The way I see it is that these "Bonuses" have only triggered that all-too-human trait of avarice. While the VHA has saved my life (they paid $93K to a University Medical Center to preform an operation unavailable at any of the 152 VAMC's) and I have had several other very delicate surgeries supervised by Medical School professors in VHA hospitals, I've notice of late a lag-time in follow-up care that I didn't experience not too long ago. This year my primary care VAMC dropped off the 'Top 20' VAMC's list and there's a definite change in the atmosphere. Seems they can't keep a Director around for any length for some unknown reason. I will say that their electronic records system allows me to rapidly access anything in my records, VHA wide, that I wish hard-copy of. I know many worthy VHA health care professionals that are very discouraged. Morale is dropping. The VHA is in trouble - and so are veterans... Life Member - DAV

Thanks for this. Even at the better-run V.A. hospitals, waits are often long and service is wildly erratic. Months to get a consult is common, then months to get a followup. If you're in daily pain from, say, chronic ingrown toenails, well... waiting months to see the hospital podiatrist is not too convenient. It's impossible to maintain any continuity of health-care for an individual vet, even at the better sites.
At the worse V.A. hospitals, utter chaos rules. They are pretty much nightmares. I entered the E.R. at the Providence R.I. VA some years back -- the place was a literal M.A.S.H. unit, absolutely crammed with men, everywhere... in the beds, aisles, tables, sitting around in wheelchairs with heads bowed down, people moaning and calling out, just madness. Day in and day out. Yet there's plenty of money for luxury items for people, big houses, 500 dollar purses, and for endless mega-million dollar vacations for our President, his family, and their entourage.
Amongst other things, America suffers from very poor priorities. The problems at V.A. hospitals has been ongoing for decades, because a selfish nation instead follows its own vain priorities and desires.
