide distribution over the Internet. I’ve taught for more than 45 years and routinely invited students to record my lectures so they don’t have to be stenographers during class. I have no idea of where those recordings have wound up, but if you find them, you’ll hear zero proselytization or discussion of my political and personal preferences. To use a classroom to propagate one’s personal beliefs is academic dishonesty.

Vladimir Lenin said, “Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.” That’s the goal of the leftist teaching agenda.

    Conservatives need to starve the beast of liberal colleges and universities by simply not attending them. We should consider conservative colleges or perhaps consider not attending college at all. Isn’t that a novel idea? How about a trade school? How about going out and getting a job and gaining some life experience rather than getting yourself in horrible, endless college loan debt that will take a lifetime to pay off (if you’re lucky)?

    College is okay for some and it depends on what field one is studying, but Charles Murray has recently demonstrated that most people attending college probably shouldn’t be there since they don’t have the discipline or intellectual acumen. Our culture floods us with the message that college is the only route for success, but how often do these same young hear the case AGAINST going to college? Either way, the last thing I would want is my hard-earned cash going to support Leftist indoctrination centers knows as liberal arts colleges and universities.

    As long as most major media outlets are nothing more than scribes and mouthpieces for the left, the indoctrination of students at all levels will continue unabated. At the present time the only place one learns about the outrageous behavior of these professors and teachers is in the alternative media, which is not enough to produce the reaction necessary in the general public to force change of policies by these so-called educational institutions.

      Once again, the excuse about “the media” is weak. The most popular news channel–by far–is conservative. The most popular radio programs are conservative. Viewership of the so-called “mainstream media” (a bogus term, now) has been way down for well over a decade. So is newspaper/magazine readership.The internet is neutral–it’s anything you want.

      Conservatives are NOT creative, NOT innovative, most of them have no sense of humor, and many of them little real regard for the value of culture beyond lip service (there are some exceptions of course). Therefore, outside these very popular but insular outlets, they have completely disengaged from culture. But they’d rather complain than do the hard work of creating culture. No excuses about “being shut out:” culture is an industry, too. If it “works,” if it rings true, it gets attention. It becomes influential. If it’s funny, it gets attention. If it gets attention, it makes money.

    As a libertarian professor who assigns essays authored by the esteemed Professor Williams,I frequently share my opinions on normative issues with my class. I am very careful to inform students that it is only my opinion on the normative issue being addressed and also make an effort to explain the other side. (Granted, as J.S. Mill points out in On Liberty, it is preferable to have someone who truly supports the other side to offer that other side.) I think it is particularly valuable to let students be exposed to a professor’s position on normative issues. I tell my students they need to understand the trade-offs. For example, I oppose “minimum wage” legislation because the only true minimum wage is zero, i.e. exactly the amount received by a person no employer will hire because no potential employer deems that person’s labor worth the legislated minimum. I require my students to explain who wins and who loses and punish gradewise those students who do not demonstrate they understand the trade-offs. I hope it shocks my students to hear I support legalization of drugs but use that as a platform to discuss trade-offs the typical 18-22 year old might not consider. For what is is worth, when I prefaced a remark at a presentation by a liberal speaker with “I am a conservative,” another professor prefaced her response with “first I want to thank you for coming out of the closet.” I know there are liberal professors who do NOT punish students who voice positions counter to the professors’. Unfortunately, based on students’ comments to me, I realize there are professors who do punish students with an opposing viewpoint. That some students intentionally choose to misrepresent their own position to score points with a professor is a sad commentary on hostility to viewpoint diversity on college campuses. Let the attacks begin.

      It is not only important for university–but crucial to a civil society worthy of the term–that opposing viewpoints not be frozen out, but allowed to see the light of day. I’ve said before, I would much rather have a card-carrying Marxist who encouraged opposing discussions teaching a class (where political views are appropriate, mind you) than a moderate who freezes out discussion.

    Too bad parents do not take more interest in over all politics and discuss it with their kids. Discuss the politics of socialism and every thing else. When they get to college they will know the arguments and all the knowledge and ideas and counter arguments and how to use them and add knowledge and can decide for them selves. Make politics a sport. My son told me he can’t watch a movie any more but what he “sees the politics in it. I have ruined his life-Joke”

    This kind of stupidity in America needs to STOP. Those mentioned obviously haven’t studied US History. I personally don’t follow any party because I feel that they are both too strong and are imbalanced; however history speaks for itself.

    First of all, during the Civil War Era, Republicans of the day worked to pass the Thirteenth Amendment, which outlawed slavery; the Fourteenth Amendment, which guaranteed equal protection under the laws; and the Fifteenth, which helped secure voting rights for African-Americans. All of these accomplishments extended and cemented the fundamental freedoms our nation continues to enjoy today.

    Secondly, The Republican Party also played a leading role in securing women the right to vote. In 1896, the Republican Party was the first major political party to support women’s suffrage. When the 19th Amendment finally was added to the Constitution, 26 of 36 state legislatures that had voted to ratify it were under Republican control. The first woman elected to Congress was a Republican, Jeanette Rankin from Montana in 1917. So it was by hardworking Republican hands that color and gender barriers were first demolished in America.

    Finally, WAKE UP AMERICA! Quit acting like sheep and allowing our country to be destroyed politically, educationally, and spiritually!

    Does This HS History Textbook Have a Pro-Islam Bias?

    A world history book used in an Advanced Placement class is under review by a Florida school board over allegations it favors Islam at the expense of Christianity and Judaism.

    The textbook is being used in an Advanced Placement class in Brevard County schools. The book is on a state-approved list and has been used in the school system for the past three years without any complaints.

    Workman said he received a copy of the book and he said it’s clear the authors “make a very obvious attempt not to insult Islam by reshaping history.”

    “If you don’t see it from the eyes of a parent, kids are going to take this book as gospel and believe that Christians and Jews were murderous barbarians and thank God the Muslims came along and the world is great,” he said.

    i am perplexed about the younger generations. i didnt go to a traditional college, so zero indoctrination. prehaps in general i was always a free thinker. but, i did grow up in a very left wing home. father was a socialist, mother not as extreme. some of what was told to me made sence, some did not. most young people rebel. wheres the rebellion today? most high school college kids are “questioning” authority. i see few do, maybe it was always that way. universities encouraged debate, even if they were liberal leaning. the sheep are usually sheep, maybe it was always that way regardless. the last thing i was looking for as a teen or 20 something was a father fgure, or a leader, or a group based upon an ideology. as for media, its a different world, more influencial now. was a communications major (advertising), studied copy writer, visuals etc. we were not PC, not in my school! we discussed all demographics, honestly & w/humor.

      You ask “Where is the rebellion?” and you sort of give the answer. The answer is that rebellion is Madison Ave. Rebellion is packaged, sold, and “mainstream.” It is now all about the appearance of rebellion; the whats and whys of rebellion don’t matter. Rebellion is a brand, much like the commodification of individualism: “Buy this–be different.”

    i went to a public school for 1 through 12. (hated it, boring). but, there were no discussions about politics, race, sex etc. there was a boundary. you just went in, took your beign required subjects, & that was that.

    I am a high school student who experiences political indoctrination on a daily basis. Every day one or more of my teachers tells the students about the “usurping Republicans” who are “trying to ruin our opportunities for the future”. My current history teacher is also grading us on our personal politics when we write current event reports and by forcing us to imitate communist revolutionaries by chanting communist slogans from the Russian Civil War. There was also a kid in my school who was given detention for wearing a 2nd-Amendment advocacy shirt in the school.

    This nation’s idea of “education” is becoming scarier every day, and something needs to be done to stop it because by weaker-minded peers are believing the junk that is fed to them.
