I very much enjoyed both True Detective and Top of the Lake (thought the whole storyline w/ Holly Hunter was unnecessary and she was very annoying. They could both use some anti-bitch cream, but Nussbaum does come off incredibly self-righteous, and hypocritical. True Detective was fantastic. I don't go for a lot of 'macho nonsense', myself, but this show was far more than that. It's her loss she couldn't get to that. And her attempts to sound well-read/educated w/ the quotes just comes of as a bit pretentious and unable to make her own clever metaphors.

Hope I'm not about to offend you (I say that sincerely) but I'm doing everything I can to make sure my daughters get an education outside the arts, any victim studies program, social science, or education (take a look at the SAT and ACT scores those departments require and you'll understand why there's a glut in those fields). There are few critics as entertaining as Klavan and far fewer making a decent living off their arts degrees. I've told my daughters (one in college and two not that far away) I'll pay for their college as long as it has some academic rigor and they can make a living off their degree.

"I won’t speculate on why Nussbaum can’t see Mrs. Hart’s inner life."

I will! It's because she's a shallow little scaredy-rabbit who makes all the right rabbity noises so the herd will wuv her and protect her from the mean ol scarey men. Take that you meany men! Nussrabbit is a tough lion bunny! Grrr! Can I have my hot cocoa now?

First thought is Klavan skewered Nussbaum's critique thoroughly.
Second thought is studying theatre & film is worthwhile in college or for self improvement, since there are people like art critiques like Klavan out there and the Nussbaum's of the world do yet have a lock on it. I enjoyed theatre class in college and especially enjoyed watching the plays put on by the local local Shakespeare Festival. If I had to sit in a classroom with a teacher like Nussbaum, I would have dropped the course. I did not solely appreciate the theatre class solely, because it had Shakespeare and he is a DWEM. I have seen bad Shakespeare productions, one on Broadway and one done in an operatic style.
