The Rise of American Totalitarianism

Obama-big-brotherLast Thursday, Mozilla, the company that’s home to the web browser Firefox, forced the resignation of CEO Brendan Eich. What, precisely, had Eich done wrong? Back in 2008, Eich had donated $1,000 to the Proposition 8 effort backing traditional marriage in California. Dating website OKCupid posted a ban on Firefox traffic, issuing a message to Firefox users instead: “Those who seek to deny love and instead enforce misery, shame, and frustration are our enemies, and we wish them nothing but failure.” That ban reportedly prompted the action at Mozilla.

Of course, it was the people pushing for Eich’s ouster who were enforcing “misery, shame, and frustration.” Eich had never brought his politics into the workplace. Mozilla had no history of treating homosexuals differently, and no single instance of Eich doing so could be documented. Nonetheless, he had violated the dictates of the Thought Police. And thus he was ousted.

It’s a disturbing story, to be sure. But it’s also just the tip of the iceberg: Unfortunately, the same folks administering the private Thought Police would love to extend their control into the realm of government. These are not libertarians arguing for the right to hire and fire as you see fit in the private market. These are power brokers seeking to use whatever means necessary to quash opposition.

That’s why gay couples have sued photographers, bakeries and florist shops, attempting to shut them down if they refuse to cater to same-sex weddings. That’s why the Obama administration has attempted to fine businesses that do not wish to pay for health coverage they deem sinful. The underlying idea: If the left dislikes what you do, the left can compel you not to do it. As Kevin Williamson of National Review writes, American society is quickly morphing into a system governed by T.H. White’s totalitarian principle: “Everything not forbidden is compulsory.”

Freedom is secondary to the yays and nays of the governing few in this vision. Freedom is merely that which the government allows — and the government should only allow you to do the bidding of the left. If you, recognizing that sometimes people will take action with which you disagree, believe that government should stay out of people’s business, you must therefore be an advocate for discrimination and brutality. To allow Eich to work is to discriminate against gays. To allow religious businesses to reject contraceptive mandates is to push women into back alley abortions. Forget the notion of disagreeing with your opinion, but defending your right to say it — in the view of the leftist totalitarians, such a notion is inherently unworkable.

When fascism comes, it will come not with jackboots but with promises of a better world. The jackboots come later, when we’ve all been shamed into silence — when we’ve been taught that to allow that with which we disagree is to agree with it, and when we’ve accepted that the best method of preventing such disagreement is government power. We’re on the verge. All it will take is the silence of good people — people on all sides of the political aisle — who fall prey to the ultimate temptation in a republic: the temptation to force their values on others utilizing the machinery of government. We’re already more than halfway there.

Wasn’t the Left supposed to be against blacklisting?

“That was just bullsh*t, Joel” (from Risky Business).

    • Larry Larkin

The left prefers out and out elimination of their opposition, via firing squads, extermination camps, neck tie parties, guillotine, etc, etc. But they’ll settle for blacklisting until the get the absolute power and One Party Government that they desire.

      • James Keir Baughman

Far better to fight now, while we have the “tools.”

        • kikorikid

“They” cannot take our “tools” without
the conflict they seem to want to avoid, at this time.
The fascism of the Left is growing fast and
it will put Leftist in front of people who have no use
for them. It’s not long now though.

We’re already more than halfway there(Shapiro is an optimist); but I’ll wager we’re only a hair or two away from a war. Because war is the only thing the Thought Police understand, and they prove it everyday.

    • RogerDane

Your moniker was a ‘very good’ book.
We are, as you suggest, on the verge. I just don’t see many Americans actually resisting. Most don’t know how and just as many are sissified, afraid of face to face conflict and abhor the idea of anything resembling physical confrontation/effort. God Save America.

      • MarilynA

America has been under attack by trained psychologists who are using the methods spouse abusers use to subjugate and control their victims. First you destroy the self confidence by blaming them for everything that goes wrong. convince them they can’t do anything right. Everything they do results in something bad happening, They are responsible for everything bad that happens, Whatever bad that happens to them they have it coming because if they hadn’t done this or that, this bad thing would not have happened. And if they would just try harder, understand others positions more, gave more, etc, etc, etc, things would be better and people would love them. This crap has been taught to our children in our public schools for the past 50 years. How many times have we been told that jihadist terrorists are justified in killing innocents because US actions have left them no other recourse? How many times has the USA been blamed for horrendous actions by the world’s bullies? It’s time someone took a stand and started telling the truth. America was once the greatest place on earth. But it is fast becoming a carbon copy of the other despot ruled crap holes around the world. If the white guilt that permeates the curriculums in our public schools were taught about any other race it would be called child abuse. Yet we tolerate it in the name of achieving social justice. While American citizens cower like frightened women, the world’s bullies are taking us to the cleaners and wiping their feet on us.

        • Robert Johnson

Very powerful observation! America has been under PsyWar attack for decades. Google “Yuri Bezmenov” and watch this KGB defectors 1983 interview where the warns Americans of the “Ideological subversion” underway, to destroy America from within, by destroying our cultural institutions and faith in ourselves.

Oh there will be massive casualties , no doubt about it, when western man begins his warfare against this abomination that we have all become, it will epic. God only helps those who help themselves.

On top of that, we still have the mass of uninformed Americans who live their lives oblivious to what is happening around them. I recently mentioned to one of my co-workers that I was a “tea partier” and she said, “What’s that?” God help us.

War would be a blessing. It would mean that someone is actually fighting back. We need to stop rolling over and dying for these monsters and actually take our constitutional freedoms back, they sure aren’t going to give them to us.

The Führer thanks DEMOCRATS from the grave:

    Hitler was a Leftist
    Hitler’s Anti-Tobacco Campaign

One particularly vile individual, Karl Astel — upstanding president of Jena University, poisonous anti-Semite, euthanasia fanatic, SS officer, war criminal and tobacco-free Germany enthusiast — liked to walk up to smokers and tear cigarettes from their unsuspecting mouths. (He committed suicide when the war ended, more through disappointment than fear of hanging.) It comes as little surprise to discover that the phrase “passive smoking” (Passivrauchen) was coined not by contemporary American admen, but by Fritz Lickint, the author of the magisterial 1100-page Tabak und Organismus (“Tobacco and the Organism”), which was produced in collaboration with the German AntiTobacco League.

Profit from Smuggling Cigarettes in the United States

    in Business Security

According to figures released by an official with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, a cigarette smuggler can make up to $500,000 from from smuggling cigarettes between states on the East Coast.

The smuggler legitimately buys 200 cases of cigarettes in southern states such as North Carolina or South Carolina. Then, the smuggler would then drive up the coast to New York City, where the tax on tobacco is $4.35.

56.9 percent of the cigarettes smoked in NYC in 2012 were smuggled though the black market.

  • wildjew

The American people twice elected a racist-demagogue president. I worry about the future of this country.

    • RogerDane

Ahh, you ‘just’ worry? We are way past the point of worry. Try hand wringing and sighing… basically Americans will not fight. That is what worries me.

      • wildjew

If Americans will not fight, I would advise you to get (or keep) your passport up to date. I need to update mine.

BTW, I tried fighting during the administration of George W. Bush (I voted for him in 2000; got thrown out of our local party for criticizing his misguided policies on jihad) but conservatives and Republicans circled the wagons around him – Limbaugh, Hannity, WND, Frontpagmag, News Max, Ann Coulter, Joseph Farah, etc.) and his many falsehoods about Israel being an illegitimate occupier of Muslim lands and about Islam. With seven plus years of these terrible lies post 9/11 we should have seen Obama coming; at least those of us who believe in divine justice / judgement should have seen it.

        • Larry Adams

Some of us did see it coming, we warned people we new. But were shouted down by the folks that thought the Obama was going to give them free health care! Now they can’t stand the man, who knew? We did! I gave up voting after I saw a Presedent selected instead of being elected like we used to do when America was a democracy. I’m really afraid for my country and our people. Please wake up people and turn this once great nation around before its to late.

          • American1969

I hear you! Even before Obama got elected, I was warning people about him. I was called racist, paranoid, hater, stupid, etc.
Now here it is, six years later, and idiots who voted for him are regretting it and complaining. Can’t help but gloat, but part of me also wants to slap these people. What did they expect?
The rest are people who want to bury their heads in the sand and pretend that nothing is happening. They don’t care. They’re too busy playing with their phones or watching American Idol to pay attention. It’s frustrating as you well know!
I agree: The American people have GOT to wake up and pay attention! Sure, paying attention to what’s happening in the country isn’t as sexy as Dancing With the Stars, but it’s important! Our country and our way of life is at stake!

          • Larry Adams

You are’nt racist, just because you did not see Obama as America’s great black hope. I know a lot of people from Chicago, IL , most never even heard of the man. The ones that did know about him said that he never did much for Illinois during his reign there, except talk about gun control. By the way I’ve always been amazed when I hear people call him an African American. The man does not come from the same experience that my people have endured here in this country. Please don’t let them fool you we are suffering more under his administration then we did under George W Bush (who I kinda liked ). By the way I love my country and would not want to live anywhere where else! This was the best place in the world to live and I hope will be again if the American people wake up in time!

        • Debbie G

“..keep your passport up to date.”
          Where will you go, wj?

          • wildjew

I plan (I hope) to immigrate to Israel, God-willing.

          • Debbie G

I fear the downfall of America will greatly affect Israel, no? Even so, I wish you well on your journey….

          • wildjew

That is why I have advocated Israel wean herself from dependency on the U.S. as much as is humanly possible. If Israel continues this unhealthy dependency, yes you are right it will greatly affect Israel negatively.

I think a lot of Americans are ready to fight, but you can’t expect them to actually march on Washington or some of the socialist state capitals without moral, intellectual, and political leadership. This they do not have at the present time with Republican “leaders” like Reince Priebus, John Boehner, Paul Ryan, and Mitch McConnell. With new, militant Conservative leadership of a party (either Republican or a new Conservative Party), I think a lot of us would fight.

    • James Keir Baughman

And so do I, my friend!

    • victoryman

We have two underlying problems today…….the “It can’t happen here” crowd and the virus known as apathy infecting the electorate.

  • Ross

Excellent article, and it applies to most if not all Western countries, not only to America. Having said that, the USA seems to churn out news cases of ‘gay’ with-hunting every week!

These gaystapo creeps unfortunately get away with it because
A not enough normal people will mobilise to fight back,
B because of course too many anti-American judges have been appointed to positions whiich they abuse to damage their country.(and it’s not only Democrat-appointees – I believe the man who sabotaged California’s democratic vote on marriage was named to the post by a Republican President)

The answer? Only a concerted drive by an angry people. But are enough people angry enough yet?

    • James Keir Baughman

Well, you and I are. Lets go Truth Revolt!

    • kasandra

I think you nailed it. While the left generally has a totalitarian temptation, I find myself in strange agreement with Bill Maher and Andrew Sullivan on this one. This was, as you state, the working of the “gaystopo.” And they don’t just act against the right. Look what happened to Alec Baldwin for calling a photostalker a “faggot.” I’ve met Mr. Baldwin and found him a great guy who I’d be happy to have a drink with although we probably wouldn’t agree even on what day it was. But he’s a lefty and he wasn’t spared.

  • kevinstroup

What happens when Gaystapo meets Islamonazi?

    • Headed4TheHills

      Mutual destruction?

      • Race_Dissident

        One can hope.

If only it were so. But if we Conservatives are finally defeated, gays are going to find out they’re dispensable to the Left, who will not risk a confrontation with their Islamist allies just for their sake. Gays are useful to the Left at the moment, but with their power secure, under the bus the gays will go. I predict not even that would save them from the Islamists, however, who want power as much as the secular Left (really, they’re part of the Left) but are even more ruthless about using violence to achieve it.

        • Drakken

Lets the gays out live their usefulness, when this all comes finally to its inevitable conclusion, let the islamist kill them by the millions as far as I am concerned, for at the end of the day, as long as us westerners are still standing, I could care less how many muslims, leftists and gays are in their high moral ground.

    • victoryman

  • Gamal

Common Core is one way the left is imposing totalitarianism.

    • Wolfthatknowsall

Gamal, if you’re American, then please don’t support Christ Christie or Jeb Bush. They are both wobbly on Common Core …

      • Gamal

There are some Republicans who support Common Core but most of them who did and now realize what it is have turned against it and it is the leftist government of Obama that is trying to impose it. Historically conservatives have supported standards and liberals have opposed them, conservative initially saw the argument about Common Core as one that defended upholding standards in American schools. It is really a sneaky way the left is trying to take over schools and indoctrinate American children (see for example

Incidentally I don’t support Chris Christie. He declares himself to be a Republican but many of his policies are leftist.
Common Core is designed to indoctrinate American children with radical leftist beliefs.

They also favor destroying the country (and their own party!) with an amnesty for illegal aliens.

  • Sharps Rifle

    Entirely accurate.

  • Gamal

What is the fallacy in “Those who seek to deny love and instead enforce misery, shame, and frustration”? No one who is opposed to gay marriage is trying to deny love. On he contrary they are trying to protect marriage. They are trying to protect the sanctity and purity of marriage. Love and sexual intercourse are not the same thing. People who oppose gay marriage are not opposed to men or women loving other men or women they are opposed to men having sex with men and women having sex with women.

  • James Keir Baughman

Perfectly described. Now, Truth Revolt, lets get to work on it.

  • macdaddy

Liberals yell louder. That is how they argue. Our society and culture is being transformed because a minority yells louder than the majority and pushes, forces, intimidates their views on the rest of us. I am all for slow, modest, thoughtful progression where it makes sense, but anything any group wants is now thrust down our collective throats because they yell loud and the rest of us cower until the yelling group’s point becomes dogma and people start to accept or fear castigation. The non-Lefty Liberals and Conservatives, even though it is not in their nature, unfortunately need to metaphorically start yelling even louder. Perhaps Mr. Eich should have stood his ground and thoughtfully explained why he was being mistreated. He hated nobody. He just believed that the notion and definition of “marriage”, that divine construct the human race has held sacred for millennia, should remain unaltered.

  • Wolfthatknowsall

Excellent essay, Ben. I agree with you 100%, and be assured that this is one person who will NOT be silent.

  • Geoffrey_Britain

Every socialistic system must eventually devolve into “Everything not forbidden is compulsory.”
As the system starts to run out of “other people’s money”, incrementally, ALL private property, assets and income is seized. New York State now has “50% Taxes When Alive, 50% Taxes When You Die” and certain categories are taxed at a 164% rate! To repress protest and resistance, ALL thought, speech and behavior is gradually categorized as either forbidden or mandatory.

Totalitarianism is the natural end state for all socialistic systems, for to survive they must seize total control and, total control can only be achieved through coercion and repression.

    • Wolfthatknowsall

That’s why there’s so much attention paid to gun control and, especially, to gun confiscation. Owning guns would result in resistance, and it must be forbidden.

Concerning New York, there’s all these ads encouraging businesses to relocate to the state. Is there any businessman stupid enough to do this?

      • Geoffrey_Britain

“Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army [brownshirts], an enslaved press [ideologically pure], and a disarmed populace [mandatory gun registration]… Crisis is the rallying cry of the tyrant.” James Madison, father of the American Constitution

        • NAHALKIDES

Excellent quote from Madison which I hadn’t read before.

        • Infovoyeur

Noooo, oppressors can also achieve a political voting majority and then legalize an oppressive authoritative totalitarian fascist (etc.) state……But heck, this probably hasn’t happened in history, so therefore probably won’t.

          • Freedom Call

That’s more or less hitler actually though the margin was just enough to destroy all liberties.

I’m afraid there probably are. Businessmen tend to be philosophical pragmatists, which means they’ll make a deal with the Left today even if it means the Gulag for them tomorrow. NY is offering no taxes for a limited period to induce businesses to move there, hoping that no one will ask how high the rates will be after the period expires, or point out how unfair that is to businesses already located in the state who will have their tax burden increased to cover this “teaser” for the new guys.

        • Drakken

My friend, let me remind you of a very simple truth, business is always in the business of business. When any person, Govt, or entity gets in the way of said business, business will always take care of business.

          • lyndaaquarius

but,did Mozilla Firefox take care of business? Business got trumped by Leftism in that case. They’re losing, not gaining business.

          • Drakken

          • Drakken

I am a Mozilla Firefox user in England and really like the browser. However, I am sickened by what Mozilla have done and am quite prepared to switch browsers. Wouldn’t it be great if many millions of people voted on Mozilla’s behaviour by dropping their product?

I’ve never thought about whether my browser was ‘conservative’ or not much like the baked beans I buy but this has made me think about it!

Yet, what is the alternative? I read on FPM what Daniel Greenfield wrote
about how reliant on Google Mozilla is (which might explain why Mozilla
did what they did) and also strongly suspect Microsoft aren’t any
better I am not sure where to go. Any ideas?

    • CDM

I have already deleted Firefox off of my computer as my response for this debacle. There are always alternatives. As a Mac user, Safari comes with every Mac but some stuff doesn’t work well on it. I downloaded Google Chrome and it seems to work well although Google seems to want me to tell it everything. Now I don’t particularly like Google much either, given their business practices, but they haven’t gone way out of their way to offend me or what I believe.

I don’t know of any that are 100% effective, but here are some simple ideas:
      1. Pale Moon – based on Firefox’s open-source code
      2. Microsoft IE – the only problem with it is that you’re supporting Bill (Common Core) Gates. But this is still the #1 browser.
      3. Safari (for Mac) – a pretty good browser
      4. Chrome – the problem, as you observed, is that it’s Google, which is in need of its own comeuppance
      5. Wyzo – probably too obscure. I wouldn’t bet on it being around that much longer.

      • Spirit of Jabotinsky

Thank you so much. I will check out Pale Moon certainly.

      • Spirit of Jabotinsky

Just downloaded Pale Moon and it looks just like Firefox (possibly better) but without the Mozilla. Fantastic – thank you!

In the name of “freedom and equality”, the new fascists revel in taking away the freedom of others. So they organize smear campaigns to slander, scapegoat, shame and destroy anyone who disagrees with them. I would advise these people to enjoy their “utopian high” and “freedom fantasy” while they can. Because little do they realize that a truly Progressive-Left government is a totalitarian government. And a government with total power over the lives of its citizens has absolutely no use for the revolutionary small-fry, who will be among the first of its victims. The lucky ones will be imprisoned, starved and over-worked; maybe they’ll survive. Others– those demonized, persecuted, banished and even executed– will not be so lucky.

It is gratifying to see more and more people come to the conclusion that we have an Administration that acts like other despotic rulers of history. The question is are we going to allow this to continue or are we going to put an end to the destruction of our Republic? We must be smart about this, no stupid action. We just need to vet all candidates, pick the right ones, take extra effort to elect them and make sure they stay true to the cause and take the proper action in ridding this administration of all those ruining our Republic. Then in 2016 we need to take extra caution in selecting the right candidate for president of the United States of America.

“If you, recognizing that sometimes people will take action with which you disagree, believe that government should stay out of people’s business, you must therefore be an advocate for discrimination and brutality.”

Read carefully how the Left’s linguistic tyranny has crept into our own word usage. “Discrimination” used to have a positive connotation and was considered a sign of mature, intelligent thinking. Now it has been twisted into the worst sin one can commit. Dscrimination is something no one wants to be accused of, but it is also something the Left doesn’t want people to do intellectually. Having the capacity for discrimination, ie. judgement, moral discernment, or good taste, is a threat to the Left’s totalitarian agenda, so the word was made synonymous with bigotry. A big part of political correctness is linguistic tyranny, where meaning itself is under assault.
First the meaning of “gay” was warped. Then the meaning of marriage was attacked by adding “gay.” The Left wants to control not only what we think but how. They want to rewrite all meaning.
